Changsha Aviation Vocational and Technical College was founded in 1973 and upgraded to a higher vocational college in 1998. It is affiliated to the Air Force Equipment Department and is the only general college of national education in the entire army. It is a high-level higher vocational school and professional group construction unit with Chinese characteristics, a national high-quality junior college, an excellent higher vocational college in Hunan Province, and a military-oriented college for training non-commissioned officers. It is mainly responsible for training oriented non-commissioned officers for the army and cultivating high-quality technical and skilled talents for military aviation equipment repair and local aviation industry.

The college currently has two campuses, Tiaoma and Guitang, covering an area of ​​1,000 acres, a building area of ​​300,000 square meters, fixed assets of 700 million yuan, teaching equipment with a total value of 188 million yuan, and a library with more than 730,000 books. It has 8 teaching colleges and departments, including the School of Marxism, Aviation Electromechanical Equipment Maintenance, Avionics Equipment Maintenance, Aviation Machinery Manufacturing, Aviation Service and Management, Basic Education, NCO College, and Physical Education (Teaching) Department. It offers 22 majors, including aircraft maintenance technology, aircraft manufacturing technology, aircraft electronic equipment maintenance, and flight attendants. It has 1 national-level demonstrative vocational education group, 4 backbone majors, 3 vocational education demonstration majors, 3 teaching resource libraries, 1 "dual-qualified" teacher training base, 1 vocational education demonstration virtual simulation training base, and more than 50 provincial-level first-class specialty groups, training bases, boutique online open courses, and famous teachers' space classrooms. It has built the Hunan Aviation Museum, which integrates patriotism education, national defense education, and aviation science education.

The first national aviation vocational education and technology collaborative innovation center (Aviation Engineering Vocational Education Group), the National Aviation Industry Aircraft Maintenance Technology Professional Teaching Steering Committee, the National Aviation Industry Aviation Culture Education Special Steering Committee, the Hunan Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Technology Research Center, the Hunan Missile Maintenance Engineering Technology Research Center, the Hunan College Ideological and Political Work Innovation and Development Center, the Hunan Ideological and Political Work Research Base, the Hunan Higher Vocational College "Double First-Class" Construction Research Base, the Hunan "14th Five-Year Plan" Education Science Research Key Cultivation Base, the Hunan General Aviation Association, the Air Force Aviation Repair System Education and Training Center, and the Practitioner Qualification Assessment and Certification Center are located in the college.

The college currently has more than 10,000 full-time higher vocational students (including more than 5,000 non-commissioned officers), and the average annual vocational training exceeds 200,000 people per day.
