Chengdu University of Technology was founded on March 15, 1956, and was originally named Chengdu Institute of Geological Exploration. In the early days of the school, the Ministry of Higher Education and the Ministry of Geology jointly issued a document to establish the Chengdu Institute of Geological Exploration based on the Department of Geology of Chongqing University, the engineering part of the Department of Geology of Northwest University and Nanjing University, and at the same time transferred some cadres and teachers from Beijing Institute of Geology and Northeast Institute of Geology. After the establishment of the school, the former Petroleum Department, part of the Second Department, and the entire Third Department of the Beijing Institute of Geology moved in successively. Chengdu Institute of Geological Exploration was renamed Chengdu Institute of Geology in 1958. Chengdu Institute of Geology was renamed Chengdu Institute of Technology in 1993. In 2001, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Sichuan Commercial College and Nonferrous Metal Geology Staff University were merged to form Chengdu University of Technology. The university was directly under the Ministry of Geology, the Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resources, and the Ministry of Land and Resources. In 2000, it was transferred to the local government and became a provincial key university jointly built by the central and local governments and mainly managed by the Sichuan Provincial People's Government. On November 3, 2010, the Ministry of Land and Resources and the Sichuan Provincial People's Government signed an agreement to jointly build Chengdu University of Technology. In September 2017, the university entered the ranks of national first-class discipline construction universities. On December 26, 2019, our school became a "double first-class" construction university jointly built by the Ministry of Education and Sichuan Province.

The school began to recruit undergraduates in the year of its establishment, and began to recruit graduate students in 1960. In 1981, it became the first university to obtain the right to confer master's degrees after the restoration of the degree system in the country, and obtained the right to confer doctoral degrees in 1984. After 65 years of construction and development, the school has become a multidisciplinary university with science and engineering as its main disciplines, geology, energy, resource science, nuclear technology, and environmental science as its advantages, and chemical engineering, materials, electronics, machinery, information science, management science and other disciplines as its characteristics. It has the right to confer bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, and the right to approve the qualifications of professors and doctoral supervisors. In the long-term practice of running schools, the school has formed the fine tradition of "hard work and striving for progress", the enterprising spirit of "not willing to lag behind and dare to be the first", and the school motto of "exhausting theory and achieving success in engineering".

The school has two campuses in Chengdu and Yibin. The school headquarters is located in the main urban area of ​​Chengdu, with a superior geographical location, covering an area of ​​2,887 acres and a school building area of ​​970,000 square meters. The Yibin campus is located in Sanjiang New District, Yibin City, surrounded by mountains and rivers, with a beautiful environment, covering an area of ​​1,000 acres and a planned school building area of ​​430,000 square meters. The school currently has 36,267 full-time students, including 30,392 undergraduates, 5,601 full-time graduate students, and 119 part-time graduate students. The school has a total of 20 teaching colleges, 1 sedimentary geology research institute, and 1 geological survey research institute. There is also 1 independent college (Chengdu University of Technology College of Engineering and Technology).

The school has 74 undergraduate majors, including 15 national first-class majors, 8 national characteristic majors, 4 national comprehensive reform projects, 38 provincial first-class majors, 12 provincial characteristic majors, 13 provincial comprehensive reform pilot projects, 1 provincial "Course Ideology and Politics" demonstration major, and 4 provincial application-oriented demonstration majors; the school is a university of the Ministry of Education's "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program", including 7 national "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" pilot majors (including independent enrollment directions), 19 provincial "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" pilot majors, 1 provincial "Excellent Agricultural and Forestry Talent Education and Training Program" pilot major, 1 provincial "Excellent Legal Talent Education and Training Program" pilot major, and 1 provincial "Excellent Journalism and Communication Talent Education and Training Program" pilot major. The school has 4 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 4 national virtual simulation experimental projects, 3 national engineering practice education centers, and 2 national college students' off-campus practice education bases. It is a national college student innovation and entrepreneurship program implementation school. It has 11 national first-class courses and 114 provincial first-class undergraduate courses.

