Changzhou University is located in Changzhou, Jiangsu, a famous historical and cultural city in the south of the Yangtze River with a prosperous economy and rich humanities. It is a provincial full-time undergraduate college jointly established by the People's Government of Jiangsu Province, China National Petroleum Corporation, China Petrochemical Corporation and China National Offshore Oil Corporation. It is a university under the Jiangsu High-level University Construction Peak Plan, and a university jointly established by the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education and the Changzhou Municipal People's Government.

The school was founded in 1978 and was formerly the Wuxi Branch and Changzhou Branch of Nanjing Institute of Chemical Technology. In 1981, with the approval of the State Council, the school was named Jiangsu Institute of Chemical Technology; in 1992, it became a ministry-affiliated college managed by China Petrochemical Corporation and was renamed Jiangsu Institute of Petrochemical Technology; in 2002, it was renamed Jiangsu Institute of Technology; in 2010, it was renamed Changzhou University. After 43 years of development, the school has now established a complete bachelor-master-doctor talent training system and a multi-level scientific research and social service system. In 2020, the school ranked 129th in the country in the Soft Science China University Rankings.

The school has complete infrastructure and excellent school conditions. There are two campuses in Science and Education City and West Taihu Lake. The school has 21 colleges, 20,600 full-time undergraduates, and 3,900 doctoral and master's students. At the same time, the School of Continuing Education (Li Gongpu Social Education College) and Changzhou University Huaide College (Independent College) were established.

The school has a relatively complete range of disciplines and distinct disciplinary characteristics, covering ten major disciplines, including engineering, science, management, economics, literature, law, art, medicine, agriculture, and education. There are currently 2 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points, 15 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points, and 17 professional master's degree authorization points. It has 2 provincial advantageous disciplines and 7 provincial "13th Five-Year Plan" key disciplines. Three disciplines, chemistry, materials science, and engineering, are in the top 1% of the global ESI discipline rankings. The school adheres to open education and continuously promotes high-quality international cooperation. Focusing on student exchange, academic exchanges, and scientific research cooperation, it has established close cooperative relations with more than 60 universities in more than 30 countries and regions. It has organized five Sino-foreign cooperative education projects in electronic information engineering, pharmaceutical engineering, computer, information management and information systems, and applied chemistry with Maynooth University in Ireland, St. Xavier University in Canada, and New Jersey City University in the United States, and has been approved for a high-level demonstration construction project for Sino-foreign cooperative education in provincial universities. Together with Bolivar University, we have established my country's first Confucius Institute in Venezuela and hosted the Confucius Classroom in the Andalusia Autonomous Region of Spain. We have established think tank platforms such as the Intercultural Research Institute, the Thailand Research Center, the Latin American Research Center, and the Israel Cultural Research Center to continuously promote cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries.
