Gannan Normal University is located in Ganzhou City, a national historical and cultural city, a sub-central city of Jiangxi Province, and a city with the reputation of "Song City in Jiangnan", "Cradle of Hakka", and "Red Capital". The school was founded in June 1958 as Gannan Normal College; in 1984, it was renamed Gannan Normal College and upgraded to a provincial undergraduate normal college; in 2003, it became a master's degree awarding institution; in March 2016, it was renamed Gannan Normal University with the approval of the Ministry of Education; in December 2017, it successfully accepted the review and evaluation of undergraduate teaching work by the Ministry of Education, and the expert group evaluated the school as "an excellent regional normal university with distinctive characteristics and good prospects".

The school currently has three campuses, Huangjin, Zhanggong, and Baita (University Science and Technology Park), covering an area of ​​nearly 2,300 acres, with a school building area of ​​850,000 square meters and a library collection of more than 2.38 million books. It has 18 teaching units, 1 independent college, 1 affiliated middle school, 2 affiliated primary schools, and 1 affiliated kindergarten. It has 67 undergraduate majors covering 10 disciplines (2 national specialty majors, 6 national first-class specialty construction sites, a batch of provincial first-class majors, provincial brand majors, provincial specialty majors, and provincial first-class specialty construction sites), 17 first-level discipline master's programs, and 11 master's professional degree authorization points. It recruits students from 28 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) across the country, and 18 undergraduate majors are included in the first batch of enrollment. It is a publicly funded normal student training university in Jiangxi Province. There are more than 21,000 full-time students, including more than 2,000 graduate students.

The school currently has more than 1,200 full-time teachers, including more than 600 senior professional and technical personnel. It has three national scientific research service platforms and 21 provincial scientific research platforms, including the National Navel Orange Engineering Technology Research Center, the Ministry of Education's Key Research Base for Humanities and Social Sciences - the Research Center for the Revolutionary Spirit and Cultural Resources of the Communist Party of China, and the National Industrial Design Center. It has also built three provincial "2011 Collaborative Innovation Centers" and two postdoctoral research workstations, and founded the first academic journal in the country that specializes in the study of red culture, the Journal of Red Culture. In the past five years, the school has undertaken more than 1,100 national and provincial scientific research projects such as the National Key R&D Program, the National Natural Science Foundation, and the National Social Science Foundation. The school attaches great importance to open education, relying on the Jiangxi Provincial Primary and Secondary School Principal (Teacher) Training Base, Jiangxi Gannan and other former Central Soviet Area Revitalization and Development Soft Science Research Base, Gannan Soviet Area Talent Development Cooperation Research Institute, National Studies Research Institute and "Professor Doctor Service Group" and other platforms, actively serving local basic education and economic and social development. The school actively promotes international exchanges and cooperation, and has established good cooperative relations with relevant universities and educational institutions in 10 countries including the United States, Russia, France, South Korea, and Thailand. It undertook the construction of my country's first Confucius Institute in West Africa, the Confucius Institute at the University of Sierra Leone, and was rated as the world's "Advanced Confucius Institute". Since 2016, it has been commissioned by the National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language to conduct art tours in 18 Confucius Institutes in 11 countries in four continents, including Asia, Africa, Europe and America, for four consecutive years. It was approved to establish the "Singapore Research Center", a country and regional research base of the Ministry of Education; and cooperated with Penza State University of Russia to organize the first Sino-foreign cooperative education project for undergraduate music majors in Jiangxi Province. It was approved for the Chinese Government Scholarship and the International Chinese Teacher Scholarship, and has enrolled nearly 200 international students from more than 20 countries in the past three years.
