Shandong Jiaotong University is a full-time general undergraduate university with the characteristic of cultivating comprehensive transportation talents. It is a project construction unit of Shandong Province's higher education application-oriented talent training characteristic famous school, and a university jointly built by Shandong Province and the Ministry of Transport.

The school was founded in 1956, and its predecessor was the Jinan Automobile Machinery School of the Ministry of Transport. In 2000, the school was transferred from the Ministry of Transport to Shandong Province, and a management system jointly built by the central and local governments was implemented; in 2002, the Ministry of Education approved the merger of Jinan Jiaotong College and China Heavy Duty Truck Workers University to form Shandong Jiaotong University; in 2005, Shandong Water Transport School was incorporated; in 2011, the school was approved by the State Council Academic Degrees Committee as a pilot unit for training master's degree graduate students; in 2011, it was rated as a typical experience university in the "Top 50 National College Graduate Employment"; in 2016, Shandong Internal Combustion Engine Research Institute was incorporated as a whole; in 2017, it was approved as a Shandong Provincial Master's Degree Awarding Project Construction Unit (Class A). In 2019, it was approved as a civilized campus in Shandong Province; in 2020, it was selected as a university for the construction of "high-level disciplines" in Shandong Province. In 2021, it was approved as the first batch of supporting units for the construction of applied undergraduate universities in Shandong Province. After 65 years of development, the school has gradually developed into a university with engineering as the main focus and "management and management" as the support, with the characteristics of cultivating high-level applied professionals in the transportation industry with patriotism, international vision, innovative consciousness and practical spirit. It has trained more than 270,000 graduates of various types for the country and trained various management cadres and engineering and technical personnel in the transportation industry.

The school is located in Jinan, a long-standing cultural ancient city of Spring City. It runs schools in Jinan and Weihai, and has established four campuses: Jinan Changqing Campus, Wuyingshan Campus, East Campus and Weihai Campus. It has independent legal person research institutes in Linyi and Weihai, and has established the "Sino-Russian Transportation Education College", an overseas branch of Shandong Jiaotong University, in Irkutsk Oblast, Russia, and the "Shandong Jiaotong-Khon Kaen College" in Khon Kaen Province, Thailand. The school covers an area of ​​more than 3,200 acres, with a construction area of ​​more than 980,000 square meters, and the total value of teaching and scientific research equipment is nearly 410 million yuan. There are more than 2.2 million paper books and more than 136,000 electronic journals. There are more than 24,000 full-time undergraduate and junior college students, more than 530 graduate students, and more than 200 registered international students. The school currently has more than 1,470 full-time teachers, 635 of whom are professional and technical personnel with associate senior or higher professional and technical positions, 453 with doctoral degrees, 870 with master's degrees, and more than 380 graduate tutors. The school has 6 people enjoying special government allowances from the State Council, 1 young and middle-aged expert with outstanding contributions to the country, 5 young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions to Shandong Province, 15 provincial and ministerial outstanding teachers, more than 20 provincial and ministerial teaching and scientific research teams, and 15 people selected for provincial and ministerial key talent projects. In the "National General College Teachers Teaching Competition Analysis Report (2012-2020)" of the China Higher Education Society, our school ranked 162nd in the country, 9th in Shandong Province, and 3rd among newly established undergraduate colleges in the country.

The school mainly offers transportation-related majors, covering seven disciplines including "engineering, management, science, economics, literature, art, and law", and has built three major advantage professional groups: transportation construction, comprehensive transportation, and vehicle design and manufacturing; it has 19 colleges (departments), 62 undergraduate majors and two master's majors in transportation and machinery; it has 1 high-level discipline (advantageous and characteristic discipline) in Shandong Province, 4 provincial key disciplines (secondary disciplines); 2 national characteristic majors, 4 national first-class undergraduate major construction points, 7 provincial characteristic majors, 15 provincial first-class undergraduate major construction points, 2 majors that have passed engineering education certification, 5 provincial high-level application-oriented construction majors (groups), and 1 Shandong Province Education Service New and Old Kinetic Energy Conversion Professional Docking Industry Project; 5 national first-class undergraduate courses, 28 provincial first-class undergraduate courses, and 3 provincial university experimental teaching demonstration centers; in the past two sessions, it has won 18 provincial teaching achievement awards, including 1 special prize, 5 first prizes, and 9 second prizes.

The school has 38 research platforms at or above the municipal and departmental level, including 1 national key laboratory in the transportation industry, 1 laboratory of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (Shandong), 1 provincial key laboratory (preparatory), 3 provincial engineering technology research centers, 3 provincial engineering laboratories, 1 provincial university collaborative innovation center, 1 provincial marine engineering technology collaborative innovation center, 1 provincial key industry field accident prevention technology research center (transportation industry), 2 provincial big data development and innovation laboratories, 7 provincial transportation industry key laboratories, 11 prefecture-level key laboratories and engineering technology research centers, and 6 prefecture-level engineering laboratories. The school has won more than 10 scientific research awards at the provincial and ministerial levels and above, including the National Science and Technology Award, Shandong Science and Technology Award, Shandong Social Science Outstanding Achievement Award, etc. Among them, the "Support Technology and Engineering Application of Silt Roadbed Construction in the Middle and Lower Reaches of the Yellow River" won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award and the first prize of the Shandong Science and Technology Progress Award, and the "Research and Development of Efficient and Intelligent Full-Environment Simulation Road Acceleration Loading Experimental System" won the first prize of the Shandong Technology Invention Award.

The school adheres to open education, actively carries out foreign exchanges and cooperation, and is committed to cultivating compound talents with international vision and familiarity with international rules. It has established cooperative relations with more than 50 universities in nearly 20 countries including Russia, Belarus, the United Kingdom, and Germany, and has widely carried out teacher-student exchanges and academic and scientific research cooperation. It attaches importance to the education and training of international students, and has recruited nearly 1,000 international students from 50 countries. Actively responding to the national "Belt and Road" initiative, strengthening cooperation and exchanges with countries along the "Belt and Road", and jointly opening the first non-independent legal person Sino-Russian cooperative school-running institution in Shandong Province-Don River College with Don River State Technical University of Russia.
