Sichuan University for Nationalities is a full-time undergraduate university in Sichuan Province and the only national undergraduate university in the Kangba region. It is located in Guza Town, Kangding City, Sichuan Province, between "slippery mountains, white clouds, rushing rivers, and swift winds". The school is nestled in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the roof of the world, at the foot of Mount Gongga, the king of Shu Mountains. It is backed by Kangding, the hometown of world love songs, to the west, overlooking the towering Erlang Mountain to the east, and to the south is Luding, where the Dadu Bridge crosses the iron chain and is cold. It is connected to Danba Beauty Valley and the fairyland-like Jiaju Tibetan Village in the north. The most beautiful scenic avenue of the Republic, Route 318, passes by the campus, and the surging Dadu River flows into the sea day and night from here. The school is beautiful and pleasant, with an average annual temperature of 18℃. It is a provincial-level "garden-style campus".
The school originated from the "Kangding National Normal College" established in 1985. Hu Yaobang, then General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, wrote the Chinese name of the school; in 1986, Erdeni Chokyi Gyaltsen, the 10th Panchen Lama, then Vice Chairman of the National People's Congress, wrote the Tibetan name of the school. In 1992, the school was renamed "Kangding National Normal College". In 2004, Ganzi Agricultural School (formed by the merger of Ganzi Agricultural and Animal Husbandry School and Ganzi Forestry Technical School) and Ganzi Finance School (formed by the merger of Ganzi Finance and Trade School and Ganzi Industrial School) were integrated and merged. In March 2009, it was officially upgraded to Sichuan Nationalities College with the approval of the Ministry of Education. In 2013, it obtained the qualification to confer bachelor's degrees. In 2015, it passed the undergraduate teaching qualification evaluation of the Ministry of Education.
The school currently has 33 undergraduate majors, 14 second bachelor's degree majors, 19 junior college majors and ethnic preparatory education, covering 10 disciplines such as literature, science, engineering, and law; there are more than 10,000 full-time students, including more than 3,000 ethnic minority students, accounting for 33%; there are more than 9,000 adult education students. The current campus area is 625 acres, the school building area is 240,000 square meters, the total value of fixed assets is 624 million yuan, the total value of teaching and scientific research equipment is 97.07 million yuan, the library has a collection of one million paper books and more than 400,000 electronic books. There are more than 800 faculty and staff, including more than 160 senior professional and technical positions, and more than 300 teachers with doctoral and master's degrees. The school has built 133 internship and training bases for various majors, and has test sites for graduate entrance examinations and primary and secondary school teacher qualification examinations.
The school has always adhered to the principle of being based in Kangba, facing Sichuan, building Tibetan-related areas, serving national strategies, and cultivating qualified builders and reliable successors of socialism. Focusing on the goal of building a vibrant modern comprehensive applied ethnic undergraduate university, we will deepen the reform of education and teaching, increase connotation construction, promote transformation and development, highlight ethnicity, locality, and application, and cultivate outstanding talents who are "reliable, down-to-earth, and good at work", and provide intellectual support for the political, economic, social, cultural and ecological construction of ethnic areas. Since its establishment, it has trained more than 40,000 undergraduate and junior college graduates and more than 5,000 Tibetan-Chinese bilingual talents for the society. Among them, nearly 20,000 people have taken root in the grassroots of ethnic areas, imparting modern civilization, safeguarding the unity of the motherland, and promoting national unity. Most of them have become business backbones, and more than 3,000 people have served the people of all ethnic groups in grassroots leadership positions. The school has become the backbone of maintaining political stability in ethnic areas, promoting economic and social development, and inheriting cultural and scientific knowledge. It is an important education base for stabilizing Tibet, building Tibet, and promoting Ankang.
The school is committed to the study of ethnic culture and is devoted to the inheritance of Kangba culture. It has established the Sichuan Provincial Key Social Science Research Base - Kham Culture Research Center and the Provincial Philosophy and Social Science Popularization Base - Kham Culture Social Science Popularization Base. It focuses on the special research of Kham area's intangible cultural heritage, southern Tibetan medicine, Kham biodiversity and other special research areas. It has established 14 special research centers and 14 special research institutes, built the Kham Literature Library and the Tibetan Ancient Books Library, collected and sorted more than 30,000 volumes (letters) of literature and materials in Kham area, and has a complete set of classic scriptures from Derge Printing House, which has laid a solid foundation for the construction of Ganzi Prefecture's Literature and Materials Center and the promotion of in-depth research in Tibetan areas. The school holds academic exchange activities such as the Kham Development Seminar and Kham Culture Science Week every year, edits and publishes the provincial journal "Journal of Sichuan Nationalities University" and the school-level journal "Kham Studies", and has completed more than 600 national, provincial (ministerial), and state-level scientific research projects such as "History of Kham National Culture", "Research on Stability and Development of Ganzi Prefecture", "Research on Bilingual Education in Tibetan Areas of Sichuan", and "Research on Vocational and Technical Education in Tibetan Areas of Sichuan". It has won 20 provincial and ministerial scientific research awards, published more than 200 books, and published more than 5,000 academic papers, forming advantages and characteristics in studying the Kham area.
