Yancheng Normal University is a public undergraduate college under the jurisdiction of Jiangsu Province, located in the urban area of ​​Yancheng, a coastal open city in Jiangsu. The school was founded in 1958, and its predecessor was Yancheng Normal College and Yancheng Education College; in 2002, the national key technical secondary school Yancheng Commercial School was merged. The school currently has two campuses, Tongyu and Xinchang, with a campus area of ​​1,500 acres.

The school currently has more than 22,000 full-time undergraduate students, and has 18 secondary colleges, including the School of Arts, School of Law and Politics, School of Marxism, School of History and Public Administration, School of Foreign Languages, School of Music, School of Fine Arts and Design, School of Educational Sciences, School of Mathematics and Statistics, School of Physics and Electronic Engineering, School of Chemistry and Environmental Engineering, School of Ocean and Bioengineering, School of Pharmacy, School of Urban and Planning, School of Physical Education, School of Information Engineering, School of Business, and Wetland College.

The school currently has 73 undergraduate majors, including 14 teacher-training majors and 59 non-teacher-training majors. There are 6 national first-class undergraduate major construction majors, 3 national characteristic major construction points, 2 national comprehensive reform pilot majors, 6 national first-class undergraduate courses, 1 national boutique online open course, 2 national virtual simulation experiment projects, and 1 national off-campus practical education base for college students. There are 27 provincial first-class undergraduate professional construction majors, 10 provincial brand majors, 16 provincial characteristic majors, 1 provincial curriculum ideological and political demonstration major, 7 provincial key majors (categories), 27 provincial first-class undergraduate courses, 38 provincial online open courses, 1 provincial curriculum ideological and political construction demonstration course, 12 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, and 1 provincial key industry college. The School of Marxism was approved as a provincial college demonstration college of Marxism. The school is a national language and character standardization demonstration school, a national teacher training base, a provincial pilot school for excellent teachers and excellent engineers education and training programs, a provincial talent training model innovation experimental base, a provincial college student innovation and entrepreneurship practice education center, and a provincial international service outsourcing talent training base. It is the leading unit of the teaching consortium of universities in Yancheng designated by the Provincial Department of Education. The school is the first pilot university in Jiangsu Province and the country to accept full certification of secondary education. The school currently has 14 teacher training majors that have all passed the Ministry of Education's teacher training major certification (second level).

The school has 10 major disciplines including economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, management, and art. It has built 19 provincial and ministerial scientific research and innovation platforms. The Coastal Development Think Tank is one of the first 15 key think tanks in Jiangsu Province. In the past five years, the school has undertaken more than 320 projects at the provincial and ministerial levels, including more than 110 national projects, ranking among the top universities at the same level. It has won many high-level awards including the National Teaching Achievement Award, the National University Scientific Research Outstanding Achievement Award, the Jiangsu Science and Technology Award, and the Provincial Philosophy and Social Science Outstanding Achievement Award.

The school currently has more than 1,500 faculty and staff, including more than 600 senior professionals and more than 400 doctors. More than 160 teachers have been hired as doctoral or master's supervisors by universities such as Nanjing University and Wuhan University. There are 4 provincial key disciplines and 7 provincial outstanding scientific research innovation teams. The school has various outstanding talents, including those who enjoy special allowances from the State Council, famous teachers in Jiangsu Province, young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions in Jiangsu Province, training targets of Jiangsu Province's "333" project, funding targets of Jiangsu Province's "Six Talent Peaks" project, and training targets of young and middle-aged academic leaders and outstanding young backbone teachers in Jiangsu Province's colleges and universities' "Qinglan Project".

The school actively carries out extensive exchanges and cooperation, and has established friendly cooperative relations with 80 universities in countries such as the United Kingdom, Russia, South Korea, France, Australia and Taiwan, opened Sino-foreign cooperative education projects, promoted mutual recognition of credits and mutual granting of degrees, and carried out international education and cultural exchanges. It has jointly trained doctoral and master's students with universities such as Nanjing Normal University, Soochow University, Nanjing University of Technology, Hohai University, Tianjin Normal University, and Qinghai Normal University.

Students have achieved excellent results in various skill competitions across the country and the province. They have won the gold medal of the "Challenge Cup" National College Student Entrepreneurship Plan Competition for four consecutive times, the first prize in the 15th "Challenge Cup" National College Student Extracurricular Academic and Scientific Works Competition, and the silver medal of the "Internet +" National College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. They represented Jiangsu universities in the National College Sports Education Major Student Basic Skills Competition and won the first prize. They have won more than 210 first, second and third prizes in the Provincial Normal Students Teaching Basic Skills Competition. The employment rate of graduates is over 97%. Nearly 700 students are admitted to research institutes and universities such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing University, and Zhejiang University every year. They have been recognized as an advanced collective for employment of provincial college graduates for six consecutive times.

For many years, the school has insisted on playing the three cards of "normal, coastal, and old districts", taking service as its own responsibility and promoting development with contribution, strengthening the characteristics of running schools in serving regional economic and social development, creating core competitiveness, and improving the level of running schools. In 2007, the Ministry of Education's undergraduate teaching work level evaluation achieved excellent results, and in 2016, it passed the Ministry of Education's undergraduate teaching work review and evaluation with excellent results. The late young professor Wang Qiang of the school guarded the Marxist position with his life and was selected as a major national advanced model by the Central Propaganda Department. Bao Bin and Lu Yijun were elected as "China's Good People", won the nomination award for the seventh national moral model, and were elected as the "Helping Others" Jiangsu Provincial Moral Model.
