Shandong University of Technology was founded in 1956 and is located in Zibo City, Shandong Province, the birthplace of the long-standing Qi culture. It is a university jointly built by the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense and the People's Government of Shandong Province, a high-level university construction unit in Shandong Province, and a multi-disciplinary university with science and engineering as the main focus of Shandong Province. The school is a national talent training model innovation experimental zone, the first batch of national "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" pilot units, a national intellectual property pilot university, the first batch of higher education scientific and technological achievements transformation and technology transfer bases of the Ministry of Education, a national education informatization pilot excellent unit, a national university foreign language teaching reform pilot unit, a national college student KAB entrepreneurship education base, a graduate recommendation qualification university, the first batch of civilized campuses in Shandong Province, and a "Shandong Province Smart Education Demonstration School" creation unit.

The school currently has 27 colleges and 24 school-level research institutes. It has 3 postdoctoral research stations, 4 first-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degrees, 25 first-level disciplines authorized for master's degrees, 21 authorized categories for master's professional degrees, 72 undergraduate majors, 3 provincial first-class disciplines, and provincial high-level disciplines such as agricultural engineering, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering (cultivation). Disciplines such as chemistry, engineering, and materials science have entered the top 1% of the global ESI ranking. The disciplines cover 9 categories such as engineering, science, economics, and management, and have formed a discipline and professional layout with coordinated development of multiple disciplines. There are more than 34,000 full-time undergraduate students and more than 4,900 graduate students.

The school is divided into two campuses, east and west, with a campus area of ​​3,600 acres and a building area of ​​1.17 million square meters. The library has a collection of 3.37 million books and 8.155 million electronic books and journals (including dissertations). The total value of teaching and scientific research equipment is 659 million yuan. It has 2 national (virtual simulation) experimental teaching demonstration centers, 4 national engineering practice education centers, 1 national key laboratory branch laboratory, 3 national engineering technology research centers (including branches), 2 national and local joint engineering research centers, 1 engineering research center of the Ministry of Education, 21 central and local co-construction laboratories, and a national key vocational teacher training base. It has 28 provincial teaching platforms such as the Shandong Provincial Ideological and Political Teaching Research Demonstration Center and the Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, 29 provincial science and technology research platforms such as the Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory and the Engineering Technology Research Center, and 14 provincial social science research platforms such as the Shandong Provincial Social Science Planning Key Research Base. From 2017 to 2019, it won 4 first prizes for outstanding achievements in social sciences in Shandong Province for three consecutive years.
