Xinjiang Medical University is located at the foot of the scenic Xuelian Mountain in Urumqi. It is the only medical university in Xinjiang jointly built by the province and the ministry.

With the care and support of Chairman Mao Zedong and Premier Zhou Enlai, the predecessor of the school, "Xinjiang Medical College", was officially included in the 156 key projects of the National "First Five-Year Plan". The school was founded in 1954 and completed and enrolled students in July 1956. In June 1998, Xinjiang Medical College and Xinjiang College of Traditional Chinese Medicine merged to form Xinjiang Medical University. On August 26, 2016, the school was officially approved to become a university jointly built by the province and the ministry.

The school adheres to the school motto of "learning hard, practicing hard, being devoted to medicine, and innovating", takes "educating people for the Party and cultivating talents for the country" as its mission, always adheres to the socialist direction of running schools, takes moral education as its fundamental task, takes running a medical university that satisfies the Party and the people as its starting point and foothold, takes root in the frontier and dedicates itself to the frontier, and has trained more than 100,000 outstanding medical talents, making important contributions to the social stability, economic development, cultural prosperity, scientific research, medical services, talent training, people's livelihood and frontier consolidation in the frontier ethnic minority areas.

The school has five campuses: Xuelianshan Campus, Xinyi Road Campus, Liyushan Campus, Mingyuan Campus, and Cangfanggou Campus; 8 directly affiliated hospitals, all of which are Class A tertiary hospitals. The affiliated hospitals develop in a coordinated and integrated manner, forming a medical resource cluster with concentrated advantages, unique characteristics, reasonable distribution and strong strength.

The school currently has 27,901 full-time students and 18,443 faculty and staff (1,550 in the university and 16,893 in affiliated hospitals). It has one of the first batch of "National Huang Danian-style Teacher Team", one national teaching master, one national teaching master of traditional Chinese medicine colleges, one national master of traditional Chinese medicine, two national famous traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, seven "National Hundred Thousand Talents Project", 67 experts enjoy special government allowances from the State Council, two people are awarded "National Outstanding Communist Party Members", and six people are awarded "National May 1st Labor Medal".

The school has 25 colleges and departments, 28 undergraduate majors and 10 junior college majors, covering four disciplines of medicine, management, science, and literature, forming a professional structure and layout with medicine as the main subject and other disciplines complementing each other. There are 6 national first-class undergraduate professional construction sites, 7 autonomous region first-class undergraduate professional construction sites, 4 national first-class undergraduate courses, 6 autonomous region first-class undergraduate courses; 1 national talent training model innovation experimental zone, 6 national characteristic majors, 6 autonomous region key majors; clinical medicine disciplines are ranked 3.13‰ in the ESI world; 5 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points, 2 doctoral professional degree authorization points; 13 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points, 8 master's professional degree authorization points, 4 postdoctoral research mobile stations, and 4 postdoctoral research workstations.

The school currently has 1 national experimental research base, 1 provincial and ministerial co-construction national key laboratory, 1 national international joint research center, 1 Ministry of Education and provincial and ministerial co-construction laboratory, 1 Ministry of Education Higher Education Discipline Innovation and Talent Introduction Plan, 1 Ministry of Education International Cooperation Joint Laboratory, 1 Ministry of Education and Provincial Co-construction Collaborative Innovation Center, 1 Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center, 13 autonomous region key laboratories, 4 autonomous region clinical medicine research centers, 1 autonomous region engineering research center, and 24 autonomous region research institutes. It has won more than two first prizes in the Autonomous Region Science and Technology Progress Award for six consecutive years, and the number of Autonomous Region Science and Technology Progress Awards ranks first among all universities in Xinjiang.

The school has continuously strengthened exchanges and cooperation with well-known universities at home and abroad, and has established comprehensive counterpart support and cooperation relations with Central South University, Jilin University, and Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. It has established in-depth co-construction and cooperation relations with more than 20 universities including Fudan University, Sun Yat-sen University, China Pharmaceutical University, Nanjing Medical University, and Wenzhou Medical University. It has established inter-school cooperation relations with universities and research institutions in many countries such as the United States, Russia, Japan, Britain, France, Germany, and Pakistan. It has become the first demonstration base for universities in the autonomous region to study in Xinjiang, the first batch of universities to receive government scholarships, and has been awarded the Advanced Collective for International Students in China by the Ministry of Education. It has trained more than 100 graduate students and more than 1,000 undergraduates from 39 countries including India, Pakistan, and Kazakhstan.
