Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine

Founded in 1954, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine is one of the earliest higher Chinese medicine colleges in China. It is a university jointly established by the People's Government of Jiangsu Province and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 2017, the school was selected as a national "double first-class" construction university and a Jiangsu high-level university construction university. In 2018, it became a "double first-class" construction university jointly built by the Ministry of Education and Jiangsu Province. At the beginning of its establishment, the school trained and sent the first batch of teachers for higher Chinese medicine education in New China, compiled and formulated the first set of textbooks and teaching syllabuses, and made pioneering contributions to the establishment and promotion of the higher Chinese medicine education model in New China. It is known as China's "cradle of higher Chinese medicine education."

The school is located in the ancient capital of Nanjing, which is rich in natural beauty and has three campuses in Xianlin, Hanzhongmen and Taizhou. There are more than 20,000 students of various types, 33 undergraduate majors, involving 6 disciplines of medicine, management, science, engineering, economics and literature, forming a school-running pattern with Chinese medicine as the main body, integration of Chinese and Western medicine, and coordinated development of multi-disciplinary support.

The school currently has 3 national key disciplines, 2 national key (cultivation) disciplines, 4 advantageous disciplines of Jiangsu universities, 3 brand majors of Jiangsu Province, 10 key disciplines of Jiangsu Province, and 33 key disciplines of Chinese medicine of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The school is one of the first batch of doctoral and master's degree awarding institutions in the country, with 4 first-level disciplines of Chinese medicine, Chinese pharmacy, integration of Chinese and Western medicine, and nursing, and 1 professional doctoral degree authorization point of Chinese medicine, 11 first-level master's degree and 5 professional master's degree authorization points, and 3 postdoctoral research mobile stations. In the fourth round of national discipline evaluation, the three main disciplines of Chinese medicine, Chinese pharmacy, and integration of Chinese and Western medicine were all included in Class A. Two disciplines, clinical medicine and pharmacology and toxicology, entered the top 1% of the ESI global rankings. In 2019, the university ranked 128th in the ESI institutional rankings of Chinese mainland universities. In 2017, it was shortlisted in the U.S. News World University Rankings. In 2018, it was listed in the Nature Index TOP200 domestic universities. It was shortlisted in the top 128 of the "Academic" ranking of Chinese universities in the United States Scimago, and was shortlisted in the top 100 list of undergraduate education quality of "Double First-Class" universities. The top 100 first-class majors of Chinese universities ranked by the Aires Alumni Association in 2019.

The school has always adhered to the student-centered approach, shouldered the fundamental mission of cultivating morality and educating people, and focused on promoting the exploration of the training model of excellent doctors (9-year undergraduate and doctoral programs in traditional Chinese medicine, "5+3" innovative and outstanding talents), excellent scientists ("4+5" undergraduate and doctoral programs in traditional Chinese medicine) and excellent engineers (applied talents in traditional Chinese medicine/pharmacy undergraduate and master programs). It has teaching institutions such as the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, College of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, College of Pharmacy, College of Medicine, College of Integrative Medicine, College of Acupuncture and Massage, College of Health Rehabilitation, College of Nursing, College of Health Economics and Management, College of Artificial Intelligence and Information Technology, College of International Education, and the First, Second, and Third Clinical Medical Schools. It has fully cooperated with the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Sciences, to jointly build the "New College of Traditional Chinese Medicine" (a 9-year undergraduate and doctoral program in traditional Chinese medicine "4+5"). It has 6 directly affiliated hospitals, including the Affiliated Hospital (Jiangsu Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine), the Second Affiliated Hospital, the Affiliated Nanjing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the Affiliated Nanjing Hospital, 29 non-directly affiliated hospitals, 4 clinical medical schools integrating traditional Chinese and Western medicine, and 3 affiliated pharmaceutical companies (Jiangsu Kangyuan Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Suzhong Pharmaceutical Group Co., Ltd., and Hong Kong Wai Yuen Tong Pharmaceutical Holdings Co., Ltd.), with more than 100 teaching and graduation internship bases of various types.

The school has multiple scientific research platforms, including the National Development and Reform Commission Engineering Research Center, the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory, the Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center, the Jiangsu Provincial Key Laboratory, the Jiangsu Provincial Collaborative Innovation Center, the Jiangsu Provincial Engineering Research Center (Engineering Laboratory), the Jiangsu Provincial Key Laboratory of Higher Education Institutions, the Jiangsu Key Research Base of Philosophy and Social Sciences, and the National Technology Transfer Demonstration Center. In recent years, the school has undertaken major national science and technology projects, the National Natural Science Foundation and the National Social Science Foundation major projects, ranking among the top Chinese medicine colleges in the country. It has won three second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, one second prize of the National Technological Invention Award, and five first prizes of provincial and ministerial science and technology awards. In the past two years, many high-level papers have been published in journals such as NATURE, JAMA, JOURNAL OF CLINICAL ONCOLOGY, and NATURE COMMUNICATIONS.

The school has a strong faculty and many famous experts. There are 6 national medical masters, 2 "Yangtze River Scholars" distinguished professors, 6 winners of the National Outstanding Young Scientist Fund, 3 members of the State Council's discipline evaluation group, 7 national candidates for the 100,000-million project, 2 national "10,000-million plan" science and technology innovation leaders, 5 Qihuang scholars of the "100,000-million" talent project for the inheritance and innovation of traditional Chinese medicine, 54 winners of the State Council's special government allowance, 2 young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions to the country, 5 national teaching masters and teaching masters of traditional Chinese medicine colleges, 1 winner of the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Science and Technology Innovation Award, 4 national famous Chinese medicine practitioners, and a group of national model teachers and national excellent teachers have emerged. The school insists on both attracting and training. A group of young teachers have received funding from the National Natural Science Foundation of China's Outstanding Young Scientist Fund and the Jiangsu Province Distinguished Professor Fund. The first-class faculty has accumulated a solid talent foundation for the creation of a first-class traditional Chinese medicine university.

The school is a World Health Organization (WHO) Traditional Medicine Cooperation Center and an International Acupuncture Training Center. It is one of the first batch of higher Chinese medicine colleges approved by the Ministry of Education to accept and train foreign students and students from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao. It has trained more than 30,000 international students from five continents. In 1993, the school cooperated with the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in Australia to open a Chinese medicine major, which was the first time that my country cooperated with a regular Western university to carry out Chinese medicine degree education. On June 20, 2010, President Xi Jinping attended the unveiling ceremony of the Confucius Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine established by our school and RMIT and delivered an important speech, highly praising the school's level of education. With the support of the Ministry of Education, in February 2019, the school signed a contract with the National University of Ireland (Galway) to jointly build the Confucius Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Regenerative Medicine. The establishment of this Confucius Institute is an active exploration to implement General Secretary Xi Jinping's "promoting a better integration of traditional medicine and modern medicine with an open and inclusive attitude" and promote the overseas development of Chinese medicine in the new era. The school has extensive exchanges and cooperation with colleges and universities or academic groups and institutions in more than 90 countries and regions, and has established 8 overseas Chinese medicine centers in Oceania, Europe and America.

In the long-term practice of running schools, the school has adhered to the school-running philosophy of "learning from both Chinese and Western cultures, and being precise and sincere", insisted on characteristic development, pursued excellence, and rapidly developed various undertakings. Facing the future, the school will further emancipate its mind, deepen reforms, vigorously implement the strategy of "strengthening the school with talents, climbing the peak of disciplines, open collaboration, and cultural leadership", continue to adhere to characteristic development, strengthen connotation construction, and strive to create a high-level, distinctive, and international first-class Chinese medicine university.
