Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine was founded in 1958. In 1978, it was identified as a national key TCM school. In 1981, it became a key university in Shandong Province. It is an excellent school in the undergraduate teaching level evaluation of the Ministry of Education, a TCM school jointly built by the Shandong Provincial People's Government and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a famous school with characteristics of cultivating applied basic talents in Shandong Province, a provincial civilized campus in Shandong Province, and a high-level discipline and high-level university in Shandong Province. The school has the most national key disciplines among provincial universities, and was the first to obtain master's and doctoral degree authorizations. It was the first to become the chief undertaking unit of the national "973" project, and the number of master's degree programs ranks among the top universities of the same type in the country.

In 2007, the school moved from Lixia District, Jinan City to Changqing, the hometown of Bian Que, with a total area of ​​2,039 acres and a building area of ​​560,000 square meters. There are more than 23,000 full-time students, including more than 18,000 undergraduates and nearly 4,800 graduate students. The library has a collection of 2.089 million books, more than 781,000 electronic books, and nearly 30,000 rare ancient books. It is a key ancient book protection unit in Shandong Province. The school has 17 teaching institutions, 5 scientific research institutions, and 4 teaching auxiliary institutions. There are 3 directly affiliated hospitals, including the Affiliated Hospital of Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the Affiliated Eye Hospital of Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 12 non-directly affiliated hospitals, and 31 teaching hospitals. There are currently 10 Shandong Provincial Postgraduate Joint Training Bases, 17 National Standardized Training Bases for TCM Residents, 1 National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, and 1 National Off-campus Practice Education Base for College Students.

In the 2021 Soft Science China Best Discipline Ranking, Chinese Medicine ranked 6th, Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine ranked 5th, and Clinical Medicine continued to remain in the top 1% of ESI globally. It has successively won the top 50 universities with typical experience in innovation and entrepreneurship in the country, the champion of the finals of the second national "Huangdi Neijing" knowledge competition, the gold medal of the fourth China "Internet +" college student innovation and entrepreneurship competition, and the first national college student Chinese and Western medicine clinical skills competition group special prize. There are 3 postdoctoral research stations in traditional Chinese medicine, Chinese pharmacy, and integrated Chinese and Western medicine, 1 key laboratory of the Ministry of Education, 1 national clinical medicine research sub-center for cardiovascular diseases in traditional Chinese medicine, 3 national regional traditional Chinese medicine diagnosis and treatment centers, 6 third-level key laboratories of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 2 key research rooms of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and 2 national academic school inheritance studios. It has a national clinical research base for traditional Chinese medicine and a national major new drug creation platform (Shandong) Chinese medicine unit platform. There are 27 provincial scientific research and innovation platforms such as Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory and Shandong Provincial Engineering Technology Research Center. Since the 13th Five-Year Plan, it has undertaken more than 1,230 scientific research projects at or above the department and bureau level, including 137 national projects. In 2018 and 2019, it won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award for two consecutive years, and won a total of 4 first prizes of Shandong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award. Signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Jinan City and built the Scientific Research and Innovation Building of Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Together with Jinan City, Macau University of Science and Technology, and Nanyue Group, we have built the Lu-Ao Traditional Chinese Medicine Industry Research Institute to create an international cooperation center in the field of quality research of traditional Chinese medicine, new traditional Chinese medicine and its series of product research and development. Facing the modernization and internationalization of traditional Chinese medicine, we have built the International Medical Science Center Science and Education Integration Practice Base with Jinan City. Together with Qingdao City, we have built the Qingdao Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Qingdao Marine Traditional Chinese Medicine Research Institute, and the Affiliated Qingdao Hospital to create a high-level talent training base, an important scientific and technological research and development base, and an advanced medical service base in the field of traditional Chinese medicine. The base in cooperation with Lunan Pharmaceutical and Inspur Group has been approved as a demonstration base for joint training of graduate students in the integration of industry and education in Shandong Province. We have signed a series of strategic cooperation agreements with local governments such as Linqing City and Huimin County, departments and units such as the Provincial Drug Administration and the Provincial Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences, institutions such as Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine and Huanggang Normal University, and companies such as Lunan Pharmaceutical and Freda, striving to transform the advantages of education and teaching, scientific research, traditional Chinese medicine culture, and medical services into advantages in the innovation and development of the health industry.

