Xi'an Jiaotong University

Xi'an Jiaotong University is the earliest famous higher education institution in my country and is well-known both at home and abroad. It is a key university directly under the Ministry of Education.

At the end of the 19th century, the defeat in the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895 put the nation in danger. Sheng Xuanhuai, a famous modern industrialist and educator, adhered to the belief that "self-reliance starts with talent cultivation, and talent cultivation must start with education". He founded the Nanyang Public School in Shanghai in 1896 and named it Jiaotong University in 1921. The school adheres to the school-running purpose of "seeking practical learning and practical industry" and emphasizes the school-running goal of "cultivating first-class character, seeking first-class knowledge, creating first-class careers, and becoming first-class talents". By the 1920s and 1930s, it had become a famous university with unique "science, engineering and management" characteristics, and was known as the "MIT" of the East. During the Anti-Japanese War, the school moved to the concession and moved to Chongqing. It insisted on running schools in Shanghai and Chongqing. In order to resist foreign aggression, many students joined the army and fought bloody battles. On the eve of liberation, teachers and students actively participated in the democratic revolution and liberation struggle, and the school was hailed as a "democratic fortress".

In 1955, the central government decided to move Jiaotong University to Xi'an; from 1956, teachers and students moved to Xi'an in batches; in 1957, it was divided into two parts, Xi'an and Shanghai, of Jiaotong University, and implemented unified leadership; in 1959, the Xi'an part of Jiaotong University was named Xi'an Jiaotong University, and in the same year it was listed as one of the 16 key universities in the country. In 2000, the State Council decided to merge Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an Medical University, and Shaanxi University of Finance and Economics to form a new Xi'an Jiaotong University.

The school is a key construction unit of the "Seventh Five-Year Plan" and "Eighth Five-Year Plan", and the first batch of schools to enter the national "211" and "985" engineering construction. In 2017, it was selected as a Class A construction university in the national "Double First-Class" construction list, and 8 disciplines were selected as first-class construction disciplines.

The school is a comprehensive research university with science and engineering characteristics, covering 9 disciplines including science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, literature, law, philosophy and art. It has 27 colleges (departments, centers), 9 undergraduate colleges and 3 directly affiliated hospitals. There are 6,538 faculty members, including 3,729 full-time teachers. Among the faculty, there are 45 academicians of the two academies, 7 national teaching masters, 49 winners of the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund, 26 experts with outstanding contributions to the country, 31 candidates for the National "Hundred Thousand Talents Project" and "New Century Hundred Thousand Talents Project", 29 leaders of the Ministry of Education's innovation team, 234 selected candidates for the Ministry of Education's "New Century Excellent Talent Training Program", and 481 experts who have made outstanding contributions to the country and enjoy special government subsidies.

There are 48,082 students, including 21,141 undergraduates and 26,941 postgraduates. There are 90 undergraduate majors, 32 first-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degrees, 41 first-level disciplines authorized for master's degrees, 6 doctoral professional degree authorization points, 27 master's professional degree authorization points, 30 postdoctoral mobile stations, 8 national first-level key disciplines, 5 national key laboratories, 7 national engineering (technology) research centers, 3 national engineering laboratories, 5 national international science and technology cooperation bases, 1 2011 collaborative innovation center, and 148 provincial and ministerial key scientific research bases. The National Western Energy Research Institute and the China Western Quality Science and Technology Research Institute have been established.

According to data released by ESI, as of May 2021, 16 disciplines of the school have entered the top 1% of academic institutions in the world, 4 disciplines have entered the top 1‰, and engineering has entered the top 10,000th.

Over the past 120 years since its establishment, the school has formed a fine tradition of promoting learning and strengthening the country, arduous entrepreneurship, respecting morality and being practical, and rigorous scholarship, an excellent character of loving the country, pursuing truth, being diligent and down-to-earth, and being simple and hardworking, and a school-running feature of high starting point, solid foundation, strict requirements, and emphasis on practice. In 2006, the "college system" was implemented, and the "dual-college system" training model of colleges and universities gave students wings to take off. In 2017, the school established the Undergraduate College, implemented the three-level teaching responsibilities of "school-college-department", and established an undergraduate talent training management system of "horizontal collaboration, vertical integration, and coordinated teaching and education". Since the relocation of the school, more than 100 "firsts" in scientific research fields at home and abroad have been created, and Jiaotong University has played a leading role in seizing the commanding heights of scientific research, including the establishment of my country's first Institute of Engineering Thermophysics, the first steam turbine, automobile manufacturing, refrigeration and cryogenics and compressor majors, the development of my country's first large-scale general-purpose electronic computer, the first digital processing chip with independent intellectual property rights, and the first international proposal of the double shear unified strength theory.

