Nanhua University Hengyang Medical College is located in Hengyang, a sub-central city of Hunan Province with a long history and rich culture. The college was established in 1956. Under the leadership of Comrade Hua Guofeng, deputy director of the preparatory committee and with the full support of Hunan Medical College, it officially enrolled undergraduate medical students in 1958. In 2000, Hengyang Medical College and Central South Institute of Technology merged to form Nanhua University. Nanhua University is a comprehensive university jointly established by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the National Health Commission, the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, China National Nuclear Corporation and the People's Government of Hunan Province. In 2018, Nanhua University resumed the establishment of Hengyang Medical College. Hengyang Medical College and its affiliated hospital are the only medical school and affiliated hospital of a local comprehensive university jointly established by the National Health Commission and the People's Government of Hunan Province.

The college has four administrative departments at the director level, namely, the General Office/Student Affairs Office, the Talent Training Office, the Hospital Management Office and the Scientific Research and Discipline Construction Office. Its constituent units include the School of Basic Medicine, the School of Pharmacy, the School of Public Health, the School of Nursing, the First Affiliated Hospital (First Clinical School), the Second Affiliated Hospital (Second Clinical School), the Affiliated Nanhua Hospital (Nanhua Clinical School), the Affiliated Changsha Central Hospital (Changsha Central Hospital Clinical School), the Affiliated Third Hospital (Third Clinical School), the Affiliated Public Health Hospital and 11 collaborative affiliated hospitals (all of which are Class III comprehensive hospitals). The college has one first-level discipline postdoctoral research mobile station (basic medicine), two first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points (basic medicine and clinical medicine), six first-level discipline master's degree authorization points (basic medicine, clinical medicine, biology, pharmacy, public health and preventive medicine, and nursing), four types of master's professional degree authorization categories (clinical medicine, pharmacy, master of public health, and nursing), and 11 undergraduate majors in medicine, forming a complete medical talent training system. It recruits international students at the undergraduate, master's and doctoral levels, and has the qualification to recommend outstanding undergraduate graduates to pursue a master's degree without examination and the qualification to enroll in a master-doctorate program. There are 7,509 full-time undergraduates, 5,466 doctoral and master's students, and 372 international students (including 46 doctoral and master's students).

The college currently has more than 390 basic teachers, more than 1,200 clinical teachers in affiliated hospitals, more than 500 professors, chief physicians and other senior professional titles, and more than 400 teachers with doctoral degrees; there are 5 ministerial and provincial innovation teams, provincial university science and technology innovation teams, and provincial teaching teams; there are more than 40 overseas high-level talent program candidates, Changjiang Scholars Distinguished Professors, National Outstanding Youth Fund winners, National High-level Talent Special Support Program Experts, National Major Project Chief Scientists, Ministry of Education New Century Excellent Talent Support Program Selected, Experts Enjoying Special Government Allowances from the State Council, and more than 140 provincial and ministerial academic leaders, high-level health talents, and famous teachers.

The college has 6 national first-class majors (clinical medicine, nursing, preventive medicine, health inspection and quarantine, pharmacy, biotechnology), 2 national first-class specialty majors (clinical medicine, preventive medicine), 3 provincial first-class majors (anesthesiology, medical imaging, medical laboratory technology), clinical medicine and nursing majors have passed the professional certification of the Ministry of Education; 4 national first-class courses, 19 provincial first-class courses, 29 national boutique/resource sharing courses and provincial boutique (online open) courses; it has a national virtual simulation experiment center, an off-campus practice education base, a clinical teaching and training demonstration center, a standardized training base for resident doctors and specialist doctors, and a Hunan Basic Medicine (Pharmacy) Outstanding Student Training Base. Three "Excellent Doctor Education and Training Programs" were approved by the Ministry of Education. 36 teaching achievements have been achieved, including 2 national excellent teaching achievement awards and second prizes, and 4 provincial first prizes.

The college is a national demonstration base for cultivating innovative talents in nuclear medicine, a base for the innovation and introduction of higher education disciplines, a core member unit of the National and Local Joint Engineering Laboratory for Vascular Implant Development, and a core unit member of the National Metabolic Disease Clinical Medicine Research Center. It undertakes the National Difficult Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Capacity Improvement Project (Cardiovascular), the Greater Southern Hunan Regional Medical and Health Center, and the Hunan Major Epidemic Treatment Base Construction Project. It is a national nuclear emergency medical rescue team. It has 5 Hunan Provincial Key Laboratories, 4 Hunan Provincial University Key Laboratories, 5 Hunan Provincial Clinical Medicine Research Centers, as well as provincial scientific research platforms such as the Hunan Provincial Collaborative Innovation Center, the Hunan Provincial Medical Research Center, and the Hunan Provincial Clinical Medicine Demonstration Base. It is an affiliated unit of the Chinese Chapter of the International Atherosclerosis Society, the chairman unit of the Asian Mycoplasma Organization (AOM), and the chairman unit of the Atherosclerosis Professional Committee of the Chinese Society of Pathophysiology. It has undertaken more than 1,300 provincial and ministerial projects and obtained 108 provincial and ministerial scientific and technological achievements, including 35 provincial and ministerial first and second prizes. Clinical medicine has entered the top 1% of the ESI global discipline rankings. Basic medicine has been selected as a first-class domestic cultivation discipline in Hunan Province.

Over the past 60 years, the college has provided more than 80,000 medical alumni (including adult education) and technical backbones in the health and health industries to the country and local areas, and many outstanding alumni represented by Zeng Yixin, Yu Yanhong, Chen Guoqiang, Liu Zuguo, Ran Pixin, etc. have emerged. It has made positive contributions to national construction and development, social civilization and progress, local economic construction and social development.
