The school is located in Yantai, "China's most charming city". It is a provincial comprehensive university with liberal arts, science, engineering and agriculture as the main body and coordinated development of multiple disciplines. In 2012, it became the first batch of "Shandong Province's famous schools with characteristics of applied talent training" and served the national special needs doctoral talent training project unit. In 2014, it was approved as a postdoctoral research station in education. In 2017, it was approved as a "national typical experience university for innovation and entrepreneurship" and a "national university practice education innovation and entrepreneurship base". In 2020, it was identified as one of the 21 "double high" construction universities in Shandong Province.

【Cultural Heritage】The school was founded in 1930 in Laiyang, a thousand-year-old county with a long history and culture. It has gone through the historical stages of Shandong Provincial Second Rural Normal School, Jiaodong Public School, Jiaodong Normal School, Laiyang Normal School, Laiyang Normal College, Yantai Normal College, and Yantai Normal College. A large number of famous teachers and predecessors represented by Wu Boxiao, He Qifang, Zang Kejia, Lao She, Xiao Ping, etc. have promoted literature and education here, and cultivated a large number of outstanding talents who have devoted themselves to the practice of revolution, construction and reform, and nurtured the school motto of "virtue, erudition, constant innovation, and perseverance" and the excellent school spirit of "seeking truth, perfection, and practical application". In 2001, the Shandong Provincial Transportation School, which was originally directly under the Shandong Provincial Department of Transportation and founded in 1978, was merged. In 2006, the school was renamed Ludong University.

It has 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center, 3 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, and 6 "13th Five-Year Plan" Shandong Provincial Key Laboratories. [Discipline Construction] The school insists on discipline-based school, and the discipline strength is constantly increasing. There are 25 colleges, 74 research institutes (institutes), 62 undergraduate enrollment majors, 1 postdoctoral research mobile station, 1 doctoral talent training project serving national special needs, 21 first-level discipline master's degree programs, and 20 professional master's degree categories. It has 13 key disciplines in Shandong Province. In 2020, the discipline of water conservancy engineering was selected into the "high-level discipline" construction project of provincial universities. It is the only "advantageous and characteristic discipline" construction discipline in the same discipline in the province. Engineering has been ranked in the top 1% of the ESI global ranking for two consecutive years.

【Teaching Achievements】The school adheres to the talent training as the center, and the teaching quality has been steadily improved. In 2007, the school's undergraduate teaching level was rated as "excellent" by the Ministry of Education. In 2012, it became the first batch of advanced units for teacher education and provincial teacher education bases in Shandong Province. In 2017, it passed the review and evaluation of undergraduate teaching by the Ministry of Education. In 2019, it passed the aesthetic education evaluation and sports evaluation of Shandong Province. There are 10 national first-class undergraduate majors, 1 national comprehensive reform pilot major, 5 national characteristic major construction sites, 1 national college student practice education base, 12 provincial first-class undergraduate majors, 2 provincial talent training model innovation experimental areas, 3 provincial outstanding engineer training program pilot majors, 15 provincial brand specialty majors, 8 provincial high-level application-oriented project construction majors (groups), 2 provincial education service new and old kinetic energy conversion major docking industry projects, 5 national first-class undergraduate courses, 23 provincial first-class undergraduate courses, 53 provincial boutique courses, and 3 provincial bilingual teaching demonstration courses. [Scientific Research] The school attaches great importance to scientific research, and the level of scientific research has gradually improved. It has established a three-type interconnected and well-planned innovation platform system for scientific and engineering research, technological innovation and achievement transformation, and basic support and condition guarantee. It has 18 provincial and ministerial innovation platforms and humanities and social science research bases, including the National Language and Character Promotion Base, Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory for Language Resource Development and Application, Shandong Provincial Offshore Aerospace Equipment Technology Innovation Center, and Shandong Provincial Collaborative Innovation Center for High-Performance Fibers and Composite Materials. During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, a total of 264 national projects and 600 provincial and ministerial projects were approved, with a total project funding of 220.5 million yuan; 1,703 high-level papers were published, 217 academic monographs were published, 339 invention patents and 160 utility model patents were authorized; 69 provincial and ministerial awards were obtained. The annual research funding for 2020 was 100.19 million yuan, exceeding 100 million yuan for two consecutive years.

[Faculty] The school vigorously implements the strategy of strengthening the school with talents, and the quality of the faculty is constantly improving. There are 1,657 full-time teachers, 234 senior teachers, 564 associate senior teachers, 931 people with doctoral degrees, 72 experts with national talent titles and 83 provincial experts. There is currently one national teaching team for modern Chinese history, 9 provincial teaching teams such as modern Chinese history, 2 provincial scientific research teams such as the functional materials design and synthesis team and the superior discipline talent cultivation team, and 17 teams of the Shandong Higher Education Youth Innovation Team Development Plan.

【Serving the local area】The school deepens the integration of science, education, industry, and education, and builds a "five-in-one" service model for local areas, including talent training, technology development and achievement transformation, decision-making consultation, co-construction and sharing, and cultural inheritance and innovation. The school is one of the first 200 universities announced by the former State Education Commission that are qualified to accept foreign students, and one of the first 22 universities in the country that have passed the formal certification of the quality of higher education institutions studying in China. The school has established friendly exchanges and cooperation with more than 130 universities or institutions in more than 20 countries and regions. There are currently one country and regional research center of the Ministry of Education and one Sino-foreign cooperative education institution; the Confucius Institute of Loire was jointly built with the University of Angers and the Catholic University of the West in France, and the Yantai Sejong Academy was jointly built with the University of Southern Korea; 4 Sino-foreign cooperative education projects were jointly organized with foreign universities; 1 doctoral joint training project was held with Nishogakusha University in Japan and Lingnan University in South Korea; and "2+2", "3+1", "3+2" and other models of student joint training projects were carried out in cooperation with many foreign universities.

For more than 90 years, batches of students have stepped out of the school gate and entered the society. So far, the school has sent more than 310,000 graduates to the society. They are highly praised by employers for their high comprehensive quality, strong professionalism, solid basic knowledge and good professional skills, and have supported the regional economic and social development, especially the basic education.
