The school's predecessor was Shenyang Light Industry Senior Vocational School founded in 1950 and moved to Qingdao in 1956. In 1958, it was established as Shandong University of Chemical Technology with the approval of the Shandong Provincial People's Government and began the process of officially organizing higher education. In 1984, it was renamed Qingdao Institute of Chemical Technology with the approval of the Ministry of Education. In 1998, it was transferred to Shandong Province from the Ministry of Chemical Industry. In 2001, Qingdao Arts and Crafts School was merged. In March 2002, it was renamed Qingdao University of Science and Technology with the approval of the Ministry of Education.
