Dalian University of Technology is the first new regular university founded by the Communist Party of China on the eve of the founding of New China, for the construction of the industrial system of New China.

Dalian University of Technology is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education, a key construction university of the national "211 Project" and "985 Project", and a world-class university A-level construction university. The school aims to cultivate elite talents, promote scientific and technological progress, inherit excellent culture, and lead social trends. Dalian University of Technology was founded in April 1949 as Dalian University Institute of Technology. In July 1950, Dalian University was abolished and the Institute of Technology became independent as Dalian Institute of Technology. In October 1960, it was designated as a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education. In April 1986, the Graduate School was established. In March 1988, it was renamed Dalian University of Technology. In 1996, the "211 Project" was launched, and the Ministry of Education, Liaoning Province, and Dalian City jointly built Dalian University of Technology. In 2001, the "985 Project" was launched, and the Ministry of Education, Liaoning Province, and Dalian City jointly built Dalian University of Technology. In 2003, it was designated as a central-level cadre school by the central government. In December 2012, the Ministry of Education officially approved Dalian University of Technology to build the Panjin Campus in accordance with the guiding ideology of "comprehensive planning, staggered development, adherence to standards, and innovative models", and to run schools with the same standards, grades, and levels as the main campus. In September 2017, with the approval of the State Council, it was selected into the list of world-class universities of Class A; in February 2022, it was selected into the list of universities in the second round of the national "Double First-Class" construction.

The school currently has 4,473 faculty members, including 2,945 full-time teachers. The school has 15 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1 academician of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering, 34 academicians of the two academies among part-time teachers, 1,004 full-time teachers with senior titles, and 1,225 with associate senior titles. There are 1,084 doctoral supervisors and 2,439 master supervisors.

The school currently has a total of 46,450 students, including 25,603 undergraduates (25,444 ordinary undergraduates and 159 second bachelor's degrees). The total number of graduate students is 20,847, including 4,841 doctoral students (4,421 full-time academic doctoral students, 312 full-time professional doctoral students, and 108 part-time professional doctoral students), and 16,006 master's students (7,112 full-time academic master's students, 6,533 full-time professional master's students, and 2,361 part-time professional master's students).

The school adheres to the fundamental principle of cultivating morality and educating people, and attaches equal importance to undergraduate and graduate education. It has formed a multidisciplinary education system with science and engineering as the main focus, and coordinated development of science, engineering, economics, management, literature, law, philosophy, and art. The school has a graduate school, 20 independent academic colleges on the main campus, 3 independent colleges on the development zone campus, 3 independent colleges on the Panjin campus, and 3 specialized colleges (innovation, international, and distance education) and 1 independent college (city college). There are 29 first-level doctoral programs, 138 second-level doctoral programs, 42 first-level master's programs, 235 second-level master's programs, 26 postdoctoral research stations, 20 professional degree categories such as business administration and public administration, 4 doctoral professional degree categories such as electronic information, machinery, materials and chemical engineering, civil engineering and water conservancy, and the right to confer master's degrees for in-service university teachers. The school's mechanics, mechanical engineering, and chemical engineering and technology were selected into the list of the second round of national "Double First-Class" construction disciplines, and 20 first-level disciplines were selected into Liaoning Province's first-class discipline construction projects. It has rich resources in advantageous disciplines and strong research strength. In the construction of a world-class university, the school focuses on the construction of chemistry and chemical engineering, equipment manufacturing, transportation, construction engineering, information science, as well as management, mathematics, Marxist theory and other "7+1" discipline clusters. There are 4 national key disciplines in the first-level disciplines and 6 national key disciplines in the second-level disciplines. In the results of the fourth round of national discipline evaluation, 7 disciplines entered Class A and 19 disciplines entered Class B; in the first national professional degree level evaluation, business administration and public administration were awarded A and A- respectively. 36 disciplines were listed in the Shanghai Soft Science Best Discipline Ranking, and 14 disciplines were among the top 10% in the country. 30 disciplines were listed in the Times China Discipline Rating Ranking, including 5 A+ disciplines and 16 A disciplines. The school is surrounded by mountains and the sea, and has excellent conditions for running schools. It has formed a school-running pattern of one school, two locations (Dalian City and Panjin City), and three districts (Dalian Lingshui Main Campus, Development Zone Campus, and Panjin Campus), with a total area of ​​3.5713 million square meters and a building area of ​​about 1.8850 million square meters. The school library currently has a physical collection of more than 3.73 million books (items), and has subscribed to 96 platforms and 268 databases, including about 1.75 million Chinese and foreign electronic books and more than 51,000 electronic journals. The school currently has a sports venue area of ​​155,000 square meters. The school has a first-class smart campus environment, with full coverage of wired and wireless networks in the three campuses. The campus card can realize identity authentication, payment and consumption through various methods such as swiping cards, scanning codes, and face recognition, and is integrated into the national public transportation application function. The "Dagong e-station" provides intelligent self-service for all teachers and students in the school, and the supercomputing center provides strong support for scientific research. The information construction and application are at an advanced level among domestic universities.

The university has planned new actions in the overall national opening-up situation, created a new pattern of internationalized education, and actively participated in promoting the joint construction of the "Belt and Road" education action and building a community with a shared future for mankind under the guidance of the internationalization strategy of "taking China as the main body and opening up education". It has established long-term and stable inter-school cooperation with 274 well-known overseas universities and 23 scientific research institutions in 41 countries and regions. At present, the university has three Sino-foreign cooperative education institutions (the cooperative universities are Ritsumeikan University in Japan, University of Leicester in the UK, and Belarusian State University) and one Sino-foreign cooperative education project (the cooperative university is the University of California, Irvine, USA). The school has more than 150 overseas exchange programs including national government-sponsored, joint training, exchange study, short-term exchange visits, etc. In recent years, more than 2,000 students have been sent abroad for long-term and short-term exchanges each year; more than 700 overseas experts and scholars have been hired annually for long-term and short-term studies, and nearly 20 national foreign expert projects have been approved. The number of teachers who go abroad for long-term and short-term government-sponsored, advanced studies, conferences, and visits is more than 1,700 per year; since 2021, the school has 1,077 international students.
