Nanjing University of Science and Technology is a national key university affiliated to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The school was established in 1953, the highest military science and technology institution of New China - the Chinese People's Liberation Army Military Engineering College (abbreviated as "Harbin Military Engineering"), and has gone through the development stages of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Artillery Engineering College, East China Engineering College, and East China Institute of Technology. In 1993, it was renamed Nanjing University of Science and Technology. In 1995, the school became one of the first batch of key universities in the national "211 Project"; in 2000, it was approved to establish a graduate school; in 2011, it was approved to build a "985 Project Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform"; in 2017, the school was selected as a "Double First-Class" construction university, and the "Weapon Science and Technology" discipline was selected as a "Double First-Class" construction discipline; in 2018, Academician Wang Zeshan won the National Highest Science and Technology Award. In the same year, the school became a university jointly built by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Education, and Jiangsu Province. Entering a new era and embarking on a new journey, the school adheres to the school-running philosophy of "people-oriented, virtuous and knowledgeable", upholds the school motto of "improving morality and studying, and striving for innovation", and promotes the school spirit of "unity, dedication, truth-seeking, and innovation". The school has a complete range of disciplines and distinctive school characteristics. There are 20 professional colleges, including the School of Mechanical Engineering, the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, the School of Electronic Engineering and Optoelectronic Technology, the School of Computer Science and Engineering, the School of Economics and Management, the School of Energy and Power Engineering, the School of Automation, the School of Science, the School of Foreign Languages, the School of Public Affairs, the School of Marxism, the School of Materials Science and Engineering/Grete Institute, the School of Environment and Bioengineering, the School of Design, Art and Media, the School of Intellectual Property, the School of Cyberspace Security, the School of Intelligent Manufacturing, the School of New Energy, the School of Mathematics and Statistics, and the School of Microelectronics (Integrated Circuits). There are also the Qian Xuesen College, the Sino-French School of Engineers, the School of International Education, the School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education, and the School of Continuing Education. The school has co-founded two independent colleges, Nanjing University of Science and Technology Zijin College and Nanjing University of Science and Technology Taizhou Institute of Technology, with its partners. In the long-term development process, the school has formed three major advantageous disciplines, namely weapons and equipment, information and control, and chemical engineering and materials. Six disciplines, namely engineering, chemistry, materials science, computer science, environment and ecology, and physics, have entered the top 1% of the ESI international disciplines in the world, among which engineering has entered the top 1‰. There are 9 national key disciplines, 6 Jiangsu Province advantage disciplines, 12 Jiangsu Province key disciplines, 7 MIIT key disciplines, and 10 national defense characteristic disciplines; 25 national first-class undergraduate professional construction sites, 9 national characteristic majors, and 13 pilot majors of the Ministry of Education's Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program; 16 postdoctoral mobile stations; 20 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points, 35 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points; 2 doctoral professional degree authorization categories, 19 master's professional degree authorization categories; with the right to confer senior executives Master of Business Administration (EMBA); with the right to confer doctoral and master's degrees to in-service personnel with equivalent academic qualifications, and the right to recruit foreign students and students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. The school currently has more than 30,000 full-time students of various types and more than 1,000 international students.

The school has a strong faculty and a reasonable team structure. It has the right to review the qualifications of professors and the right to approve the qualifications of doctoral supervisors. There are more than 3,500 faculty and staff, more than 2,200 full-time teachers, including more than 1,500 with senior professional titles. There are more than 400 high-level talents, including: 25 academicians of the two academies, 4 foreign academicians, 56 national leading talents, 90 national young talents, 4 winners of the "National Teaching Master Award", 1 advanced individual of the first National Textbook Construction Award, 5 winners of the "National Innovation Award", 14 candidates for the "National Hundred Thousand Talents Project", 26 young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions at the national, provincial and ministerial levels, and 207 people enjoying special government subsidies from the State Council. There are 2 Huang Danian-style teacher teams in national universities, 5 national teaching teams, 5 innovation teams of the Ministry of Education, 3 research-based teaching innovation teams of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, 11 national defense science and technology innovation teams, and 34 Jiangsu Province innovation teams. The school has been selected as the "Jiangsu Province High-level Talent Innovation and Entrepreneurship Base", "National Innovation Talent Training Demonstration Base" and the first batch of Jiangsu Province Course Ideological and Political Demonstration Universities.

