The foundation of Shandong Youth Political College is the Shandong Youth League School founded in 1949. In 1987, Shandong Youth Management Cadre College was established with the approval of the former State Education Commission and the Shandong Provincial People's Government. In 2010, Shandong Youth Political College was established with the approval of the Ministry of Education and became a full-time general undergraduate college.

The school is a provincial civilized campus, and was awarded the excellent performance appraisal of provincial institutions in Shandong Province in 2019 and 2020. It is one of the first batch of universities supported by the construction of applied undergraduate universities in Shandong Province. Cultivating "young political talents" is the original intention and mission of the school. In recent years, the school has adhered to the application-oriented school-running positioning, implemented the fundamental task of cultivating morality and cultivating people, and deeply implemented the "one strengthening and two expansion" development strategy, further strengthening and refining the "youth politics" school-running characteristics. The school focuses on humanities and social sciences, and currently has 43 undergraduate majors, including 38 general undergraduate majors and 5 vocational education undergraduate majors, covering 7 disciplines including economics, law, literature, engineering, management, art, and education. Nine majors in the three professional groups of social work, dance choreography, and radio and television are high-level applied project construction majors (groups) in Shandong Province. Eight undergraduate majors have been rated as first-class undergraduate construction sites in Shandong Province, and 26 undergraduate courses have been approved as first-class undergraduate courses in Shandong Province.
