Hunan University of Chinese Medicine is located in Changsha, a famous historical and cultural city in China. It is a key undergraduate university in Hunan Province, one of the first universities in the country to establish national key disciplines, and one of the first Chinese medicine universities in the country to recruit doctoral students, international students, and students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. The school currently has two major campuses, Pu and Dongtang, covering an area of ​​1,019 acres. It has 19 colleges, 1 asset management company, 2 directly affiliated hospitals, and 13 non-directly affiliated hospitals.

The predecessor of the school was Hunan National Medical College founded in 1934. In 1957, Hunan Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine was established. In 1960, Hunan College of Traditional Chinese Medicine was established as an undergraduate college. In 1965, the Provincial Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine was integrated into the school. In 1972, the school was re-divided and restored to its original structure. In 1979, it became one of the first colleges in China to obtain the qualification for graduate education in traditional Chinese medicine. In 1990, the former Hunan University of Science and Technology was integrated into Hunan College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 1994, it became one of the first colleges of traditional Chinese medicine in China to recruit foreign students. In 2002, it merged with Hunan Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 2006, it was renamed Hunan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine with the approval of the Ministry of Education. In 2012, it entered the first-class enrollment sequence of Hunan Province. In 2018, it was successfully selected as a "domestic first-class university" in Hunan Province. The current party secretary is Qin Yuhui and the president is Dai Aiguo.

The school adheres to the concept of running a school with characteristics, and the characteristics of traditional Chinese medicine are comprehensively improved. There are 28 undergraduate majors, covering five major disciplines: medicine, science, engineering, management, and liberal arts. There are 2 postdoctoral research stations, 3 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 23 second-level doctoral degree authorization points, and 1 doctoral professional degree authorization point; 9 first-level master's degree authorization points, 69 second-level master's degree authorization points, and 7 master's professional degree authorization points. Traditional Chinese medicine was selected as a "domestic first-class construction discipline", and integrated Chinese and Western medicine and pharmacy were selected as "domestic first-class cultivation disciplines". The school has established a three-level key discipline system at the national, ministerial, provincial and school levels, with 1 national key discipline, 23 key disciplines of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 2 key disciplines with advantages and characteristics of Hunan Province, 8 key disciplines of Hunan Province, and 20 key disciplines at the school level. In the fourth round of discipline evaluation by the State Council in 2017, our school's traditional Chinese medicine, integrated Chinese and Western medicine, pharmacy, and Chinese medicine degree were listed. Chinese medicine diagnosis continues to maintain its leading position among Chinese medicine colleges and universities nationwide. Key disciplines such as Chinese medicine internal medicine, Chinese medicine otolaryngology, acupuncture and massage, basic integration of Chinese and Western medicine, clinical integration of Chinese and Western medicine, and pharmacy have distinct Chinese medicine characteristics and their domestic status has been steadily improved.

The school adheres to the strategy of strengthening the school with talents, and the level of the teaching staff has been comprehensively improved. There are 1,505 full-time teachers, 667 teachers with associate senior titles or above, 105 doctoral supervisors, 492 master's supervisors, and 74 experts who enjoy special allowances from the State Council and the provincial government. More than 100 national high-level talents have been independently trained, including national medical masters, "Yangtze River Scholars" specially appointed professors, leading talents of the national "Ten Thousand Talents Plan", and national candidates of the Hundred Thousand Talents Project. There are more than 170 famous teachers and doctors, including national famous teachers, national famous Chinese medicine practitioners, provincial Furong teaching teachers, provincial teaching and educating models, and provincial famous Chinese medicine practitioners. The school insists on both attracting and training talents, and has produced a large number of young and middle-aged experts and scholars, including outstanding talents of the National TCM Inheritance and Innovation "Hundreds of Millions" Talent Project (Qihuang Project), young Qihuang scholars, Hunan Province's leading scientific and technological talents, candidates for the Provincial "121" Innovation Talent Project, "Furong Scholars", and candidates for the "225" Project for high-level health talents, which has accumulated a solid talent foundation for the creation of a first-class TCM university.

