Hunan Institute of Technology

Hunan Institute of Technology is located in Xiangtan City, Hunan Province, the hometown of the great man Mao Zedong. It is an undergraduate college organized by the People's Government of Hunan Province. The school is a pilot university for master's professional degree graduate education in the "Talent Training Project for Serving National Special Needs" of the Ministry of Education, and the first batch of "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" and "New Engineering Research and Practice Project" implemented by the Ministry of Education; it is a construction unit for the project of granting master's degrees in Hunan Province, the first batch of universities selected in the "2011 Plan", a high-level application-oriented college in the "Double First-Class" construction of Hunan Province, and a first batch of undergraduate enrollment units in Hunan Province.

Hunan Engineering College was established in June 2000 by merging the former Xiangtan Mechanical and Electrical College (founded in 1951, affiliated to the former Ministry of Machinery Industry, and a national model engineering college key construction school) and Hunan Textile College (founded in 1978, affiliated to the former Hunan Provincial Textile Industry Bureau). From 1958 to 1963, the predecessor of Xiangtan Mechanical and Electrical College, "Xiangtan Electric Machinery College", offered 5 years of undergraduate education.

In 2000, the school took the lead in establishing an applied undergraduate education orientation among local universities nationwide, forming a distinctive feature of cultivating engineering applied talents. The school is the deputy leader of the "National Engineering Applied Undergraduate Education Cooperation Group", the deputy director of the "National Higher Education Teaching Research Association Applied Undergraduate College Special Committee", the chairman of the "General Higher Education Applied Talent Training Planning Textbook Editing Committee", the vice chairman of the "National Local University Excellent Engineering Education School-Enterprise Alliance", the director of the "China Education International Exchange Association Applied University International Exchange Branch" and the deputy director of the "Hunan Province General University New Engineering Construction Cooperation Group". In 2007, it passed the undergraduate teaching work level evaluation of the Ministry of Education with excellent results; in 2018, it passed the teaching work review and evaluation of the Ministry of Education.

The school currently has two campuses, the main campus and the south campus, with a campus area of ​​1,830 acres and a building area of ​​540,000 square meters. The school is close to the river and the lake, with an elegant environment and the fragrance of ink and books. It is a "garden-style unit", "civilized university" and "civilized campus" in Hunan Province.

The school closely connects with the development needs of the regional economy and the electromechanical and textile industries. With the goal of cultivating high-quality applied talents, it has formed advantageous professional groups such as electrical, mechanical, textile, chemical, management, and information, covering six disciplines: engineering, management, literature, science, economics, and art. There are currently 20 teaching and research units, 52 undergraduate enrollment majors, and 2 master's professional degree categories. It has 8 application-specific disciplines for the "Double First-Class" construction in Hunan Province; 8 majors for the implementation of the "Excellence Plan" of the Ministry of Education; 8 national and provincial specialty majors, 6 national and provincial professional comprehensive reform pilot majors, 2 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, and 22 provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites. Three majors, Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation, Electrical Engineering and Automation, and Chemical Engineering and Technology, have passed the engineering education professional certification. The school currently has 4 national-level practical education platforms, 1 national-level university student science and technology innovation team, 32 provincial-level innovation and entrepreneurship platforms, 25 provincial-level school-enterprise cooperation talent training demonstration bases and excellent internship bases, 157 Ministry of Education industry-university cooperation collaborative education projects, 1 national-level first-class undergraduate course, 11 provincial-level quality courses, 32 provincial-level first-class undergraduate courses, 2 provincial-level curriculum ideological and political demonstration courses, 9 provincial-level virtual simulation experiment centers, and 3 modern industrial colleges. The metalworking practice base is a training and examination center for metalworking practice teaching instructors in colleges and universities determined by the Ministry of Education.

The school adheres to the talent-strengthening school project. There are 1,284 faculty and staff, including 1,078 full-time teachers and 399 teachers with senior professional titles; 955 teachers with doctoral and master's degrees, and 171 doctoral and master's supervisors. There are 3 national model (excellent) teachers, 8 experts enjoying special allowances from the State Council and the provincial government, 3 new century excellent talents of the Ministry of Education, and 6 members of the professional teaching guidance committee of the Ministry of Education and the Department of Education; 12 provincial teaching masters, provincial and ministerial excellent teachers, 14 provincial subject leaders, more than 90 provincial talents such as "Huxiang high-level talents", provincial "Hundred Talents Program", and provincial "New Century 121 Talent Project" candidates; 11 provincial teaching teams and provincial university science and technology innovation teams.

The school actively promotes scientific research and vigorously improves its scientific and technological innovation and social service capabilities. It has 24 provincial scientific research platforms such as the "2011" Collaborative Innovation Center of Provincial Universities and Provincial Key Laboratories; 1 provincial school-local cooperation base, and 3 provincial university industry-university-research cooperation demonstration bases. In the past five years, the university has undertaken 33 national key R&D projects, 305 provincial and ministerial research projects, and 1,007 horizontal research projects, with a total research funding of 490 million yuan, 32 scientific research achievement awards (including 16 provincial and ministerial awards), 569 authorized patents, 2,843 high-level academic papers, and 35 academic monographs. The school has vigorously strengthened industry-university-research cooperation, and has carried out industry-university-research cooperation with 546 companies, generating economic benefits of more than 20 billion yuan.

The school adheres to the strategy of open school-running and conducts in-depth foreign exchanges and cooperation. It is one of the earliest universities in Hunan Province to start Sino-foreign cooperative education projects. It has established friendly cooperative relations with more than 30 universities in more than 20 countries including the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Germany, and has opened international cooperative education projects for 2 undergraduate majors. In 2019, it will carry out education for international students in China and recruit international students from countries along the "Belt and Road".

The school has always been based in Hunan, facing the whole country, and serving the regional economy and industrial development. After 70 years of engineering education, 21 years of exploration and practice of applied undergraduate talent training, 11 years of in-depth implementation of the "Excellence Plan", and 10 years of professional degree graduate education, it has provided more than 180,000 high-quality applied talents for the electromechanical, textile industries and social and economic construction.
