Sichuan University is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education. It is a high-level research-oriented comprehensive university that the country has focused on building in western China. It is a national "double first-class" university (Class A). Sichuan University is located in Chengdu, a famous historical and cultural city in China, the "Land of Abundance". It has three campuses, Wangjiang, Huaxi and Jiang'an, covering an area of ​​7,050 mu and a building area of ​​2.8064 million square meters. The school is cooperating with Meishan City to build the Meishan Campus of Sichuan University. The campus environment is elegant, with lush flowers and trees, green grass and pleasant scenery. Sichuan University was formed by the merger of three national key universities, namely the former Sichuan University, the former Chengdu University of Science and Technology, and the former West China University of Medical Sciences. The former Sichuan University originated from the Sichuan Chinese and Western School founded by Sichuan Governor Lu Chuanlin in 1896 under the special order of Emperor Guangxu. It is the earliest modern university in the southwest region; the former Chengdu University of Science and Technology is the first batch of multi-disciplinary engineering colleges established during the adjustment of colleges and departments in New China; the former West China University of Medical Sciences originated from the West China Union University founded by the Western Christian Church in Chengdu in 1910. It is the earliest Western-style university in the southwest region and one of the earliest universities in China to train graduate students. In 1994, the former Sichuan University and the former Chengdu University of Science and Technology merged into Sichuan Union University, which was renamed Sichuan University in 1998. Jiang Zemin, Li Peng and other party and state leaders wrote inscriptions for the merger of the two schools and placed great hopes on them. In 2000, Sichuan University merged with the former West China University of Medical Sciences to form the new Sichuan University. Comrade Li Lanqing said during his inspection of the new Sichuan University: "Sichuan University is the earliest university to be reformed in our country. It has made a historic contribution to the reform of our country's universities and can be said to be a pioneer in the reform of the university system." During the earthquake relief of the "5.12" Wenchuan earthquake in 2008, Wen Jiabao and other party and state leaders visited Sichuan University to express their condolences. In 2016, Premier Li Keqiang visited the university and encouraged Sichuan University to take the lead in the national "double innovation" and produce more world-class disciplines.

Sichuan University inherits the teachings of Wen Weng and gathers talents. Over the past 100 years, the university has successively gathered masters such as historian Gu Jiegang, writer Li Jieren, aesthetician Zhu Guangqian, physicist Wu Dayou, botanist Fang Wenpei, hygienist Chen Zhiqian, and mathematician Ke Zhao. Historically, Wu Yuzhang and Zhang Lan were in charge of school affairs. Zhu De, the founding father of the Republic, Yang Shangkun, the president of the Republic, Guo Moruo, the literary giant, Ba Jin, the people's writer, and Jiang Zhuyun (Jiang Jie), a generation of heroes, studied at Sichuan University. Among the academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 70 are Sichuan University alumni.

Sichuan University has a full range of disciplines, covering 12 categories including literature, science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, law, history, philosophy, agriculture, education, and art. It has 36 discipline-based colleges (departments) and colleges such as the Overseas Education College. West China Hospital was approved as the first batch of national medical centers (counseling category), West China Stomatological Hospital was approved as the national stomatological center, West China Second Hospital was approved as the national children's regional medical center, West China Xiamen Hospital was approved as the national regional medical center, and West China Telemedicine Network became China's largest telemedicine education and hierarchical collaborative medical system, with a total of 1,137 network hospitals.

Sichuan University currently has 8.29 million paper documents, 321 Chinese and foreign document databases, more than 85,000 cultural relics, more than 940,000 animal and plant specimens, and about 360,000 volumes of various archives (including more than 9,000 volumes of precious historical archives).