The school adheres to the concept of quality education, and the quality of talent training has been comprehensively improved. There are currently 21,429 full-time undergraduates and 3,266 graduate students. There are currently 5 national first-class undergraduate professional construction sites and 15 provincial ones; 11 national and provincial characteristic majors, 6 national and provincial professional comprehensive reform pilots; 10 national and provincial quality courses, 3 national course ideological and political demonstration projects; 7 national first-class courses, 118 provincial first-class courses; 5 national and provincial teaching teams. There are 1 national practical teaching demonstration center, 5 provincial practical teaching demonstration centers, 6 national and provincial virtual simulation experimental teaching projects; 1 national off-campus practical education base for college students, 6 provincial innovation training centers for college students, 6 provincial school-enterprise cooperation innovation and entrepreneurship education bases; 7 provincial school-enterprise cooperation talent training demonstration bases.

In the past five years, students have won more than 270 national and provincial awards, including the first prize of the National Chinese Medicine Clinical Ability Competition, the first prize of the National Chinese and Western Medicine Combined College Students Clinical Ability Competition, the first prize of the National College Students Life Science Competition, the gold medal of the China College Students Medical Technology Skills Competition, the first prize of the National Finals of the China College Students Service Outsourcing Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, and the first prize of the National Chinese Medicine College "Yuanzhi Cup" Works Competition. The school has trained more than 150,000 elite talents with the development of traditional Chinese medicine as the main body, and alumni are all over the world.

The school adheres to the strategy of strengthening the school with science and technology, and its social service capabilities are comprehensively improved. During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, a new scientific research building and experimental animal center were built, 24,000 square meters of new scientific research laboratories were added, and 96 scientific research platforms of various levels and types were built; the construction of the Institute's Heritage and Innovation Technology Building with an investment of 250 million yuan has started. More than 1,600 scientific research projects of various levels and types were approved, and about 320 million yuan of scientific research funds were approved, achieving breakthroughs in major national projects such as the Ministry of Science and Technology's major new drug creation special project and the regional joint National Natural Science Foundation key project; 481 patents were authorized and 164 scientific research awards of various levels and types were obtained, including 58 provincial and ministerial awards. "Theoretical System and Methodology Research on Pharmacokinetics and Spectrokinetics of Traditional Chinese Medicine" won the first prize of Hunan Natural Science Award; "Yinhuang Qingfei Capsule" became the first Chinese patent medicine to complete clinical registration in Pakistan. The Digital Traditional Chinese Medicine Collaborative Innovation Center and the Hunan Traditional Chinese Medicine Resource Protection and Utilization Collaborative Innovation Center passed the acceptance. Academician Atta's only academician workstation in China-the "Belt and Road" Traditional Medicine Academician Workstation settled in our school; Academician Liu Liang's workstation was established to promote the construction of a highland of traditional Chinese medicine in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The English journal Digital Chinese Medicine (DCM) founded by our school is the first high-starting new journal approved by the "China Science and Technology Journal International Influence Enhancement Plan Project" among Chinese medicine colleges and universities in the country, and has been officially included in the Scopus database.

The school took the lead in establishing the Hunan Traditional Chinese Medicine Industry Technology Innovation Alliance, and signed strategic cooperation agreements with various cities in the province, developed more than 70 new Chinese medicines, transferred 62 scientific and technological achievements, and the transfer fees for scientific and technological development and new drugs reached 130 million yuan. There are 157 in-hospital preparations in directly affiliated hospitals, and the sales volume in the past three years has reached more than 330 million yuan. New Chinese herbal medicines such as Gu Han Health Essence, Yigan Ning Granules, Ganfule Tablets, Donkey Glue Blood-Replenishing Granules, Gynecological Qianjin Tablets, Simo Decoction, Dai Wenjiu Paste, Tianma Shouwu Tablets, Yilingjing, Saxifraginin Tablets, Xintai Tablets and health products such as Zhonghua Huanghuan Liquid, Shennong Tea, Shengli Shengong Oral Liquid were all developed or participated in by the school (institute), and have become the flagship products or well-known brands of traditional Chinese medicine manufacturers in and outside the province, such as Tus-Gu Han, Jiuzhitang, Qianjin Pharmaceutical, Hansen Pharmaceutical, Zhengqing Pharmaceutical, and Xiangtan Feige Pharmaceutical, generating huge social and economic benefits, with a cumulative output value of more than 20 billion yuan. Among them, "Zhengqing Fengtongning sustained-release tablets" is the first sustained-release preparation of traditional Chinese medicine in my country; "Yining injection" fills the gap of traditional Chinese medicine injection for the treatment of acute pancreatitis; Ganfule tablets are the first anti-cancer Class II new Chinese medicine in China; Anjunning is the first Chinese medicine for drug rehabilitation in China; Beeswax capsules are the first Class II new Chinese medicine in our province; the research results of the "Research and Industrialization of Key Technologies for Ultrafine Powders of Traditional Chinese Medicine" project have been promoted and applied in major traditional Chinese medicine hospitals in Hunan Province, and won the first prize of Hunan Patent Award and the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award. The cumulative sales of ultrafine Chinese medicine have reached more than 1 billion yuan; Gu Han Yangshengjing has been popular for 30 years since its launch. It is a "well-known Chinese trademark", "national secret technology project" and "national key new product". For many years, it has been ranked at the top of the sales list of drugstores in Hunan Province as a kidney-nourishing OTC drug, with a cumulative sales of more than 5 billion yuan. Through the implementation of the achievement transformation project, more than 50 GAP bases in the province have been built, the planting area of ​​traditional Chinese medicine has reached 1.7 million mu, and the annual added output value has reached 700 million yuan.

