Xidian University is a national key university with information and electronics as its main disciplines and coordinated development of engineering, science, management, and liberal arts. It is directly under the Ministry of Education and is one of the key universities in the national "Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform" project and the "211 Project". It is one of the 56 universities in the country with graduate schools. Xidian University is a national key university with information and electronics as the main disciplines, and coordinated development of engineering, science, management, and liberal arts. It is directly under the Ministry of Education. It is one of the key construction universities of the national "Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform" project and the "211 Project", one of the national double innovation demonstration bases, the first 35 demonstration software colleges, the first 9 demonstration microelectronics colleges, the first 9 approved to establish integrated circuit talent training bases and the first batch of first-class network security college construction demonstration projects. The school's information and communication engineering and computer science and technology have been selected as national "double first-class" construction disciplines for two consecutive rounds.

The predecessor of the school was the Central Military Commission Radio School, which was founded in Ruijin, Jiangxi in 1931. It was the first engineering and technical school founded by Mao Zedong and other older generation revolutionaries. The school moved to Xi'an in 1958, was transferred to a local system in 1966, and was named as it is now in 1988.

Over the past 90 years since its establishment, the school has always received great attention from the Party and the State. It is one of the key construction projects of my country's "First Five-Year Plan" and one of the 20 key universities approved by the Central Committee in 1959. In the 1960s, the school was famous at home and abroad as "Western Military Electricity". Comrade Mao Zedong wrote inscriptions for the school twice: "Serve the People Wholeheartedly" and "Hardworking and Simple".

The school currently has two campuses in the north and south, with a total area of ​​about 270 hectares and a building area of ​​more than 1.3 million square meters. The total amount of library book resources is 5.281 million volumes, including about 3.1687 million paper documents and about 15.5 million electronic documents, covering all disciplines or majors of the school.

As of the end of November 2021, the school had a total of 36,868 full-time students, including 22,487 undergraduates, 11,906 master's students, and 2,475 doctoral students. The school has a graduate school. There are 18 colleges, including the School of Communication Engineering, the School of Electronic Engineering, the School of Computer Science and Technology (Demonstration Software College), the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, the School of Physics, the School of Optoelectronic Engineering, the School of Economics and Management, the School of Mathematics and Statistics, the School of Humanities, the School of Foreign Languages, the School of Microelectronics, the School of Life Sciences and Technology, the School of Space Science and Technology, the School of Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology, the School of Network and Information Security, the School of Marxism, the School of Artificial Intelligence, and the School of Network and Continuing Education.

The school is one of the earliest universities in China to establish majors such as information theory, information system engineering, radar, microwave antennas, electronic machinery, and electronic countermeasures. It has pioneered the IT discipline in my country and formed distinct characteristics and advantages in the disciplines of electronics and information. During the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" period, the school was approved for 8 national defense specialty disciplines. The school currently has 2 national "double first-class" key construction discipline groups (including 5 first-level disciplines: information and communication engineering, electronic science and technology, computer science and technology, cyberspace security, and control science and engineering), 2 national first-level key disciplines (covering 6 second-level disciplines), 1 national second-level key discipline, 34 provincial and ministerial key disciplines, 14 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 26 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, 10 postdoctoral research stations, and 65 undergraduate majors. In the fourth round of national first-level discipline evaluation results, 3 disciplines were rated A: the evaluation result of the electronic science and technology discipline was A+, tied for first in the country; the information and communication engineering discipline was in A; the evaluation result of the computer science and technology discipline was A-, and the school's electronic information disciplines continued to maintain the leading level in China. According to the data released by ESI, the school's engineering and computer science are both ranked in the top 1‰ in the world.

The school has established the concept of people-oriented and teachers are the core competitiveness of the university, and has forged a well-structured and innovative teaching staff. There are more than 2,400 full-time teachers, including more than 700 doctoral supervisors and more than 1,500 master's supervisors. The school has 3 academicians, 2 National Natural Science Foundation Innovation Research Groups, 5 key innovation teams of the Ministry of Science and Technology, 6 innovation teams of the Ministry of Education, 4 national teaching masters, 6 national teaching teams, 3 chief scientists of the 973 project, 51 New Century Excellent Talents of the Ministry of Education, 4 winners of the "He Liang He Li" Science and Technology Award, 19 members of the Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, and 165 people enjoying special government subsidies.

The school continuously innovates educational concepts, deepens the reform of teaching content, curriculum system and practical teaching, vigorously promotes quality education, and has achieved remarkable results. There are 14 national specialty majors, 14 national quality courses, 11 national quality resource sharing courses, 3 national video open courses, 14 national quality online open courses, 16 national first-class undergraduate courses, 3 national talent training and teaching bases, 6 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 3 national virtual simulation experimental centers, and 3 national talent training model innovation experimental areas. The school's talent training has formed a "brand" among national universities with its solid theoretical foundation, outstanding engineering practice ability, and strong innovation awareness. The school adheres to the educational concept of "teaching students in accordance with their aptitude and classified training", and actively explores and implements a series of innovative talent training model reforms such as the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program", "Qian Xuesen Space Science Experimental Class" and "Science and Education Combined Collaborative Education Action Plan". In the past five years, the school's undergraduate students have participated in extracurricular science and technology activities at a high rate, and have won more than 3,600 provincial and national disciplines and science and technology competition awards. The overall employment rate of graduate and undergraduate graduates has remained above 96%, ranking among the top universities in the country. In 2006, the school successfully passed the undergraduate teaching level assessment of the Ministry of Education and won the "Excellent" award; in 2020, the school won the "Best Employment Model Award" of Chinese Universities.

Over the years, the school has been committed to system development, scientific and technological research, engineering research and development in the field of electronic information technology, and has created many firsts in my country's electronic and information technology fields, including the first meteorological radar, the first meteor trail communication system, the first programmable radar signal processor, the first millimeter wave communication machine, and the first "cordset telegraph interchanger" in the history of our military communication equipment, the first "tower-type tube cavity oscillator", the first "three-coordinate phased array radar", etc., which have made important contributions to my country's informatization and national defense modernization. The school currently has 9 national science and technology innovation bases, 1 science and technology bureau science and technology innovation base, 10 Ministry of Education science and technology innovation bases, and 38 Shaanxi Province science and technology innovation bases. In 2013, it was selected as a national demonstration base for the cultivation of innovative talents. It has taken the lead in undertaking major and key projects such as "973", "863", major projects, national key R&D plans, major national natural science projects, and national major project scientific research instrument development projects, and has produced a number of landmark research results. Since 2013, the school's scientific research indicators have steadily improved, and fruitful results have been achieved in cognitive radar, mobile communications, network information security, high-power microwave integrated devices, intelligent computing, and electromechanical coupling of large antennas. Since 2016, the school has won 16 national science and technology awards. In 2014, the "Information Perception Technology Collaborative Innovation Center" led by the school passed the national "2011 Plan" certification and ranked first in the industry category, further establishing the school's outstanding national defense scientific research characteristics and advantages among universities across the country.

The school vigorously strengthens the combination of industry, academia, and research, and continuously enhances its scientific and technological innovation capabilities. It has built the Western China Military-Civilian Integration Innovation Valley and Xi'an Electronic Valley, Shaanxi Industrial Research Institute, and National University Science and Technology Park.
