Hainan Medical College

Hainan Medical College is the only public medical college in Hainan Free Trade Port. Its predecessor was Haiqiang Medical Technology School founded in 1947 and the private Hainan University Medical College founded in 1948. Over the past 70 years, it has trained more than 70,000 high-quality medical and health talents for the country. It is one of the first batch of pilot universities for the National Excellent Doctor Education and Training Program, the first batch of undergraduate colleges for the comprehensive reform of the Ministry of Education, the construction unit of Hainan Province's characteristic high-level universities, the leading unit of the National Emergency Medical Rescue Team (Hainan), the National Water Emergency Education and Training Base, and the National Maritime Emergency Medical Rescue Base. It is a doctoral degree awarding unit.

The school is located in Haikou, the capital of Hainan Province, a tropical coastal city known as the "Coconut City". It currently has two campuses. The Chengxi Campus is located in Longhua District, Haikou City, and the Guilinyang Campus (under construction) is located in Jiangdong New District, Haikou City. There are 20 teaching institutions, forming a comprehensive and multi-level talent training system from junior college students to undergraduates, master's students, doctoral students, from full-time to adult education, international student education, and continuing education. There are currently 14,577 full-time students, including 58 doctoral students, 1,104 master's students, 10,351 undergraduates, and 722 international students.

The school offers 30 undergraduate majors in four disciplines, including medicine, science, management, and engineering. It has 4 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 2 national characteristic majors, 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center, and 1 national clinical teaching and training demonstration center. Clinical medicine is the first ESI top 1% discipline in Hainan, and pharmacy and clinical medicine have passed the professional certification of the Ministry of Education. It has 8 national key clinical specialties and 7 first-class disciplines in Hainan Province. It currently has a doctoral degree authorization point in clinical medicine, 5 master's degree authorization points in basic medicine, clinical medicine, pharmacy, traditional Chinese medicine, biology, and 5 professional master's degree authorization points in clinical medicine, public health, nursing, pharmacy, and stomatology. In 2005, it passed the undergraduate teaching work level assessment of ordinary colleges and universities with a "good" score, and passed the undergraduate teaching work review and assessment of ordinary colleges and universities in 2017.

The school has a team of high-quality teachers, with 1,182 full-time teachers, 850 people with senior professional and technical positions, 181 professors, and 43.49% of them have doctoral degrees. It has 8 academician workstations, 9 academicians of the two academies have been flexibly introduced, 4 "Yangtze River Scholars" have been introduced, 7 national candidates for the "Million Talents Project", 3 national outstanding teachers, 1 national famous teacher of Chinese medicine colleges and universities, 28 State Council special allowance experts, 4 people selected for the "New Century Excellent Talent Support Program" of the Ministry of Education, and 7 high-level outstanding talents in Hainan Province.

The school takes tropical medicine as its school-running feature, has formed a stable tropical medicine research direction, and has built a tropical medicine system of "three-in-one" teaching, scientific research, and clinical practice. It has established two key laboratories of the Ministry of Education for tropical translational medicine and emergency and trauma research and one key laboratory for tropical disease prevention and control of the National Health Commission. It hosts "Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine" and "Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine", which are the only two all-English international tropical medicine journals included in SCI in China, ranking 16th and 17th in the global SCI tropical medicine journals. It hosts "One Health Bulletin", which is the first international academic journal in the field of all health in China.

The school has 101 teaching practice and internship bases. The three tertiary-level A-class general hospitals, including the Affiliated Hainan Hospital, the First Affiliated Hospital, and the Second Affiliated Hospital, are directly affiliated hospitals. The Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine is the Clinical School of Traditional Chinese Medicine of Hainan Medical College. There are also 8 non-directly affiliated hospitals and 12 teaching hospitals, which provide strong guarantees for clinical teaching.

The school insists on open education and has established cooperative relations with well-known domestic and foreign universities such as the University of Nebraska, the University of Basel, Switzerland, Mahidol University, Thailand, the University of Hong Kong, Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine, and Nanjing Medical University; jointly established the "International Research Center for Aging and Tumors" with the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation in the United States and the Ruijin Hospital Affiliated to the School of Medicine of Shanghai Jiaotong University; jointly applied for the establishment of the West of England College of Hainan Medical College, a Sino-foreign cooperative institution, with the University of the West of England in the United Kingdom; initiated the establishment of the "Belt and Road" Tropical Medicine Alliance composed of 122 colleges and universities and scientific research institutions in 30 countries and regions, and has successfully held three International Tropical Medicine Summit Forums.

The school promotes the spirit of "unremitting self-improvement, unity and progress, and hard work", adheres to the school motto of "virtue, rigor, erudition and harmony", establishes the educational thought of cultivating "red doctors", and founded the first college graduate entrepreneurship incubation base in Hainan Province. Students won the first prize in the undergraduate group of the Higher Education Cup National College Student Mathematical Modeling Competition, the first National Medical College Pharmacy and Traditional Chinese Medicine Experimental Teaching Reform Competition and many other national awards, and won the "National Advanced Collective for Graduate Employment of Ordinary Colleges and Universities" and "National Advanced Unit for Entrepreneurship Education Research and Practice in Colleges and Universities" and many other honors.

At present, the school is taking the service of the construction of Hainan Free Trade Port as its own responsibility, adhering to the high-quality connotation-oriented characteristic development path, striving to build a high-level international medical university with distinctive tropical characteristics, and making greater contributions to the implementation of the Healthy China strategy.
