Xi'an University of Finance and Economics is a general higher education institution sponsored by the Shaanxi Provincial People's Government and co-established by the Shaanxi Provincial People's Government and the National Bureau of Statistics. The predecessor of the school can be traced back to the Northwest Trade School established in 1952. In June 2001, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Shaanxi Institute of Economics and Trade and Xi'an Institute of Statistics merged to form Xi'an Institute of Finance and Economics. On November 30, 2018, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Xi'an Institute of Finance and Economics was renamed Xi'an University of Finance and Economics. The school currently has four campuses: Chang'an, Yanta, Cuihua East, and Cuihua West, covering an area of ​​more than 1,600 acres. Yanta and Cuihua campuses are adjacent to the world-famous Big Wild Goose Pagoda of the Tang Dynasty. The Chang'an campus is located on the Shenheyuan at the northern foot of the Qinling Mountains, with an elegant environment and profound cultural heritage.

The school focuses on economics and management, highlights the advantages and characteristics of disciplines such as statistics, finance, finance, and accounting, and is supported by literature, law, science, engineering, and art, focusing on the coordinated development of multiple disciplines. The school currently has 12 colleges and a physical education department, including the School of Economics, School of Statistics, School of Business, School of Management, School of Information, School of Law, School of Literature, School of Public Administration, School of Foreign Languages, School of Continuing Education, School of International Education, and School of Marxism. There are 1,070 full-time teachers, including 48 national, provincial and ministerial experts, 25 national model teachers, provincial teaching masters, outstanding teachers, advanced workers, model teachers, advanced teachers, and models of teacher ethics in Shaanxi Province.

The school currently has 6 first-level disciplines and 30 second-level disciplines, including applied economics, statistics, business administration, law, public administration, and Marxist theory. The school has 12 professional master's degree authorization points, including Master of Finance, Master of Applied Statistics, Master of Accounting, Master of Business Administration, Master of Engineering, Master of Journalism and Communication, Master of Taxation, Master of Auditing, Master of Law, Master of Chinese International Education, Master of Electronic Information, and Master of Public Administration. The school has 4 provincial-level advantageous disciplines, including statistics, finance, law, and management science and engineering, and 1 provincial-level characteristic discipline, Western Regional Economic and Industrial Development Research. Statistics has been listed as a construction discipline of "domestic first-class discipline construction universities" by Shaanxi Province. The school currently has 47 undergraduate majors, including 4 national-level "first-class undergraduate majors" construction sites, 19 provincial-level "first-class undergraduate majors" construction sites, 2 national-level professional comprehensive reform pilot projects, 10 provincial-level professional comprehensive reform pilot projects, 3 national-level characteristic majors, 6 provincial-level characteristic majors, and 3 provincial-level famous majors. There are 21 provincial-level and above first-class undergraduate courses, and 2 national-level and 3 provincial-level "new engineering, new liberal arts, and new agricultural science" research and reform practice projects have been approved. At present, the school has more than 17,900 full-time students and 46 international students.

The school has always adhered to talent training as the foundation and improving the quality of education and teaching as the center. It won "excellent" in the 2007 Ministry of Education's undergraduate teaching work level evaluation. In the past two sessions, it has won 9 national and provincial teaching achievement awards. There are 5 off-campus practice education bases for college students at or above the provincial level, 7 provincial talent training model innovation experimental zones, 2 pilot colleges for innovation and entrepreneurship education reform in Shaanxi Province, 5 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, and 3 provincial virtual simulation experimental teaching centers.

The school recruits students from 31 provinces (municipalities, autonomous regions) across the country, and candidates apply for the exam enthusiastically. In the past five years (data from 2017 to 2021), the school's average first choice admission rate in the country was 85.6%, and the average undergraduate employment rate exceeded 88%.

In the past five years, teachers have undertaken more than 1,200 scientific research projects at all levels and types, including more than 500 national and provincial and ministerial scientific research projects, and 40 scientific research results have won provincial and ministerial awards for outstanding scientific research results. The school has established a training base for educational statisticians of the Ministry of Education and a training base for statistical staff of the National Bureau of Statistics, and has trained a large number of statistical business backbones for the national education system and the national statistical industry.

The school has carried out extensive international cooperation and exchanges, and has established friendly cooperative relations with 87 well-known foreign universities such as the University of South Wales, St. Petersburg State University of Economics, Yonsei University, Malaysia, Bonn Savings Bank Consortium College, Chester University, and Essen University of Economics and Management.
