Southwest University of Science and Technology is located in Mianyang City, Sichuan Province, China's Science and Technology City. The school is a university jointly built by the Sichuan Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Education, and jointly built by the Sichuan Provincial People's Government and the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense. It has been identified by the Ministry of Education as one of the 14 key universities in the western region of China. Comrade Li Lanqing, former member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council, praised the school's "co-construction and regional industry-university-research joint school-running" for taking a unique approach to running schools. The current party secretary and president of the school is Dong Faqin.

Southwest University of Science and Technology originated from the Chongqing First Civil Engineering School and Southwest Architectural Engineering School founded in 1952, as well as the Chongqing Architectural Engineering School established by the merger of the two schools. The school was once run in Chongqing, Shimian and Mianyang. In 1978, Sichuan Building Materials Industry College moved to the former campus of Tsinghua University Mianyang Branch, and some employees and educational resources of Tsinghua University Mianyang Branch were incorporated into the college. In 1993, it was renamed Southwest Institute of Technology. In 2000, the former Southwest Institute of Technology and Mianyang Economic and Technical College merged to form Southwest University of Science and Technology. The school campus now covers an area of ​​5,463 acres, with a beautiful environment and complete facilities. It is a good place for studying and studying. The school currently has a construction area of ​​1.19 million square meters, a total fixed asset value of 2.7 billion yuan, and a teaching and scientific research equipment value of 887 million yuan. The school library has a construction area of ​​37,800 square meters, with more than 2.53 million paper books and more than 7.56 million electronic books.

The school currently has more than 39,000 graduate students, ordinary undergraduate and junior college students, and foreign students. There are 16 colleges (departments) including the National Academy of Defense Technology, with 83 undergraduate majors in 9 major disciplines including engineering, agriculture, science, economics, law, literature, management, education, and art; there are 5 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 18 second-level doctoral degree authorization points; 24 first-level master's degree authorization points, 88 second-level master's degree authorization points; 15 master's professional degree categories. There is 1 postdoctoral research mobile station, and 4 disciplines are jointly trained with the China Academy of Engineering Physics and other institutions for doctoral students. There are 2 "Double First-Class" construction disciplines (groups) in Sichuan Province, 4 provincial advantageous disciplines, 11 provincial key disciplines, 1 national defense basic discipline approved by the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, and 5 national defense characteristic disciplines. Three disciplines, materials science, engineering science, and chemistry, are in the top 1% of the ESI ranking, of which materials science and engineering science are in the top 5‰ of the ESI ranking.

The school currently has more than 2,690 faculty and staff, including 324 senior professional titles and 629 associate senior professional titles; 875 doctoral and master's supervisors; 15 academicians appointed from board units, etc.; there are national candidates for the "Million Talents Project", "Changjiang Scholars Award Program" youth projects, winners of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, "Ministry of Education New Century Talent Program" candidates, experts enjoying special government allowances from the State Council, outstanding experts with outstanding contributions in Sichuan Province, academic and technical leaders and reserve candidates in Sichuan Province, and famous teachers in Sichuan Province, etc. There are more than 200 people. The school has 32 national and provincial first-class courses such as optoelectronic technology, hydraulic and pneumatic transmission, and practical teaching of ideological and political theory courses. It offers more than 3,000 courses of various types to undergraduates and graduate students each year. There are 8 national and provincial university teaching teams such as electronic technology and innovation and chemical experimental teaching, and 7 national outstanding talent education and training program majors such as mechanical design, manufacturing and automation. In the 2012-2020 National General College Teacher Competition Status Data Ranking announced by the China Higher Education Society in 2021, Southwest University of Science and Technology ranked 44th in the country (2nd among Sichuan provincial universities). There are 6 national characteristic professional construction sites such as materials science and engineering, automation, and environmental engineering. The major of electronic information engineering is a key national defense major, and the major of radiation protection and nuclear safety is a national defense shortage major. There are 28 national and Sichuan first-class majors. 7 majors such as civil engineering have passed the national engineering education professional certification (assessment). There are 2 national and 12 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers and virtual simulation experimental teaching centers. The school's innovation and entrepreneurship education has achieved remarkable results. Students have repeatedly won good results in national science, technology, culture, sports competitions and subject competitions such as the "Challenge Cup", "Mathematical Modeling" and "University Entrepreneurship Competition". The school's robot team won the championship and the best technology award of the National College Student Robot Competition, and the runner-up and best technology award in the Asia-Pacific region. The National University Science and Technology Park of Southwest University of Science and Technology has been built into a "national technology transfer demonstration institution", "national science and technology enterprise incubator", "national college student science and technology entrepreneurship internship base", and "Sichuan University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Demonstration Club". The school is one of the designated contact universities for the comprehensive innovation and reform experiment in Sichuan Province. It has jointly established the "Sichuan Military-Civilian Integration Research Institute" to further promote military-civilian integration in the training of national defense science and technology talents, collaborative innovation, technology transfer, and regional high-end think tanks. The research results of the school's Latin American Research Center actively serve the national Latin American strategy and have been fully affirmed by Vice Premier Liu Yandong.
