Hunan University of Science and Technology originated from the Xiangbei Construction College on the eve of liberation. It was formed in 2003 by the merger of Xiangtan Institute of Technology and Xiangtan Normal University. It is a university jointly built by the People's Government of Hunan Province and the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, a university jointly built by the People's Government of Hunan Province and the former State Administration of Work Safety, a university supported by the "13th Five-Year Plan" National 100 Central and Western Universities Basic Capacity Construction Project, and a "domestic first-class university construction university" in Hunan Province.

The school covers an area of ​​3004.67 acres, with a construction area of ​​1.1036 million square meters, a total value of 623 million yuan for teaching and scientific research equipment, and a total of more than 7.2 million paper and electronic documents. It has 20 teaching colleges and continuing education colleges, international education colleges and Xiaoxiang College (independent college), and 98 undergraduate majors covering 11 disciplines. Three disciplines, namely engineering, chemistry and computer science, are ranked in the top 1% of the ESI global ranking. The university has three first-level postdoctoral research stations, eight first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 30 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, 17 professional master's degree authorization categories, and the recommendation qualification for excellent fresh undergraduate graduates to study for a master's degree without examination and the qualification for recommendation for the "Master Teacher Program". The university has three national defense specialty disciplines, one provincial advantage specialty key discipline, eight provincial key disciplines, and six Hunan "Double First-Class" construction disciplines. The university has 14 national first-class professional construction sites, eight national specialty majors, 35 provincial first-class professional construction sites, 17 provincial specialty majors, and one national professional comprehensive reform pilot major.

The university currently has 2,566 faculty and staff, including 1,635 full-time teachers, 328 senior professional titles, and 1,022 doctoral degree teachers. The school is an "excellent" university in the evaluation of undergraduate teaching work of the Ministry of Education, a university in the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" of the Ministry of Education, the first batch of universities with typical experience in innovation and entrepreneurship in the country, and a university with typical experience in graduate employment in the country. The first batch of undergraduate admissions covers the whole country. The school has 38 national, provincial and ministerial science and technology innovation platforms for natural sciences and 12 provincial social science research bases. Since the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan", it has undertaken nearly 800 national plan projects such as the "863 Plan", the "973 Plan", national key research and development projects, the National Natural Science Foundation projects, and the National Social Science Foundation projects. It has won 155 national and provincial and ministerial scientific research achievement awards, 2,517 national authorized patents, software copyrights, etc., and promoted 136 new technologies. "Journal of Hunan University of Science and Technology (Natural Science Edition)" and "Journal of Hunan University of Science and Technology (Social Science Edition)" are both included in the overview of Chinese core journals. "Journal of Hunan University of Science and Technology (Social Science Edition)" is selected as a CSSCI source journal, a core journal of Chinese humanities and social sciences, a top 100 social science journal of national universities, and a famous social science journal of national universities. The "Manatee II" submarine large-hole deep pressure-maintaining coring drilling rig system, developed by the school, has set a new record for the world's deep-sea submarine drilling depth, indicating that my country has reached the world's leading level in this field of technology.

The school has established good cooperative relations with nearly 40 universities in more than 10 countries and regions including the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, Australia, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Austria, Ireland, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Macau, and has recruited international students from more than 20 countries and exchange students from Taiwan to study at the school.
