Shandong Normal University is located in the historical and cultural city of Jinan. Over the past 70 years since its establishment, the school has been rooted in the fertile soil of Qilu culture, absorbed the humanistic charm of the city of springs, adhered to the campus spirit of "respecting the virtuous and advocating merit, and striving for success" and the school motto of "promoting virtue and clarifying ambition, being knowledgeable and practicing", consciously inherited and innovated Qilu culture, and strived to highlight the characteristics of teacher education. The school's educational context can be traced back to the establishment of a normal school in Shandong University Hall in 1902. In October 1950, Shandong Normal University was established on the basis of the former School of Education of East China University and Shandong Provincial Administrative Cadre School. It is the earliest undergraduate university established in Shandong Province after the founding of New China. In 1952, the three departments of physics, chemistry and biology of the former Qilu University were merged. In September 1970, the school's organs and some departments moved to Liaocheng. In April 1974, it moved back to Jinan. In March 1981, the school was identified as a provincial key university; in August of the same year, it was renamed Shandong Normal University. In November 2012, the school was identified as one of the first batch of key construction application-based talent training characteristic schools in Shandong Province. In March 2014, the school was approved as a university jointly built by Shandong Province and the Ministry of Education. In November 2017, the school was awarded the first National Civilized Campus. In 2020, the school was selected as a high-level university in Shandong Province to "rush to the first-class" construction university.

The number of disciplines and professional degrees ranks among the top provincial universities. Lishan College currently has more than 1,300 students and has trained more than 20,290 graduates in 14 classes, winning a good social reputation.
