Shaanxi University of Science and Technology is the only multidisciplinary university in western my country with light industry as its specialty. It is a university under the national "Basic Capacity Construction Project for Colleges and Universities in Central and Western China", a high-level university that Shaanxi Province has focused on building during the "12th Five-Year Plan" period, and a "domestic first-class university construction university" in Shaanxi Province. It is a key university jointly built by the Shaanxi Provincial People's Government, China Light Industry Federation, and China Light Industry Group Corporation. The school was founded in 1958, then named Beijing Institute of Light Industry. It is the first light industry college in New China. In 1970, it moved to Xianyang, Shaanxi, and was renamed Northwest Institute of Light Industry. In 1978, it was identified by the State Council as one of the 88 key universities in the country. In 1998, the school was transferred to Shaanxi Province and implemented a system of co-construction by the central and local governments and mainly local management. In 2002, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, it was renamed Shaanxi University of Science and Technology. In 2006, the main body of the school moved east to Xi'an. As one of the "westward migration groups", the school has experienced the struggle and glory of "three entrepreneurships, two relocations, and one transfer" in its more than 60 years of development. The school currently has three campuses: Xi'an Weiyang Campus, Taihua Road Campus and Xianyang Campus, with a total area of ​​2,055 acres and a building area of ​​1.296 million square meters. Xi'an Weiyang Campus covers an area of ​​1,590 acres, with reasonable planning, complete functions, advanced facilities and beautiful environment. It is located on the banks of the scenic Ba River and Weiyang Lake. There are more than 1,350 full-time teachers, more than 100 talents of various types at or above the provincial level such as the National "Excellent Youth" and "Million Talents Project"; there are more than 22,000 full-time students of various types, including more than 4,300 doctoral and master's students; the library has more than 2 million books. There are 3 postdoctoral research stations, 7 first-level disciplines and 33 second-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degrees, 21 first-level disciplines and 91 second-level disciplines authorized for master's degrees, 13 master's professional degree authorization categories, and 63 undergraduate majors, covering 10 major disciplines such as engineering, science, management, literature, economics, law, medicine, art, education, and agriculture. There is 1 construction discipline of Shaanxi Province's "domestic first-class university construction university", 6 provincial advantageous disciplines, 57 national, provincial and ministerial key laboratories, key research bases and engineering technology research centers, 2 provincial collaborative innovation centers, 1 provincial philosophy and social science characteristic construction discipline, 6 provincial postgraduate joint training demonstration workstations, and 7 academician innovation teams. The three disciplines of materials science, chemistry, and engineering are ranked in the top 1% of the ESI global ranking (of which the material science discipline ranks in the top 5‰ in the world), and have entered the ranks of world-class disciplines.

Focusing on the national strategy and the needs of economic and social development, the school innovates the industry-university-research cooperation model, and has successively established the Shaanxi Agricultural Products Processing Technology Research Institute and the Frontier Science and Technology Transfer Research Institute. It has the longest enrollment period and the largest scale of Sino-foreign cooperative education institution in Shaanxi universities-Ulster College of Shaanxi University of Science and Technology. It vigorously promotes the education of international students in China, and recruits undergraduate, master, and doctoral students from 25 countries including Germany, Russia, Spain, the Netherlands, and Pakistan to study at the school.
