The predecessor of Shangrao Normal University was Shangrao Teachers College founded in 1958. It was renamed Gandongbei University in 1959 and closed during the Cultural Revolution. It was reopened in 1977 and upgraded to Shangrao Normal University in March 2000 with the approval of the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Jiangxi Province. In November 2005, it passed the undergraduate teaching level evaluation of the Ministry of Education. In November 2017, it accepted the review and evaluation of undergraduate teaching by the Ministry of Education.

At present, the campus covers an area of ​​1,594 acres, with a total building area of ​​478,800 square meters, equivalent to 16,396 students. There are 1,251 faculty members, including 81 professors (senior), 249 associate professors (deputy senior), and 269 doctors. Among the teachers, there are 2 experts enjoying special government allowances from the State Council, 1 candidate for the "Ganpo Talent 555 Project" leading talent training program, 2 experts with special allowances from the provincial government, 2 famous teachers in Jiangxi universities, 4 young and middle-aged academic leaders in Jiangxi universities, 27 young and middle-aged backbone teachers in Jiangxi universities, 16 candidates for Jiangxi's "New Century Hundred Thousand Talents Project", 3 candidates for Jiangxi's "Double Thousand Plan", 1 "Jiangxi University Young Jinggang Scholar", 1 Jinggang Scholar Distinguished Professor, 2 Jiangxi Cultural Celebrities and "Four Ones" Talents, 1 Outstanding Young Talent Training Program for Science and Technology Innovation in Jiangxi Province, 1 Academic and Technical Leader in Major Disciplines in Jiangxi Province, 3 part-time doctoral supervisors, and 59 part-time master supervisors.

The school has been approved for two national specialty majors, chemistry and mathematics and applied mathematics. The preschool education major is a pilot major for the comprehensive reform of the Ministry of Education. It has been approved for three provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites, physical education, physics, and chemistry. It has been approved for 54 provincial undergraduate teaching projects (quality engineering). There are 15 secondary colleges. There are teaching and auxiliary institutions such as the Information and Educational Technology Center, the Library, and the Journal Editorial Department. There are more than 30 scientific research institutions and 9 academic studios, including the Zhuzi Institute, the Fang Zhimin Spirit and the Northeast Jiangxi Economic and Social Development Research Center, the Calligraphy Education Research Institute, and the Southern Camellia Science Research Institute. There are 1 provincial first-class discipline, 5 provincial key disciplines, and 12 provincial scientific research platforms, including: 2 provincial key laboratories, 2 provincial engineering (technology) research centers, 7 provincial philosophy and social sciences, cultural and artistic science research bases (centers), and 1 Jiangxi Branch of the Research Center for the History of the Republic of China jointly built with Nanjing University. In addition, it has participated in the joint construction of 3 provincial engineering (technology) research centers and 3 provincial university experimental teaching demonstration centers with other units.

The school has relatively complete teaching and research facilities, including digital campus network, professional laboratories, language rooms, multimedia classrooms, gymnasiums, standard plastic track and field and other advanced teaching and experimental facilities. As of December 2021, there are 1.64 million paper books, 1.82 million electronic books, and teaching and research instruments with a total value of 192 million yuan. In the past five years, teachers have undertaken 531 national and provincial (ministerial) scientific research projects, published 80 monographs, published 2,042 academic papers in provincial and above journals, obtained 245 patent authorizations, and 34 scientific research results have won provincial and ministerial awards.

The school actively expands international cooperative education projects. At present, it has carried out multi-level, multi-channel and diversified international cooperative education with more than ten universities in the United States, Britain, France, Canada, Thailand, Malaysia, South Korea and other countries.

The school has a profound cultural heritage and practices the concept of "building schools with politics, strengthening schools with quality, establishing schools with characteristics, and running schools with integrity", forming a distinct normal, regional and multi-disciplinary school-running characteristics. The medium-term goal is to successfully apply for a master's degree, and the medium- and long-term goals are to create first-class higher normal education and Shangrao Normal University in the province, and to fully embark on a new journey of high-quality and leapfrog development.
