North China Institute of Science and Technology is a university directly under the Ministry of Emergency Management. Its predecessor was the Cadre School of the Central Fuel Industry Ministry established in 1950; in 1955, it was transferred to the Ministry of Coal Industry and renamed the Cadre School of the Ministry of Coal Industry; in 1982, it was upgraded to Beijing Coal Management Cadre College; in 1984, the Beijing Coal Management Cadre College branch was built in Yanjiao; in 1993, it was converted into a general college and renamed North China Mining College; in 2002, it was upgraded to a general undergraduate college and renamed North China Institute of Science and Technology; in 2011, it obtained the qualification to train postgraduates with a professional degree in engineering (safety engineering).

The school takes serving and supporting the emergency management of a great country as its first orientation, adheres to emergency management, public safety, and serves the economy and society, and strives to build a talent training highland, scientific and technological innovation highland, and education and training highland that serve the needs of emergency management. It has gradually formed a multi-level and relatively complete talent training system with undergraduate education as the main focus, graduate education, international student education, adult education and short-term training.

The school is located in the Yanjiao National High-tech Development Zone in Hebei Province, adjacent to the Beijing Urban Sub-Center. The school covers an area of ​​800 acres and a building area of ​​450,000 square meters. The school currently has 1 national engineering practice education center, 5 key laboratories of ministries and commissions, 5 provincial key laboratories, experimental teaching demonstration centers, and educational innovation highlands. The library has a collection of 1.48 million paper books, 1.46 million electronic books, and 39 Chinese and foreign databases of various types. Modern educational technology is widely used in teaching, scientific research and training. The school is a city node unit of the China Education and Research Network.

The school has 14 secondary colleges, 2 departments, and about 17,000 full-time students. There are 56 undergraduate majors, covering eight disciplines including engineering, science, literature, law, economics, management, education, and art. There are currently 3 national specialty majors, 1 boutique course, 3 pilot majors of the Ministry of Education's "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program", and 7 provincial key disciplines, key development disciplines, and brand specialty majors. In 2019, the safety engineering major was selected as a national first-class undergraduate major construction site.

The school has a rigorous faculty. The school currently has more than 1,000 full-time teachers, of which professors and associate professors account for nearly 50%, and teachers with doctoral and master's degrees account for nearly 90%. The school has flexibly introduced 7 academicians, 5 people who enjoy special government subsidies, 3 national candidates for the New Century "Hundreds of Millions" Talent Project, 6 people in the Ministry of Education's "New Century Excellent Talent Support Program", 8 national safety production emergency experts, and 4 provincial teaching masters, outstanding educators, and outstanding teachers. The "Innovation Team of Mine Water Disaster Mechanism and Early Warning Guarantee System" led by Professor Yin Shangxian received rolling support from the "Innovation Team Development Plan" of the Ministry of Education, and the mining engineering team led by Professor Chen Xuexue was selected as the "National Huang Danian-style Teacher Team of Colleges and Universities".

The school has strong scientific research strength. In the past five years, the school has added more than 800 scientific research projects, including 3 national key research and development plans, 2 national social science fund projects (including 1 key project), and 27 national natural science funds, with a total research funding of 383 million yuan; 62 scientific and technological achievement awards at the provincial and ministerial levels (including national industry associations), among which "Key Technology for Prediction and Prevention of Water Inrush Disasters in Deep Coal Mining" won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, and "Research on Pushing, Anchoring and Multiple-Directional Support System of Large-section Coal Lanes in Extra-thick Coal Seams" won the first prize of the Hebei Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award; teachers published 277 academic papers indexed by EI, SCI, and CSSCI; obtained 135 invention patents, and published more than 40 monographs.

The school closely focuses on the construction of the "three major highlands" and continuously improves its internationalization level. It has jointly trained professional talents with more than 50 universities (institutions) in more than 20 countries such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Italy, and Latvia through various forms. The school employs more than 40 foreign teachers and foreign experts of various types throughout the year, and has trained nearly 1,000 international students in total. The China-Latvia "Belt and Road" Academic Exchange Center is located in the school to carry out teacher-student exchanges and scientific research cooperation based on the center.

The school has long been responsible for the cadre training business entrusted by the competent department in production safety, disaster prevention, mitigation and relief, emergency management, etc. Relying on the training advantage, the school has built a comprehensive training base for national production safety supervision, inspection and law enforcement in North China (investment of 100 million yuan), and is cooperating with Beijing Coal Group to build a national production safety accident prevention and emergency response technology experimental training and popular science base (investment of 300 million yuan); 170 online and offline training courses for safety and emergency have been completed, and 57 courses are under construction (investment of 20 million yuan). Relying on the accident prevention and control, safety supervision and inspection, emergency response and other teaching case libraries formed by training, as well as "dual-teacher" teachers, practice bases and other school resources, effectively support the practical, application-oriented safety and emergency undergraduate and graduate training.

With the fundamental task of cultivating socialist builders and successors with all-round development of morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics and labor, the school focuses on the cultivation of students' comprehensive quality and innovation and entrepreneurship ability. The school's students have won many honors in various competitions organized by the state and provincial and ministerial levels over the years, especially in the National College Student Robot Competition, the National College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the National College Student Chemical Engineering Design Competition, the National College Student Mathematical Modeling Competition and other competitions. The school attaches great importance to the ideological and moral education of students, and strives to create a campus cultural atmosphere that cultivates students' patriotism, collectivism and socialist spirit. It has won honorary titles such as "Civilized Unit" and "Civilized Campus" many times.
