Jiangsu Second Normal University is a provincial general undergraduate school with teacher education as its main body and training of primary and preschool teachers as its focus. Its predecessor, Jiangsu Education College, was founded in 1952 and was one of the 17 public undergraduate schools in Jiangsu Province in the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China. In 1959, the school took the lead in offering general undergraduate education among provincial education colleges across the country. The school was closed during the "Cultural Revolution" and resumed in 1978. In 2013, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the school was converted into a general undergraduate school and renamed Jiangsu Second Normal University.

The school insists on serving the economic and social development of Jiangsu and the reform and innovation of education as its own responsibility, accurately grasps the general trend, scientifically judges the situation, conforms to the development trend, and gradually forms the school-running characteristics of "integration of pre-service and post-service, leading education and scientific research, and distinct practice orientation".

The school is a national-level excellent teacher training program reform project undertaking colleges and universities, a national-level primary and secondary school backbone teacher and backbone principal training base, a training base for the Ministry of Education's primary and secondary school principal pilot class, and the only teacher education reform experimental base in Jiangsu Province. Jiangsu Provincial Teacher Training Center, Education Administrative Cadre Training Center, Teacher Qualification Certification Guidance Center, etc. are all affiliated institutions of the school. A teacher education management service system with "four bases, five centers and one think tank" as the core framework, mutual support, and complete functions is helping the school play an increasingly important role in the process of reform and innovation of teacher education in Jiangsu.

The layout of disciplines and majors is constantly optimized. There are 14 secondary colleges and 34 undergraduate majors, covering 9 major disciplines. Priority is given to the development of normal majors, and 17 normal majors cover all disciplines in the whole stage of basic education, of which 12 majors undertake the task of targeted training of rural teachers in Jiangsu Province. Appropriately develop non-teacher education majors, 17 non-teacher education majors are closely linked to the needs of industry and enterprises, and the ability to serve regional economic and social development has been steadily improved. The proportion of teacher education students in school is 68.7%, ranking among the top similar colleges in the province.

The construction of teaching connotation has been steadily promoted. It has 2 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 16 provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 1 brand major, 3 key majors, 6 characteristic majors, 14 first-class undergraduate courses, and 3 practical teaching centers. It has 3 key construction disciplines in Jiangsu Province, 3 provincial teaching teams, 2 key research bases for philosophy and social sciences in colleges and universities, and 2 outstanding innovation teams. It has built the only key cultivation think tank in the province's education field. Since 2013, it has built 9 online open courses in Jiangsu Province, won 19 key textbooks in Jiangsu Province, won 2 first prizes and 2 second prizes in national teaching achievement awards, and won 5 special prizes, 1 first prize, and 2 second prizes in provincial teaching achievement awards.

The construction of the teaching staff has achieved remarkable results. Adhere to the combination of introduction and training, expand the scale of teachers, and initially form a teaching staff with excellent overall quality, continuously optimized structure and good development trend. There are 596 full-time teachers, of which 46.14% are senior professionals and 41.28% are doctors. Among them, there are more than 70 people, including national inspectors, provincial inspectors, experts enjoying special government allowances, young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions in the province, training targets of the provincial "333 Project", high-level talents of the "Six Talent Peaks", provincial "Double Innovation Doctors", provincial May 1st Innovation Experts, provincial excellent young social sciences, Zijin cultural talents and special teachers of primary and secondary schools.

The open school-running pattern has been steadily expanded. The construction of a "three-party collaborative" talent training community has been completed. It has established cooperative relations with more than 40 universities and research institutes in more than 10 countries (regions), and cooperated with high-level overseas universities to establish an academician workstation, a Russian cultural center, a Spanish cultural center and a cross-strait opera and Chinese studies inheritance exchange base, and was approved by the Ministry of Education for one country research center. We have signed agreements with primary and secondary schools, kindergartens, industries, enterprises and scientific research institutes inside and outside the province to build 331 off-campus internship, practice and training bases.

The conditions for running schools have been significantly improved. There are two campuses, Shiqiu and Caochangmen, covering an area of ​​718,700 square meters and a total building area of ​​385,900 square meters. Among them, the teaching and administrative area is 191,500 square meters, and the student dormitory area is 120,900 square meters. The total value of existing teaching and scientific research equipment is 88.9017 million yuan, and there are 340 laboratories and training sites of various types, 1.17198 million paper books, and 4.67 million electronic books available.

The quality of talent training has been effectively improved. Deepen the reform of talent training models, strengthen the training of outstanding teachers at all levels, and actively carry out targeted training of rural teachers. In the past three years, students have won 892 awards in various disciplines, cultural and sports competitions at the provincial and ministerial levels or above, including 17 first prizes, 31 second prizes, and 57 third prizes in the Jiangsu Provincial Normal Students Basic Skills Competition. The total number of awards ranks among the top in similar schools in the province. In recent years, the year-end employment rate of graduates has remained stable at more than 90%.

Over the past 70 years, the school has adhered to the school motto of "respecting morality, dedicating work, seeking truth and innovation" and the teacher spirit of "learning to be a teacher and behaving as a model for the world", holding high the banner of normal education, maintaining strong determination, not forgetting the original intention of teaching, and keeping in mind the mission of cultivating talents, and has delivered more than 200,000 qualified talents to the Jiangsu education front.
