Xi'an University of Science and Technology has a long history and profound cultural heritage. The school's history can be traced back to the Mining and Metallurgy Department of the Beiyang University School of Engineering established in 1895. In 1938, it moved to the Mining and Metallurgy Department of Northwest Polytechnic Institute, merged into Xi'an Jiaotong University in 1957, and separated from Xi'an Jiaotong University in 1958 to establish an independent Xi'an Mining College, which was one of the only two five-year undergraduate colleges under the former Ministry of Coal Industry at that time. In 1998, the school implemented "central and local co-construction, mainly local management" and was transferred to Shaanxi Province. In 1999, it was renamed Xi'an Institute of Science and Technology, and in 2003, it was renamed Xi'an University of Science and Technology.

The school is a university jointly built by the Ministry of Emergency Management and the Shaanxi Provincial People's Government, a university implementing the Ministry of Education's Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program, a university implementing the National High-level University Public Postgraduate Program, a university implementing the National Characteristic Key Discipline Project, a university implementing the National Central and Western University Basic Capacity Construction Project, a university building a high-level university in Shaanxi Province, and a university building a "first-class university, first-class discipline" in Shaanxi Province. In 2004, the school received an excellent grade in the undergraduate teaching work level assessment of the Ministry of Education. In 2017, in the fourth round of national discipline level assessment, the school's safety science and engineering discipline entered Class A, becoming the only Class A engineering discipline in Shaanxi provincial universities; in August 2018, the school was selected as a "domestic first-class university construction university" in Shaanxi Province, and the safety science and engineering discipline was selected as a "domestic first-class university construction university" construction discipline. In July 2020, the school's engineering discipline entered the top 1% of the ESI global ranking. The school has successively won the titles of "Civilized Campus", "Safe Campus" in the Shaanxi Provincial Education System, and "Gardenized Unit" in Xi'an.

The university covers an area of ​​920,000 square meters, with two campuses in Yanta and Lintong, a graduate school and 20 colleges (departments). It has national key disciplines in safety technology and engineering, 8 provincial advantageous and characteristic (key) disciplines, covering 47 secondary disciplines. It has 30 scientific research platforms at or above the provincial and ministerial level, including the National Key Laboratory of Energy Coal Quality and Clean Conversion, the National Key Laboratory of Coal Industry Mining Engineering (provincial and ministerial level), and the Engineering Research Center for Western Coal Mine Safety of the Ministry of Education, and 1 innovation team of the Ministry of Education. There are 18 national first-class undergraduate professional construction sites, 8 provincial first-class undergraduate professional construction sites, 8 national characteristic majors, 11 provincial characteristic majors, 1 national quality course, 1 national quality resource sharing course, 67 provincial quality resource sharing courses (quality courses), 2 national first-class undergraduate courses, 35 provincial first-class undergraduate courses, 2 provincial bilingual teaching demonstration courses, 1 national teaching team, 28 provincial teaching teams, 1 national talent training model innovation experimental zone, 15 provincial talent training model innovation experimental zones, 2 national experimental teaching demonstration centers (virtual simulation experimental teaching centers), 18 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers (virtual simulation experimental teaching centers). The school currently has 6 postdoctoral research stations, 7 first-level doctoral programs, 26 first-level master programs, 6 engineering master professional degree categories, and master of business administration, accounting, applied statistics, translation, engineering management, and Chinese international education professional degree authorization points, 60 undergraduate majors, forming a school-running pattern with geology, mining, safety and related disciplines as the characteristics, engineering as the main body, and coordinated development of engineering, science, literature, management, law, economics, and art. There are 25,000 full-time students.

The school has nearly 2,300 faculty and staff, more than 1,400 full-time teachers, more than 700 professors and associate professors, and more than 1,300 teachers with doctoral and master's degrees. Among them, 32 people have won the title of "experts and scholars" at the national level, and 105 people have won the title of "experts and scholars" at the provincial level. 47 people enjoy special government subsidies from the State Council. The school also has a high-level part-time teaching team composed of more than 300 experts and professors, including 18 dual-appointed academicians.

Since the 12th Five-Year Plan, the university has undertaken more than 9,300 scientific research projects, including 573 national projects such as major national science and technology projects, "973", "863", national science and technology support plans, national key research and development plans, National Natural Science Foundation and National Social Science Foundation. The total contract amount of scientific research funds has exceeded 2 billion yuan, and it has won 6 national science and technology progress awards, 364 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards, and more than 4,500 authorized patents.

The school has cooperated with nearly 60 universities in more than 20 countries and regions. It is also one of the four founding institutions of the "1+2+1 Sino-US Talent Training Program" project, and has jointly carried out 2 Sino-foreign cooperative education projects with the University of Tasmania and Macquarie University in Australia. It has carried out undergraduate, master and doctoral exchange student programs with universities in Canada, Russia, Malaysia and other countries, as well as 42 short-term exchange programs such as Cambridge University. It has enrolled 340 undergraduate, master and doctoral degree students and short-term international students from 32 countries.