Since the relocation of the school, the school has created more than 30,000 scientific research results, of which 241 have won the three national awards, generating hundreds of billions of economic and social benefits. Relying on its advantages in disciplines and talent training, the school has innovated the industry-university-research cooperation model, established R&D centers with the government and large and medium-sized enterprises, focused on solving key technical problems in the industry, and fully exerted the supporting role of science and technology in regional economic and social development.

Since 2000, it has presided over 21 "973 Program" projects and approved 5,832 National Natural Science Foundation projects. The number of basic research projects and funds are among the top universities in the country. The school has undertaken 37 major national research projects in the humanities, won 36 humanities and social science awards from the Ministry of Education, and co-built 17 high-end think tanks with the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Civil Affairs, the Central Compilation and Translation Bureau, etc. A large number of research results have been adopted and applied.

The school has a national college student cultural quality education base and 167 cultural clubs. International exchanges are extensive. Since 2000, the university has invited 25 Nobel Prize and Fields Medal winners and more than 2,000 foreign professors to visit and give lectures. The number of scholars, business executives, and government officials from all over the world who have participated in cooperative research and academic exchanges has reached more than 20,000. More than 28,000 teachers and students have been sent abroad for visits, further studies, research, and degree studies, and more than 2,000 people have participated in international conferences. Inter-school cooperation has been established with more than 320 colleges and universities and research institutions in 44 countries and regions including the United States, Japan, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Singapore, and South Korea.

There are four campuses in Xingqing, Yanta, Qujiang, and China Western Science and Technology Innovation Port, covering an area of ​​about 4,480 acres, with a total area of ​​about 4 million square meters of various buildings. The library was approved by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee as the "Qian Xuesen Library", with a total construction area of ​​43,794 square meters and more than 3,604 reading seats; a total collection of 5.76 million books (items), 10,175 Chinese and foreign newspapers and periodicals, and 1,307 Chinese and foreign current periodicals. It has introduced 132 platforms of electronic resources from home and abroad and about 72 sub-databases; it has more than 59,000 full-text electronic journals in Chinese and foreign languages, and more than 1.759 million electronic books in Chinese and Western languages.

With the goal of "national mission, global science and education highland, service Shaanxi engine, innovation-driven platform, and smart learning town demonstration", the Western China Science and Technology Innovation Port has established 8 platforms, 29 research institutes and more than 300 scientific research bases in 4 fields, which will serve major national scientific research such as interdisciplinary and military-civilian integration, serve the cultivation of students' innovative ability, transfer and incubation of scientific and technological achievements, and economic and social development, and actively explore new models, new forms and new experiences for the integration of modern universities and social development in the 21st century.

The "Silk Road University Alliance" led by the university has attracted more than 150 universities from 37 countries and regions to join, and a number of high-end think tanks and research platforms such as the Reform Pilot Exploration and Evaluation Collaborative Innovation Center and the Silk Road Economic Belt Research Collaborative Innovation Center are committed to serving social development and national rejuvenation.

On December 11, 2017, General Secretary Xi Jinping gave important instructions on the letter from 15 old professors who moved westward from Xi'an Jiaotong University, paying high tribute to the old comrades who responded to the national call and devoted themselves to the construction of the Northwest, hoping to inherit the "spirit of moving westward" and contribute wisdom and strength to the development of the west and national construction.

On April 22, 2020, General Secretary Xi Jinping visited the Xi'an Jiaotong University Westward Museum during his inspection in Shaanxi, met with 14 old professors who moved westward, and delivered two important speeches, profoundly explaining the core and essence of the spirit of moving westward, and encouraging teachers and students to vigorously carry forward the spirit of moving westward, seize the new opportunities of the new era, make achievements in the places where the motherland needs them most, and create historical achievements belonging to our generation on the new journey.
