Inner Mongolia Normal University (formerly Inner Mongolia Normal College) is the first higher education institution established by the Party and the State in the frontier ethnic minority areas after the founding of New China. It is a key university in the autonomous region, a college supported by the national "Revitalization Plan for Higher Education in Central and Western China", and a school under the Ministry of Education's "Plan for Counterpart Support to Higher Education Institutions in Western Regions". On November 20, 1951, the Autonomous Region People's Government decided to build Inner Mongolia Normal College in Ulanhot City in 1952 and enroll students. In August 1954, the school moved west to Hohhot City and merged with Inner Mongolia Normal College, which was formed by the merger of Zhangjiakou Teachers College and Suiyuan Teachers College in August 1953, to become the new Inner Mongolia Normal College. In 1978, the school began to enroll graduate students. In 1982, it was renamed "Inner Mongolia Normal University" and was listed as a key university in the autonomous region. In 2000, Inner Mongolia Education College was merged into the school. In 2006, the school was approved as a first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization point. After several generations of hard work and practical exploration, it has now become an important base for cultivating basic education teachers in the autonomous region, and is the autonomous region's basic education teacher training center, primary and secondary school teacher continuing education center, and basic education reform and development research center.

The school has Saihan Campus and Shengle Campus, covering a total area of ​​2.228 million square meters, a school building area of ​​960,000 square meters, and a total fixed asset value of more than 3.48 billion yuan, of which the total value of teaching equipment is more than 720 million yuan. The library has more than 2.76 million books and more than 2.33 million electronic books and electronic journals. The school has 20 party and government management agencies, 26 teaching institutions, 3 cooperatively-run colleges, and 4 affiliated schools (including the Second Middle School Affiliated to Inner Mongolia Normal University and the Second School Affiliated to Inner Mongolia Normal University). There are 2,166 faculty members (excluding cooperative education), including 1,355 full-time teachers, 618 full-time teachers with doctoral degrees, accounting for 46.3% of the total number of full-time teachers, 228 full-time teachers with senior professional titles, accounting for 16.8% of the total number of full-time teachers, and 445 full-time teachers with associate senior professional titles, accounting for 32.8% of the total number of full-time teachers; there are 70 doctoral supervisors, 1,202 master's supervisors, 1 national teaching master, 23 autonomous region teaching masters, and 35 young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions in the country and the autonomous region. From 2002 to the present, one person has been selected and introduced as a national "Yangtze River Scholar", 166 people (times) have been selected for the "Million Talent Project", the national "Ten Thousand Talents Plan", and the autonomous region's "New Century 321 Talent Project", 29 experts have enjoyed special allowances from the State Council, and 68 people (times) and 12 teams have been funded by the autonomous region's "Grassland Talents" project.

The school has 29,548 full-time undergraduate and junior college students, 4,719 master's and doctoral students, 567 adult education students of various types, and 593 international students of various types, forming a multi-level talent training system. There are 97 undergraduate majors (including 24 general teacher majors, 20 vocational education teacher majors, and 71 majors for enrollment in 2021), covering 10 major disciplines. The school has 1 national-level boutique course, 1 national-level boutique video open course, 2 national-level teaching teams, and 6 characteristic professional construction sites of the Ministry of Education; there is 1 national-level "comprehensive reform pilot for majors", 1 autonomous region-level "comprehensive reform pilot for majors", 32 autonomous region-level brand majors, and 4 autonomous region-level key construction majors. There are 78 autonomous region-level boutique courses, 17 autonomous region-level teaching teams, and 10 autonomous region-level experimental teaching demonstration centers. There are 15 national-level first-class undergraduate professional construction sites and 12 autonomous region-level first-class undergraduate professional construction sites. There is one key research base for undergraduate talent training in ethnic minority areas of the Ministry of Education's National Education Development Center to strengthen the sense of community of the Chinese nation, and 18 key disciplines and key cultivation disciplines in the autonomous region. There is one national modern industrial college.

The school has 8 first-level disciplines with doctoral degree-granting authority, 1 postdoctoral research station, 27 first-level disciplines with master's degree-granting authority, and 11 master's professional degrees; it has the qualification of recommendation for admission to master's programs without examination. Over the past 70 years since its establishment, the university has adhered to the school motto of "dedication, truth-seeking, unity, and progress" and has trained and sent more than 280,000 graduates of various types. The school adheres to the principle of open education and has established good cooperative relations with more than 20 countries including Mongolia, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Canada, Australia, and more than 80 well-known domestic colleges, scientific research institutions, enterprises, institutions, and local governments. In 2009, the school was approved as a postgraduate training unit for Chinese international education. The school has successively hired nearly 500 famous experts and scholars at home and abroad, including 7 academicians of the two academies and 5 academicians, as academic consultants, visiting professors and part-time professors of the school.
