Nanjing Normal University is a national "double first-class" construction university and a Jiangsu high-level university construction university. The main source of the school can be traced back to the Sanjiang Normal School founded in 1902, which is one of the birthplaces of higher normal education in China. Later, it went through the Liangjiang Superior Normal School, Nanjing Higher Normal School, National Southeast University, National Fourth Sun Yat-sen University, Jiangsu University, National Central University, National Nanjing University and other periods; its other source was Huiwen College founded in 1888, which later developed into Jinling University. In 1951, it merged with Jinling Women's College of Arts and Sciences (formerly known as Jinling Women's University) to form the public Jinling University. In 1952, the colleges and departments of colleges and universities across the country were adjusted. Nanjing Normal College was established on the basis of the former Nanjing University, Public Jinling University and other related colleges and departments. The school was located at the site of the former Jinling Women's University. In 1984, it was changed to Nanjing Normal University. In 1996, it entered the ranks of national "211 Project" universities. In 2000, Nanjing Power College was incorporated. In 2015, it became a university jointly built by Jiangsu Province and the Ministry of Education. In 2017, it was selected as a national first-round "Double First-Class" construction university. In 2018, it became a "Double First-Class" construction university jointly built by the Ministry of Education and Jiangsu Province. In 2022, it was selected as a national second-round "Double First-Class" construction university.