Over the past 60 years since its establishment, the university has trained and supplied nearly 300,000 senior professionals of various types for the country, with a national defense employment rate of 35%, of which 15 people were elected as academicians of the two academies. Since the 13th Five-Year Plan, it has won 5 national teaching achievement awards, 1 first prize of the Graduate Education Achievement Award of the China Association for Academic Degrees and Graduate Education, and 33 provincial and ministerial teaching achievement awards. The school's innovation and entrepreneurship education has achieved remarkable results. It has been approved as a national demonstration base for innovation and entrepreneurship. It is one of the first batch of "National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Typical Experience Universities" and "National Demonstration University for Deepening Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Reform". It is also a "China-US Youth Maker Exchange Center" and "National University Practice Education Innovation and Entrepreneurship Base" settled in the university; it has won many awards in major events such as the China "Internet +" College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the "Challenge Cup" National College Student Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition, and the China Graduate Innovation Practice Series Competition. It is at the leading level in the country in advanced launch, optoelectronic information, navigation and guidance, advanced materials and other scientific and technological fields. There are 1 national key laboratory, 1 national engineering technology research center, 1 national-local joint engineering laboratory, 1 frontier science center, 1 national technology research and promotion center, 1 national technology transfer demonstration institution, 1 national quality inspection center, 1 provincial and ministerial collaborative innovation center, 2 sub-centers of the National Defense Technology Innovation Center, 28 provincial and ministerial key laboratories, 26 provincial and ministerial engineering (technology) research centers, 13 provincial and ministerial philosophy and social science research bases, and a national university science and technology park. Based on this, a large number of major national scientific research tasks have been undertaken and a number of major original achievements have been produced. Since the 13th Five-Year Plan, 213 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards have been obtained, including 17 national science and technology awards (1 National Highest Science and Technology Award, 1 International Science and Technology Cooperation Award, 1 First Prize of the National Technological Invention Award, 3 First Prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 2 Second Prizes of the National Natural Science Award, 6 Second Prizes of the National Technological Invention Award, and 3 Second Prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award), achieving full coverage of the five major awards. The weapons and equipment developed by our school as the chief designer were unveiled at the military parade for the 70th anniversary of the founding of New China and were reviewed by the Party and the people of the whole country. The school vigorously promotes industry-university-research cooperation and promotes the transformation and application of major scientific and technological achievements. It has been recognized as the first batch of scientific and technological achievement transformation and technology transfer bases of higher education institutions and the first batch of national intellectual property demonstration universities, and has created significant economic and social benefits in emerging industries such as high-end equipment, new generation information technology, and new materials.

The school has active international exchanges and cooperation, and its influence is increasing. It vigorously promotes the process of internationalization of education and has established close cooperative relations with more than 150 well-known domestic and foreign universities and research institutions such as the University of Oxford in the UK, the University of Leuven in Belgium, the National University of Singapore, the Bauman State University of Technology in Russia, the University of Rochester in the United States, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany, and the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology in Russia. There are currently 8 national-level higher education discipline innovation and intelligence introduction bases, which have been selected as the World Intellectual Property Organization Technology and Innovation Support Center, and the Jiangsu International Intellectual Property College has been established. Cooperate with Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany to establish the Grete Nanotechnology Institute, co-build the Sino-French Engineering Institute with the National Engineering School of Metz in France, and establish a Sino-foreign cooperative education project with Coventry University in the UK. Actively respond to the "Belt and Road" initiative and co-build a Confucius Institute with Gomel State University in Belarus. Establish a Eurasian Research Institute, including the Saudi Research Center, the Belarus Research Center, and the Central and Eastern European Research Center. The Nanjing campus covers an area of ​​3,200 mu, with a total building area of ​​1.109 million square meters, a total fixed asset value of 5.23 billion yuan, a complete range of infrastructure, a sound logistics service system, and existing teaching and research equipment worth 2.17 billion yuan. The library has a collection of more than 2.8 million printed documents and more than 11 million electronic and digital document information resources. It mainly focuses on the improvement of core school functions. It is the main position for the school to inherit the school culture, build a solid foundation for development, and expand the influence of the school. It is the core campus that supports the school's talent training, scientific research and other undertakings. The Jiangyin campus covers an area of ​​1,115 mu, with a total building area of ​​320,000 square meters. It mainly focuses on the implementation of national strategies and internationalized schooling. Relying on local regional and industrial advantages, it is a pilot zone for building and serving the "two powerful countries", a pilot zone for cutting-edge interdisciplinary disciplines, and a demonstration zone for internationalized schooling. Xuyi Military-Civilian Integration Research and Experimental Base, Underwater Science Experimental Center and Industry-University-Research Cooperation Base are under construction, focusing on national defense science and technology innovation and achievement transformation, giving full play to local resource advantages, and is a functional campus with a scientific research and experimental base that deeply integrates land, sea, air, and information.
