Nanjing Institute of Technology is a general undergraduate university in Jiangsu Province with a century-old history, profound engineering background and distinctive application characteristics. It is the chairman unit of the National Higher Education Applied Undergraduate Colleges Special Committee, the vice chairman unit of the National Applied University Graduate Education Development Alliance, the first batch of pilot universities for the Ministry of Education's "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" and "CDIO Engineering Education Reform", the National Electromechanical Control Talent Training Model Innovation Experimental Zone, the National Industry-University-Research Cooperation Typical University, the National Graduate Employment Typical Experience University, and the chairman unit of the Jiangsu Higher Education Association Applied Undergraduate College Research Association. It has successively won the "Jiangsu Province Advanced University for Teaching Work", "Jiangsu Province Mass Entrepreneurship and Innovation Demonstration Base", "Jiangsu Province Safe Campus Demonstration School", and "Jiangsu Province Civilized Campus". In 2019 and 2020, it won the first place in the comprehensive assessment of local ordinary colleges and universities in Jiangsu Province, and was approved as a master's degree awarding institution in 2021.

The school is located in Fangshan Scenic Area, Jiangning, Nanjing, covering an area of ​​nearly 3,000 acres, with excellent school conditions. There are currently 19 educational and teaching units, with more than 24,000 full-time students, including nearly 800 master's students. There are more than 2,100 faculty and staff, including more than 1,600 full-time teachers, 44.8% of full-time teachers with doctoral degrees, and more than 50% of professional teachers with senior professional titles. There is one national off-campus practice teaching base for college students, four national engineering education practice centers, one provincial key industry college, 12 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, more than 80 school-level engineering project teaching bases and project workshops, and 289 off-campus practice education bases have been built in cooperation with Fortune 500 companies, domestic leading companies, and industry backbone companies. The total value of teaching and scientific research equipment assets exceeds 400 million yuan, providing a solid foundation for the cultivation of high-level application-oriented talents.

The school insists on undergraduate education and teaching as the center. There are currently 72 undergraduate majors, of which more than 90% of the majors have distinct industry characteristics, more than 80% of the majors are highly consistent with the top ten strategic emerging industries in Jiangsu Province, and more than 35% of the majors are national and provincial key or brand specialty majors. It has been approved to build 8 national first-class undergraduate professional construction sites, 3 national characteristic majors, 5 majors that have passed the engineering education professional certification, 6 majors in the national excellent engineer training program, and 2 national comprehensive professional reform pilot majors. The mechanical and electrical majors are the first batch of CDIO engineering education model reform pilot majors of the Ministry of Education; it has been approved to build 17 provincial first-class undergraduate professional construction sites, 9 provincial characteristic majors, 16 Jiangsu key majors, and 1 provincial ideological and political demonstration major. It is an innovative experimental base for the training model of mechanical talents in Jiangsu Province and a provincial virtual teaching and research office construction and cultivation point for Jiangsu universities. The school actively carried out the pilot project teaching reform 3.0, and made every effort to create the characteristics and highlights of high-level application-oriented talent training. It has won 5 national teaching achievement awards and 31 provincial teaching achievement awards; it has established 4 national first-class courses, 23 provincial first-class courses, 1 provincial ideological and political demonstration course, 13 national and provincial excellent courses, 13 national and provincial online open courses, and 9 other types of provincial courses; it has edited and published more than 500 textbooks, including 4 national excellent textbooks, 74 national planning textbooks, 39 provincial key textbooks, and won 2 second prizes for national excellent textbooks (vocational education and continuing education), 1 national advanced individual in textbook construction, and 9 provincial excellent cultivation textbooks. The school focuses on strengthening the cultivation of students' innovation and entrepreneurship capabilities. In recent years, students have won more than 300 national competition awards such as the "Internet +" College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the "Challenge Cup" National College Student Extracurricular Academic and Scientific Works Competition, the National College Student Entrepreneurship Competition, and the National College Student Electronic Design Competition; the national maker space "Tianyin Dream Factory" has incubated a total of 186 entrepreneurial companies, successfully won the "National Entrepreneurship Incubation Demonstration Base", and ranked among the "Top Ten Jiangsu Characteristic Maker Spaces", and students' entrepreneurship was selected into the "Top 100 National College Student Entrepreneurship Heroes List", including 3 "Top Ten", becoming a typical example of national innovation and entrepreneurship education.

