Hunan Transportation Vocational and Technical College, formerly known as Hunan Transportation School, was founded in 1956. In 1999, Hunan Transportation School merged with Hunan Transportation Cadre School. In 2001, Hunan Transportation Vocational and Technical College was established with the approval of the Hunan Provincial People's Government. Hunan Highway Technical School and Hunan Transportation Senior Technical School were successively merged. It is a national demonstrative higher vocational college directly under the Hunan Provincial Department of Transportation, a national high-quality junior college higher vocational and technical college, and the first batch of excellent colleges in Hunan Province. The project construction unit was selected as a high-level professional group construction unit of the national "Double High Plan" in 2019.

The college now covers an area of ​​728 mu, with a building area of ​​294,900 square meters, various teaching instruments and equipment with a total value of 137.465 million yuan, a collection of more than 970,000 books, more than 13,000 full-time students, 531 full-time teachers, 290 senior professional titles, 1 national model teacher, 1 famous teacher of the Ministry of Transport, 3 national transportation technical experts, 2 provincial 121 innovative talents, 1 Furong teaching teacher, 1 provincial technical expert, 29 provincial and ministerial professional leaders, and 17 provincial young backbone teachers. The proportion of "dual-qualified" teachers among full-time professional teachers reached 85.7%.

The college connects with the transportation industry chain of "transportation infrastructure construction-transportation vehicle application-intelligent transportation platform-transportation service". According to the principle of "common professional foundation, similar technical field, related occupations, and shared teaching resources", it builds four transportation specialty groups of transportation civil engineering technology, automobile technical service, intelligent transportation technology, and transportation service, and two other specialty specialty groups of engineering machinery application technology and construction engineering technology. In the future, it will also build a water transport engineering specialty group in due course. The college currently has 31 majors, all of which are included in the specialty group. It has created 4 majors that are key supported by the central government, 3 demonstration specialty specialty groups of the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Education, 3 provincial demonstration specialty specialty groups, 6 provincial boutique construction majors, 2 provincial demonstration specialty majors, and 2 provincial specialty majors. It has 2 training bases supported by the central government and 4 provincial training bases.

The college adopts different talent training models according to the talent training characteristics of different major categories: it innovates the training model of "autumn goes and spring comes, work and study alternately"; implements the "five-in-one" training model of "joint consultation on training plan, joint use of educational resources, joint monitoring of teaching quality, joint participation in student management, and joint tracking of student employment", and cooperates with German Audi, BMW, Daimler, Porsche and Volkswagen brands to successfully introduce corporate training courses and the German "dual system" teaching method; it has formed a modular curriculum structure guided by the operation process of professional positions, and constructed a work-study combined curriculum system that integrates quality training, theoretical knowledge, professional ability, work practice, and vocational training. It has promoted the "department-enterprise integration" professional construction model with distinctive industry characteristics, and has opened school-run enterprises such as Hunan Jiaotong Institute Testing and Inspection Co., Ltd. and Jinshun Engineering Supervision Consulting Co., Ltd., realizing the "department-enterprise integration" of curriculum construction, "department-enterprise integration" of teaching teams, and "department-enterprise integration" of practical training platforms. The college has successively cooperated with more than 200 large and medium-sized brand enterprises at home and abroad, such as Sany Heavy Industry, Zoomlion Heavy Industry, Toyota, Dongfeng Nissan, and Hunan Road and Bridge. Order students cover most majors, accounting for as much as 1/2 of the total number of students, which has achieved that students have jobs after graduation, enterprises have talents for development, and the college has students for school operation. In the past three years, the employment rate of graduates has been above 92%, and the employment rate of "order" majors has been 100%. Only when the export is smooth can the import be prosperous. In recent years, the college's admissions line for liberal arts and science has ranked among the top higher vocational colleges in the province, and has been rated as an advanced unit for "enrollment of higher vocational colleges" by the Hunan Provincial Education Examination Institute many times.

The college insists on both academic education and vocational training, and actively performs social service functions. The college is a national transportation cadre training base, a vocational training base for the Hunan transportation industry, a national transportation teaching committee higher vocational college teacher training base, a vocational education and skills training base for retired soldiers in Hunan Province, and a transportation industry vocational skills appraisal and technical service center. In 2018 alone, the vertical scientific research funds received and the technical service funds received reached more than 20 million yuan, and various social training and skills appraisal certifications were carried out for the transportation industry and Hunan region, totaling 61,348 people. In the past three years, the college has been stable in the top 4 of the top 20 service contributions of higher vocational colleges in Hunan Province.