Give full play to the advantages of "Qilu culture, hometown of Bian Que, and birthplace of acupuncture" and "three business cards" to shape the unique university cultural character. By holding the Nishan World Traditional Chinese Medicine Forum, the China (Changqing) Bian Que Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture Festival, the International Forum on Bian Que Culture and the Inheritance and Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine Classics, the Sixth Chinese Medicine Science Conference, the Seventh World Conference on Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, and the First Jinan Bian Que Forum, the "Hometown of Bian Que" cultural brand has become popular. By hosting the national "Taishan Moxibustion" academic conference, appropriate moxibustion techniques have been widely promoted. The first provincial-level collaborative innovation center for traditional Chinese medicine culture in the country was established, and it became a demonstration collaborative innovation center for higher education institutions in Shandong Province. The first traditional Chinese medicine think tank in the province was approved, and the Confucian Medicine Culture Research Association was established. The academic office of "Chinese Medical Collection", the largest and most systematic project of the TCM ancient book compilation and protection plan since the founding of New China, is affiliated with our school. Focusing on the dissemination of traditional Chinese medicine culture, the "Ten Thousand Primary and Secondary School Students Entering Campus" activity has been widely carried out. The Shandong Provincial Museum of Traditional Chinese Medicine has been approved as a national traditional Chinese medicine culture publicity and education base, a Shandong Provincial Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture Tourism Demonstration Base, and a Shandong Provincial Social Science Popularization Education Base.

The school adheres to open education and foreign exchanges, and continuously promotes Chinese medicine to "go global". It has established cooperative relations with nearly 200 higher education and medical research institutions in the world, and carried out exchanges and cooperation related to Chinese medicine, among which there are more than 40 active and close international partners. The school is the affiliated unit of the World Federation of Acupuncture-induced Diseases Working Committee and the World Federation of Chinese Medicine's External Therapy, Pulse, Internal Medicine, Antiviral and other professional committees, and undertakes the construction of national high-level foreign exchange platforms such as "National Traditional Chinese Medicine Service Export Base", "China-Poland Traditional Chinese Medicine Center", "China-Nepal Traditional Chinese Medicine Center", "International Cooperation Base for External Therapy of Traditional Chinese Medicine", and "International Cooperation Base for Optometry and Myopia Prevention and Control of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine". The International School of Ophthalmology and Optometry, co-organized with Pacific University of Oregon, USA, is the first Sino-foreign cooperative school in the field of optometry and traditional Chinese medicine in China, and is the first international cooperation project of the Jinan International Medical Science Center.

The school adheres to the principle of great medical sincerity and great virtue, and continuously improves the health service capacity of traditional Chinese medicine. The affiliated hospital is a national demonstration hospital of traditional Chinese medicine, a national clinical research base of traditional Chinese medicine, a construction unit of the national traditional Chinese medicine inheritance and innovation project, a national drug clinical trial institution, a national traditional Chinese medicine examination work base, and the first national traditional Chinese medicine training base. The second affiliated hospital is the first provincial hospital of integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine in Shandong Province. It has been identified as the quality control center of traditional Chinese medicine for preventing diseases in the province. It has taken the lead in establishing the Shandong Provincial Alliance of Traditional Chinese Medicine for Preventing Diseases; promoted the construction of the traditional Chinese and western medicine rehabilitation alliance, and approved the construction project of the integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine geriatric medicine complex building; and was approved by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine for the construction project of the health information platform of the traditional Chinese medicine hall of the provincial traditional Chinese medicine data center. The affiliated ophthalmology hospital has been approved as the first tertiary-level A-class specialized ophthalmology hospital in Shandong Province, the international cooperation base for integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine optometry and myopia prevention and control, the Shandong branch of the National Clinical Medical Research Center for Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases, and the Shandong Provincial Optometry Quality Control Center.