The school insists on taking discipline construction as the leader, and has built a discipline system with engineering as the main focus, and coordinated development of economics, management, literature, law, art, science, etc. There are currently 3 professional master's degree authorization points, 7 key construction disciplines in Jiangsu Province during the "14th Five-Year Plan", and the "Engineering" discipline has entered the top 1% of the ESI global ranking. The enrollment scale of master's students has continued to grow rapidly, and the training model has achieved remarkable results. It has established one national joint training demonstration base for engineering professional degree graduate students, four provincial excellent graduate workstations, two provincial excellent graduate courses, and won three provincial graduate education reform achievement awards. Four graduate students have won the title of "National Engineering Master Internship Practice Excellent Achievement Winner", ranking first among similar institutions in the country. The school has built five national-level disciplinary research platforms, including the National Power Simulation and Control Center, the National Postdoctoral Research Workstation, the National Technology Transfer Demonstration Institution, the National Enterprise Technology Center, and the National Maker Space, as well as 20 provincial-level disciplinary research platforms, including the Jiangsu Province Distribution Network Intelligent Technology and Equipment Collaborative Innovation Center, the Jiangsu Province Intelligent Manufacturing Equipment Engineering Laboratory, and the Jiangsu Province Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle Industry Research Center. In recent years, the university has been approved for 384 projects at the provincial and ministerial level and above, 67 provincial and ministerial and national directly-managed industry science and technology awards, 726 authorized invention patents, and nearly 400 transferred patents. It has been approved as a provincial intellectual property rights standardization demonstration university, a provincial patent transformation special implementation unit, and the Nanjing Intelligent Manufacturing Industry Intellectual Property Operation Center. It has been rated as an advanced unit of provincial science and technology work, an advanced collective of provincial technology transfer work, and a provincial science and technology service industry "Top 100" institution.

Actively carry out international exchanges and foreign cooperation, and have established long-term cooperation and exchange relations with many countries and regions such as Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, Finland, the Netherlands, Sweden, New Zealand, and South Korea. It has been selected as a member of the "Jiangsu-Korea University Cooperation Alliance". The "Nanjing Institute of Technology-European University Intelligence Introduction Platform" was approved by the Provincial Education Department as the first batch of key platform construction projects for the introduction of overseas high-level talents in the "14th Five-Year Plan"; it has established two Sino-foreign cooperative education projects approved by the Ministry of Education with Northumbria University in the United Kingdom and the University of Oulu in Finland, and has carried out joint education with foreign universities such as the University of Strathclyde in the United Kingdom, Magdeburg University of Applied Sciences in Germany, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the United States, and Saxon University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands. Relying on its distinctive disciplines and industry advantages, the school actively serves the industry and regional economic and social development, actively explores and innovates diversified science and technology incubation mechanisms, and continuously strengthens cooperation with local governments, large institutes, famous schools and enterprises, realizing the benign interactive development of applied research and transformation of scientific and technological achievements. In recent years, facing the development of strategic emerging industries such as high-end equipment manufacturing, smart grid, and new materials, the school has cooperated with Jiangning to build the "Tianyin Lake Science and Technology Demonstration Zone", and jointly built Tencent Cloud Artificial Intelligence Industry College and Yixing Industry College with a number of leading enterprises and local governments. It has cultivated more than 250,000 engineering and technical talents and management talents represented by Academician Shen Guorong of the Chinese Academy of Engineering for the development of the country and the economy and society, and has a high influence in the fields of machinery, electricity, energy power, and nuclear industry.