The school has 7 first-level doctoral degree authorization points and 22 first-level master's degree authorization points. The disciplines cover 10 major disciplines, including science, engineering, literature, management, economics, law, philosophy, agriculture, education, and art. There is 1 first-level national key discipline (geological resources and geological engineering), 3 second-level national key disciplines (geological engineering, mineral survey and exploration, earth exploration and information technology), 1 national key (cultivation) discipline (mineralogy, petrology, ore deposits), 14 provincial key disciplines (applied chemistry, environmental engineering, solid geophysics, geotechnical engineering, paleontology and stratigraphy (including paleoanthropology), signal and information processing, structural geology, geochemistry, oil and gas field development engineering, Quaternary geology, materials science, nuclear technology and application, management science and engineering, mineralogy, petrology, ore deposits), and 1 provincial key (cultivation) discipline (applied mathematics). Two disciplines (earth science and engineering) are among the top 1% of the ESI global rankings, and geology has entered the ranks of national "double first-class" construction disciplines. "Earth Science" and "Environmental Science and Ecology" have entered the ranks of "first-class disciplines" in Sichuan Province.

The school currently has 3,454 faculty and staff, including 338 professors (level) and 729 associate professors (level). Academician Liu Baojun of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was specially appointed as the honorary president. 58 high-end experts (academicians) were introduced flexibly. As of March 2021, 152 people have been awarded national talent titles and national talent plans, including 5 "National Outstanding Youth Fund Winners", 5 "National Young and Middle-aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions", 3 "Members of the State Council Discipline Evaluation Group", and 5 "China Youth Science and Technology Award"; 447 people have been awarded provincial talent titles and selected for provincial talent plans, including 100 academic and technical leaders in Sichuan Province; 3 national outstanding teachers, 1 national teaching master, 7 Sichuan teaching masters, 3 Sichuan outstanding teachers, 3 Sichuan teaching masters, 1 Sichuan outstanding educator, and 1 Sichuan teacher ethics model; there is 1 national teaching team, 6 Sichuan teaching teams, and 1 Sichuan "Course Ideology and Politics" demonstration teaching team; 5 national teaching achievement awards have been won.

The school is an important national base for high-level talent training and scientific research. It currently has 2 national key laboratories (the National Key Laboratory of Geological Hazard Prevention and Geoenvironment Protection, the National Key Laboratory of Oil and Gas Reservoir Geology and Development Engineering), 1 key laboratory of the Ministry of Education, 1 Ministry of Education Higher Education Discipline Innovation and Talent Introduction Base, 2 key laboratories of the Ministry of Natural Resources, 1 National Key Laboratory of Environmental Protection, 2 field scientific observation and research bases of the Ministry of Natural Resources, 1 Sichuan New Think Tank, 1 China Think Tank Index (CTTI) source think tank, 3 Sichuan Key Laboratories, 1 Sichuan Engineering Research Center, 1 Sichuan Engineering Laboratory, 1 Sichuan International Science and Technology Cooperation Base, 2 Sichuan Key Research Bases for Philosophy and Social Sciences, 2 Sichuan Social Science Popularization Bases, 1 Sichuan University Key Laboratory, 1 Sichuan Provincial Department of Ecology and Environment Key Laboratory, 6 postdoctoral research mobile stations and 1 Sichuan Postdoctoral Innovation Practice Base, and 3 "Sichuan 2011 Collaborative Innovation Centers" led by our school. The school has 1 National Natural Science Foundation innovation group, 1 "Yangtze River Scholars and Innovation Team Development Program" team of the Ministry of Education, 12 Sichuan Provincial Science and Technology Innovation Teams, 16 Sichuan Provincial Department of Education Science and Technology Innovation Teams, and 1 Sichuan Provincial Social Science High-level Research Team.

The school has successively undertaken a large number of important projects such as the National Major R&D Program, the National Major Science and Technology Special Project, the National Science and Technology Support Program, the National Natural Science Foundation, the National "863" Program, the National "973" Program, the National Social Science Fund, and the National Geological Survey Program. As of 2020, the school has won a total of 954 awards (times) including national and provincial and ministerial science and technology awards, including 1 National Science and Technology Progress Special Award, 4 National Science and Technology Progress First Prizes, 1 China International Science and Technology Cooperation Award, 1 National Natural Science Second Prize, 9 National Science and Technology Progress Second Prizes, 1 China Patent Gold Award, and 9 National Technology Inventions and National Science and Technology Progress Third Prizes; nearly 926 provincial government awards and social force awards (times); more than 1,920 authorized patents. The school takes serving the development and construction of the country, industry and locality as its own responsibility, and actively participates in the construction of projects such as West-to-East Power Transmission, West-to-East Gas Transmission, South-to-North Water Diversion, Sichuan-Tibet Railway, oil and gas geological exploration, energy development, large-scale hydropower, regional and urban environment, and large-scale transportation infrastructure.

