Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics was founded in October 1952 and is one of the first aviation colleges and universities founded by New China. In 1978, it was designated as a national key university by the State Council; in 1981, it was approved by the State Council to become one of the first universities in the country with the right to confer doctoral degrees; in 1996, it entered the national "211 Project" construction; in 2000, it was approved by the Ministry of Education to establish a graduate school; in 2011, it became a key construction university of the "985 Project Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform"; in 2017, it entered the national "Double First-Class" construction sequence, and the current three disciplines of aerospace science and technology, mechanics, and control science and engineering were selected in the second round of "first-class discipline" construction list. The school is now affiliated to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. In December 2012 and April 2021, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the Civil Aviation Administration of China signed agreements to jointly build Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. In December 2018, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Education, and Jiangsu Province jointly built Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

In the 70-year history of running schools, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics has upheld the tradition of "serving the country through aviation", followed the fine school spirit of "unity, frugality, pragmatism, and innovation", and practiced the school motto of "wisdom for all things, morality for the world", weathering the wind and rain, forging ahead, and constantly promoting the leapfrog development of the school. At present, the school has developed into a high-level research university with engineering as the main focus, combining science and engineering, and coordinated development of multiple disciplines such as engineering, science, economics, management, and liberal arts, with aerospace and civil aviation characteristics. The university now has 18 colleges and 192 scientific research institutions, 3 national (level) key laboratories, 1 national defense science and technology industry innovation center, 1 provincial and ministerial collaborative innovation center, 1 national and local joint engineering laboratory, 2 national engineering basic course teaching bases, 1 national basic discipline outstanding student training base, and 4 national experimental teaching demonstration centers. There are 62 undergraduate majors, 31 first-level master's degree authorization points, 17 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 3 doctoral professional degree authorization categories, 16 master's professional degree authorization categories, and 17 postdoctoral mobile stations. There are 2 national key disciplines in the first-level disciplines of aerospace science and technology and mechanics, 9 national key disciplines in the second-level disciplines, 2 national key (cultivation) disciplines, and 10 national defense characteristic disciplines.

The university currently uses three campuses: Ming Palace, Jiangjun Road, and Tianmu Lake, covering an area of ​​3,046 acres and a building area of ​​1.893 million square meters. The school library has a collection of more than 2.95 million printed documents, 156 Chinese and foreign databases, and more than 12.6 million electronic and digital document information resources. There are 3,526 faculty members, including 2,199 full-time teachers. Among the full-time teachers, there are 1,590 senior professional titles, 641 doctoral supervisors, 27 academicians, foreign academicians and "Qian Weichang Chair Professors", 89 other national high-level talents, 108 national young talents, and 846 people selected for various provincial and ministerial talent programs. There are 35,127 students (including 19,044 undergraduates, 15,262 postgraduates, and 821 degree students), and 2,361 adult education students.

The school has become an important base for the cultivation of high-level talents. Since its establishment, the university has trained more than 170,000 senior professionals of various types for the country. Among its alumni, there are 24 academicians of the two academies, dozens of provincial and ministerial party and government leaders and generals, as well as a large number of famous science and technology experts and management experts. The university is committed to cultivating social pillars and engineering talents with a sense of responsibility, innovative spirit, international vision, and humanistic feelings, constantly promoting education and teaching reforms, and gradually establishing an innovative talent training system with the characteristics of Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and has achieved a number of high-level teaching results. A total of 22 national teaching achievement awards were won; 32 national first-class undergraduate courses, 11 national high-quality resource sharing courses, and 6 national high-quality video open courses; 6 national excellent teaching teams; 28 national first-class undergraduate professional construction sites, 6 national characteristic majors, 8 key majors of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, 5 key majors of national defense, and 3 in-demand majors (directions). Students of Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics have achieved a number of remarkable results in various competitions at all levels: in the past four sessions of the China International "Internet +" College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, a total of 23 gold medals and 17 silver medals were won, and the "Advanced Collective Award" was won for four consecutive years. In the "Challenge Cup" National College Students' Extracurricular Academic and Technological Works Competition, the school won 12 special prizes, 19 first prizes, and 16 second prizes, winning the "Champion Cup" for nine consecutive sessions. In the "Challenge Cup" China College Students' Entrepreneurship Plan Competition, the school won 22 gold medals and 9 silver medals, winning the "Champion Cup" for four consecutive sessions. In the International Drone Grand Prix, the school won the special prize for four consecutive times. In the "Zhou Peiyuan Cup" National College Students' Mechanics Competition, the "China Software Cup" National College Students' Software Design Competition, the Electronic Design Competition, the Mechanical Innovation Design Competition and other competitions, students from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics have repeatedly won the championship.

The school's scientific research capabilities continue to increase. Since its establishment, the university has won 1,718 science and technology awards at or above the ministerial and provincial levels, including 82 national awards. It has built 6 national scientific research platforms, including the State Key Laboratory of Mechanical Structure Mechanics and Control, and 81 ministerial and provincial scientific research platforms. It has contributed several firsts to the Republic, including my country's first large unmanned target drone, the first unmanned nuclear test sampling machine, the first plateau unmanned aircraft, the first unmanned helicopter, the first micro-aircraft, etc. The independently developed "Tianxun-1" microsatellite was successfully launched. In the field of basic research, the school has achieved a number of theoretical achievements with important influence at home and abroad, such as "Generalized Eddy Theory of Helicopters", "Nonlinear Dynamics Theory of Vibration Control Systems", and "Aircraft Manufacturing Coordination Accuracy and Tolerance Allocation Theory". In the field of national defense science and technology, the school has participated in the pre-research, technical research, and experimental research of almost all important aviation models in my country. Many technologies have been successfully applied in aerospace projects such as the "Chang'e" series, making important contributions to the development of my country's aerospace industry. In the field of national economy, the university focuses on the major national strategic deployment, actively promotes the cooperation between government, industry, academia and research institutes, promotes the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, and builds the "International Innovation Port + School-Local Research Institute + Joint Laboratory + Technology Transfer Institution" achievement transformation model. It has been approved as a national technology transfer demonstration institution, a national intellectual property demonstration university, and a base for the transformation and technology transfer of scientific and technological achievements in colleges and universities, providing strong support for economic and social development.

The university vigorously promotes open education, actively carries out collaborative innovation, and has established a number of industry-university-research cooperation research bases; it has carried out extensive international exchanges and cooperation, and has established long-term and stable cooperative relations with nearly 100 famous universities and well-known research institutions abroad, forming a new open education pattern of "serving aerospace and civil aviation, serving Jiangsu, facing the whole country and the world".
