The school has a long history of running schools, with multiple sources and profound cultural heritage. The school originated from Shanghai Dagong Vocational School in 1933. In 1953, Shanghai Shipbuilding Industry School was established, the first secondary specialized shipbuilding school in New China. It moved to Zhenjiang in 1970, was renamed Zhenjiang Shipbuilding Industry School in 1971, upgraded to undergraduate and renamed Zhenjiang Shipbuilding College in 1978, and renamed East China Shipbuilding Institute in 1993. In 1999, the school was transferred from the former China State Shipbuilding Corporation to the management of Jiangsu Province. In 1999, Jiangsu Jianghai Trade School was merged, and in 2000, the Sericulture Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences merged with the school. In 2004, the school was renamed Jiangsu University of Science and Technology. The school is a university jointly established by the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government and the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, and a university jointly established by the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government and China Shipbuilding Group Co., Ltd. The school began to recruit and train undergraduates in 1978, obtained the right to confer master's degrees in 1993, and obtained the right to confer doctoral degrees in 2008. The school has more than 20,000 undergraduate students, more than 4,700 doctoral and master's students, and more than 600 undergraduate, master's and doctoral degree students. There is also Jiangsu University of Science and Technology Suzhou Institute of Technology, with more than 7,800 students. There are currently two campuses in Zhenjiang Changshan and Mengxi, a Zhangjiagang campus and a Shanghai office, covering an area of ​​3,979 acres.

As the only industry-specific university in Jiangsu Province that mainly serves the shipbuilding and marine engineering equipment industry, the school is one of the universities in the country with the most complete shipbuilding industry-related disciplines and majors, and has the advantages of shipbuilding characteristics, integrity and application. The comprehensive strength of the school ranks 120th among mainland Chinese universities in the third-party evaluation agency USNews 2022 World University Comprehensive Ranking. There are currently 3 postdoctoral research mobile stations, 5 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points, 25 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points, 14 master's professional degree awarding categories, and 66 undergraduate majors. Three disciplines, namely engineering, materials science and chemistry, are in the top 1% of the ESI global discipline rankings, and 10 disciplines are selected in the "2021 Soft Science China Best Discipline Ranking". There are currently 5 national defense specialty disciplines, 3 Jiangsu provincial college advantage disciplines, and 5 Jiangsu provincial "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" first-level discipline key cultivation disciplines; 3 pilot majors of the Ministry of Education's "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program", 12 national first-class undergraduate professional construction sites, and 6 provincial first-class undergraduate professional construction sites.

The school attaches importance to the construction of the faculty team, and deeply promotes the talent-strengthening school strategy to provide strong human resources guarantee for the school's reform, construction and development. There are more than 2,290 faculty and staff, including more than 1,570 full-time teachers. There are more than 240 people with senior professional titles, more than 750 people with associate senior professional titles, and more than 1,020 doctors. Adhere to the national demand-driven, focus on the close integration of applied basic research, technological innovation, and the promotion and application of high-tech achievements, and actively contribute to the shipbuilding industry and economic and social development. The school won 2 special prizes, 2 second prizes and 1 second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. The research projects hosted by the school won 3 first prizes of the Ministry of Education's Outstanding Scientific Research Achievements Award for Higher Education Institutions, 1 first prize of the Jiangsu Science and Technology Award, and 1 silver prize of the China Patent Award. It won 1 first prize of the Jiangsu Province Philosophy and Social Science Outstanding Achievement Award. The school took the lead in hosting 3 national key R&D plan projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology, 1 advanced manufacturing cluster project of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, 2 high-tech ship scientific research projects of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and was approved for 1 characteristic discipline condition construction project of the National Defense Science and Technology Commission. The "Integrated Control and Key Equipment Support System and Application for Large Dredgers" completed by the school has completely replaced foreign imports. The school has participated in the research and development of ultra-deepwater semi-submersible drilling platforms, "Jiaolong" manned submersibles, "Struggler" full-sea manned submersibles, dynamic positioning and tracking systems for dredgers, luxury cruise ships, large container ships and other equipment. The digital design and manufacturing systems, high-efficiency welding equipment, and ship enterprise management software developed by the school are widely used in major ship companies. The ship logistics integrated support system is leading in China, and the diesel engines for lifeboats account for nearly 60% of the global market. The school's Sericulture Research Institute is the only national sericulture research institution in my country. It is the world's sericulture germplasm resource preservation and research center, sericulture technology research center, and sericulture international cooperation and exchange center. The school has developed and provided major sericulture varieties and mulberry planting and silkworm breeding technologies in China and even the world, and has won 17 national awards. During President Xi Jinping's visit to Cuba, the mulberry seeds presented to Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro came from the school.

The school has always attached great importance to exchanges and cooperation with domestic and foreign countries, adhered to internationalization and openness, and continuously expanded the way of running schools. It has established long-term cooperative relations with a number of well-known companies such as Jiangnan Shipyard (Group) Co., Ltd., Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd., Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., Dalian Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Co., Ltd., Kunming Ship Equipment Group Co., Ltd., and China Merchants Heavy Industry (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd. The China Shipbuilding Industry Engineer Continuing Education College is located in the school.
