Southwest Medical University is a provincial general higher education institution in Sichuan Province. It is located in Luzhou, a national historical and cultural city, a national health city, and a national civilized city in the Sichuan, Chongqing, Yunnan, and Guizhou regions. The predecessor of the school, Southwest Sichuan Medical School, was founded in 1951. It was upgraded to Luzhou Medical College in 1959, upgraded to an undergraduate college in 1978 and renamed Luzhou Medical College. It obtained the right to confer bachelor's degrees in 1982, became a master's degree conferring institution in 1993, began to jointly train doctoral students in 2001, and started to provide undergraduate education for overseas students in 2004. In 2010, it was approved to establish a postdoctoral research workstation. In 2015, it was renamed Southwest Medical University and approved as a doctoral degree conferring institution in 2021.

In the long-term practice of running schools, the school has formed the fine tradition of "unity and struggle, hard work and entrepreneurship", adhering to the school motto of "virtue and industry, benevolence and saving the world" and the spirit of "self-improvement, adherence to the school philosophy of "virtue and industry, tolerance and openness", and formed the school characteristics of "virtue and industry, equal emphasis on Chinese and Western medicine". The school currently has two campuses in Zhongshan and Chengbei, covering an area of ​​2011 acres; it has 20 colleges (departments) and more than 19,000 undergraduates, postgraduates, and international students. Since its establishment, the school has trained more than 170,000 specialized talents at all levels and types, becoming an important base for the cultivation of medical and health talents and scientific and technological innovation in Sichuan, and a regional prevention, medical, scientific research and health industry service center combining Sichuan, Chongqing, Yunnan and Guizhou.

The school (including directly affiliated hospitals) has more than 8,000 medical and teaching staff; 1,288 full-time teachers, including 581 senior professionals and 603 PhD holders; 52 doctoral supervisors and 904 master supervisors; more than 100 high-level talents of various types, including 58 national high-level talents.

The school has a relatively complete range of disciplines and outstanding disciplinary characteristics. Clinical medicine and pharmacy are first-class disciplines in Sichuan Province. Clinical medicine, pharmacology and toxicology are among the top 1% of ESI global rankings, among which clinical medicine ranks 41.49% among the top 1% of ESI global rankings. There is currently 1 doctoral professional degree authorization point, 8 first-level master's degree authorization points, and 10 master's professional degree authorization points, covering disciplines such as medicine, management, law, and education. There are 33 general undergraduate majors, covering 7 disciplines; there are 12 national and provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 3 national specialty majors, 3 provincial specialty majors, and 5 provincial application-oriented demonstration majors. We vigorously promote the combination of "medical engineering, medical science, and medical literature" and build a medical professional education system covering "the whole life cycle and the whole health process".

The school is a qualified unit for recommending outstanding undergraduate graduates to study for a master's degree without examination, and has undertaken 5 national medical education reform projects. In 2021, we participated in the 10th China College Students Medical Technology Skills Competition, and the four tracks of clinical medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, nursing, and preventive medicine all advanced to the national finals and won awards. From 2011 to 2018, we participated in the National College Students Clinical Skills Competition for Higher Medical Colleges and won 1 special prize in the Southwest and Northwest region, 6 first prizes, 3 second prizes in the national finals, and 4 third prizes; among the more than 140 participating medical colleges in the country, our school is one of the 9 schools that have entered the national finals for 6 consecutive sessions. The employment rate of graduates has remained above 90% for many years. The passing rate of the National Medical Practitioner Qualification Examination is higher than the national average, and in recent years it has ranked in the top 20% of reference institutions. In the past four sessions, it has won 19 provincial teaching achievement awards, including 6 first prizes.

The school has successively built 37 scientific research platforms at the provincial and ministerial levels, such as the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education and the Key Laboratory of Sichuan Province, and has been approved for 39 provincial and municipal scientific research teams. It is the leading unit of the "Sichuan 2011 Collaborative Innovation Center for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and Treatment". From 2017 to 2021, the school was approved for 4,772 scientific research projects at all levels and types, including 397 scientific research projects at the provincial and ministerial level and above; 45 scientific and technological achievement awards at the provincial and ministerial level or above, including 1 second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award.

The school has established foreign cooperation and exchange relations with 25 countries and regions, and has successfully held international academic conferences many times, and established the China-Portuguese-speaking countries and regions International Cooperation Base for Traditional Chinese Medicine. More than 500 postdoctoral, graduate and undergraduate students have been trained for countries along the "Belt and Road" such as Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh.

The school currently has 5 directly affiliated hospitals, which have demonstrated strong emergency rescue capabilities and high treatment success rates in public emergencies and emergency rescue. As a provincial medical center in the four southwestern provinces (cities), it protects the health of the people in the Sichuan, Chongqing, Yunnan and Guizhou regions, and has made important contributions to the training of national and regional medical and health talents and medical services.
