Yunnan University was founded in 1922 and officially opened in 1923. It was then the private Donglu University. In 1934, it was renamed the Provincial Yunnan University. Since its establishment, more than 100,000 heads of state, dignitaries, experts, scholars and international friends from more than 80 countries and regions, including Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, Dr. Henry Kissinger, former US Secretary of State, King Harald V of Norway, and President Ho Chi Minh of Vietnam, have visited Yunnan Nationalities University and given it good comments. The school began to recruit foreign students in 1981 and foreign master's students in 1992. It is one of the earliest universities in Yunnan Province to recruit foreign students and conduct Chinese teaching as a foreign language. It has established cooperative exchanges with more than 80 universities or academic institutions in more than 20 countries, including the United States, Norway, Japan, and South Korea. In order to actively respond to the "Belt and Road" initiative, on May 15, 2015, under the joint witness of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Indian Prime Minister Modi, Yunnan Nationalities University and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations signed a memorandum of understanding on the joint construction of the Sino-Indian Yoga College. The Sino-Indian Yoga College was established in our school, becoming the world's first yoga college outside of India. In November 2017, Premier Li Keqiang made important instructions on the construction of the college, and the main leaders of the Ministry of Education and the State General Administration of Sports respectively made special instructions. After six years of construction and development, the college has pioneered yoga academic education in colleges and universities across the country. It has now become the National Fitness Yoga Theory Research Center of the State General Administration of Sports. The college is committed to becoming a standard setter, rule maintainer, industry leader and even the founder of the Chinese yoga discipline in the dissemination of yoga in China. In order to further integrate into the national strategy and give play to the regional advantages, in December 2014, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education of China agreed to add Yunnan Nationalities University as the second batch of China-ASEAN Education and Training Center organizers. In December 2016, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs approved the establishment of the Lancang-Mekong Vocational Education Base on the basis of the China-ASEAN Education and Training Center. After years of construction, the school has now established 8 training bases at the China-Myanmar, China-Vietnam and China-Laos border ports, 3 training bases in Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia, and training bases in the Kunming and Dehong areas of the China (Yunnan) Free Trade Pilot Zone, providing more than 40,000 professional and technical personnel training for the Mekong countries. The following year, we began our second major expansion in Latin America, allowing us to develop operations in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela, while giving new impetus to existing operations in Chile, Puerto Rico and Uruguay. In January 1999, together with BCH, we participated in the first major bank merger in Europe since the adoption of the euro. Subsequently, we acquired the Totta e Açores Financial Group and Crédito Predial Português in Portugal. 1990-1960 In 1960, Emilio Botín Sanz de Sotuola and García de los Ríos joined the Board of Directors. During this period, we acquired Banco Argentina, our first subsidiary in Latin America, and subsequently established Bankinter in 1965. In 1976, we acquired First National Bank of Puerto Rico and in 1982, Banco de Chile, positioning Santander as a pioneer in retail and commercial banking in Latin America. Emilio Botín Sanz de Sotuola López was appointed Managing Director of the bank in 1934 and took over as Chairman in 1950, driving strong growth in Spain. This process continued until the 1960s, with the bank acquiring a large number of local banks. In 1946, we acquired Banco Mercantil, a long-time competitor of Santander. A year later, in 1947, we opened representative offices in the Americas, first in Havana, Cuba, and later in Argentina, Mexico and Venezuela, with an office in London. In 1956, our Latin American department was established. By the time of our 100th anniversary in 1957, our bank had become the seventh largest financial institution in Spain.