The school has a national college student cultural quality education base, a national intangible cultural heritage Sichuan opera transmission and display base, and a school-level public art education center, etc., and actively organizes students to participate in various scientific and cultural activities at all levels. The school won 8 first prizes in the exhibition category of Sichuan University Student Art Festival, and won the Excellent Organization Award of Sichuan University Student Art Festival for 3 consecutive sessions. The school has won the National College Student Volunteer Summer "Three Going to the Countryside" Social Practice Activity Outstanding Unit 10 times, and won the National Western Plan Outstanding Project 4 times. The series of summer social practice activities for college students have been commended 15 times by the Central Propaganda Department and the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League. In the China International "Internet +" College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, it won 3 national silver medals, 10 national bronze medals, and 26 provincial gold medals. In the past three "Challenge Cup" national college students' extracurricular science and technology works competitions, it won 5 national second prizes, 1 third prize, and 26 provincial first prizes; in the "Chuang Qingchun" college students' entrepreneurship plan competition, it won 1 national silver medal and 13 provincial first prizes; in various college sports events, it won 133 national awards (times) and 264 provincial awards (times); in various college art competitions at the national, provincial and municipal levels, it won 728 awards (times).

The school has a natural museum with a high reputation in the west and even the whole country, mainly for geological collections, with more than 60,000 specimens of paleontology, rocks, minerals, minerals, gems and ornamental stones. Now it has jointly built the Chengdu University of Technology Museum with Chengdu City on the campus. There are 3 libraries with 2.576 million printed books and periodicals, 90 digital resource databases, 2.597 million electronic books, and 48,000 electronic journals. It has formed a multi-disciplinary document resource guarantee system with advantages in subject document resources such as geology, energy, and environment, and features in science and engineering document resources. The school archives are managed in a standardized manner and have reached the "national first-level archive management standard for scientific and technological institutions". The school sponsors and publishes 6 academic journals, including 2 Peking University Chinese core journals and 2 CSCD core journals.

The school attaches great importance to foreign exchanges and cooperation. It has established long-term industry-university-research cooperation relations with large national enterprises and scientific research institutes in the fields of resources, energy, environment, construction, military industry and high-tech. It has established exchange and cooperation relations with more than 60 universities and scientific research institutions in the United Kingdom, Canada, Russia, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Italy and other countries. It currently holds 4 Sino-foreign cooperative education projects with Staffordshire University and Oxford Brookes University in the United Kingdom. In 2019, the Ministry of Education approved the establishment of Oxford Brookes College, Chengdu University of Technology, a Sino-foreign cooperatively-run school. More than 2,800 foreign experts and students from more than 40 countries and regions have been received to give lectures and study abroad, more than 700 people have visited, more than 300 scientific research cooperation projects have been carried out, and international academic conferences have been hosted many times.

The school has been awarded the honorary title of "Advanced Collective for Employment of Graduates in Sichuan Province" and was selected as one of the top 50 universities with typical experience in graduate employment in 2011-2012. In 2016, the school was approved as the Sichuan Provincial Innovation and Entrepreneurship Demonstration Club and the Sichuan Provincial Demonstration University for Deepening Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Reform. In 2017, the school was rated as a national-level demonstration university for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform. In 2018, the school was selected as one of the top 50 universities with typical experience in innovation and entrepreneurship in 2018.

The school has trained nearly 210,000 outstanding talents for the society so far. Among them, a group of scholars and experts with certain reputation at home and abroad have emerged, including 4 academicians of the two academies (Academician Liu Baojun, Academician Duoji, Academician Wang Chengshan, and Academician Cui Peng). A large number of graduates have made important contributions to my country's economic construction and social development in central and local governments, departments, land resources, exploration, geology, petroleum (energy) and other industries, and their outstanding performance has been widely recognized by the society.

At present, the school is guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, under the leadership of the Sichuan Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial Government, on the platform of jointly promoting the construction of "Double First-Class" by the ministry, province, city, and school, we work together, forge ahead, and strive to build a high-level university with more significant advantages and characteristics!