There are 2 directly affiliated hospitals and 13 non-directly affiliated hospitals. The directly affiliated hospitals have advanced medical facilities, complete clinical departments and many well-known experts. The First Affiliated Hospital is a national TCM clinical research base, a construction unit of the national "TCM Inheritance and Innovation Project", and the first batch of national new drug (TCM) clinical trial institutions. Three specialties, gynecology, ophthalmology, and acupuncture, have been selected for the national regional TCM diagnosis and treatment center construction project. The Second Affiliated Hospital is a national key construction hospital of TCM, a national drug clinical research and trial base and medical device clinical trial base, and a national TCM characteristic bone injury treatment capacity construction base. Three specialties, anorectal, orthopedics, and dermatology, have been selected for the Hunan regional TCM diagnosis and treatment center construction project. The Affiliated Hospital of the Provincial Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Affiliated Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine) is a national second batch of TCM clinical research base construction units, the leading unit of the national TCM and Western medicine combined prevention and treatment of major difficult diseases (primary liver cancer) clinical collaboration pilot project, and the oncology and geriatrics departments have been selected for the national regional TCM diagnosis and treatment center construction project. The directly affiliated hospitals have a total of 12 national clinical key specialties, 25 key specialties of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and 14 key disciplines of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Give full play to the advantages of traditional Chinese medicine, demonstrate responsibility in epidemic prevention and control, implement the instructions of the provincial party committee, prescribe 2 Chinese medicine prevention prescriptions, distribute more than 6.4 million prescriptions to the whole province, send 47 experts to 14 cities and prefectures to guide the epidemic treatment work, send 153 medical staff to Hubei, and win 5 national and provincial collective awards and 25 individual awards for anti-epidemic work.

The school adheres to the concept of open education, and the level of foreign exchanges and cooperation has been comprehensively improved. There are 313 international students, and students are spread across 25 countries and regions in the world. Foreign exchanges and cooperation are constantly expanding. The first contact point in the field of Chinese health in the EU Framework Program has been successfully established in our school. Based on this, we have built the "China-Luxembourg Cooperation Research Center for Traditional Chinese Medicine"; jointly established the "China-Pakistan Ethnic Medicine Research Center" with the University of Karachi in Pakistan; and carried out the province's first overseas undergraduate cooperative education project with Lincoln University in Malaysia; established long-term cooperative exchange relations with more than 20 universities in countries and regions such as the United States and Australia; opened international traditional Chinese medicine medical centers in Luxembourg, Russia, and Zimbabwe, and established the Dubai Branch of the First Affiliated Hospital of Hunan University of Chinese Medicine in Dubai. Successfully approved the 2017, 2018, and 2019 Hanban tour projects, and carried out tour activities in eight countries including Finland, Estonia, Norway, Namibia, Nigeria, Liberia, the Philippines, and Malaysia. It has successively won the titles of "National Key Education Exchange Project University with Hong Kong" and "National Key Exchange Project University with Taiwan".
