A Brief History: Qinghai Normal University is located in the ancient city of Xining on the plateau, which is the key to the Western Sea and the throat of Tibet. It was founded in 1956, initially named Qinghai Normal College, upgraded to Qinghai Normal University in 1958, and renamed Qinghai Normal University in 1984. After 1997, Qinghai Education College, Qinghai Ethnic Normal College, Qinghai Water Conservancy School, and Qinghai Banking School were successively merged to form the new Qinghai Normal University.

After 65 years of pioneering and enterprising efforts, the university has formed a complete education system with undergraduate education, graduate education, international student education, adult education, and vocational education. The disciplines and majors cover 10 major categories including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, management, and art. It is a comprehensive provincial key university with teacher education, ethnic education, and high-altitude regional characteristics, and coordinated development of multiple disciplines including arts, science, engineering, management, and law. The school has the qualification to recommend outstanding undergraduate graduates to pursue master's degree without examination. It is the first "National Civilized Campus", "Excellent Teacher Training Project Unit" of the Ministry of Education, "Demonstration University for Deepening Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Reform" of the Ministry of Education, "Demonstration Unit for National Unity and Progress Creation" of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, and a pilot university for cultivating high-level athletes nationwide.

Qinghai Normal University currently has two campuses in the west and north of the city, covering a total area of nearly 1500 acres. Among them, the Chengxi campus covers nearly 200 acres with a construction area of 130000 square meters. It is lush with greenery, quaint and elegant, and has a long academic history. It mainly undertakes the functions of graduate education, international student education, and continuing education and training. The Chengbei Campus covers an area of over 1300 acres, with a building area of 337100 square meters. It has advanced facilities, modern openness, and a magnificent layout. It was completed and put into use in October 2016, mainly responsible for undergraduate education and academic exchange functions. The two campuses have their own characteristics, complement each other, and develop in a coordinated manner, jointly forming a modern university campus with rich cultural connotations and showcasing the scenery of the plateau. It is an ideal place for reading, studying, and teaching, and an educational fertile ground.

Alumni have trained over 120000 graduates, giving rise to a large number of outstanding teaching experts, research scholars, management talents, and business elites. They have demonstrated the era's style of dedication, innovation, and pioneering spirit of Normal University students in various positions, making important contributions to the progress of human civilization, national and regional economic and social development.

There are 19081 students currently enrolled, including 11665 undergraduate students, 2636 master's students, 238 doctoral students, 22 international students, and 4520 correspondence students.

There are 4 doctoral degree authorization points for first level disciplines, 17 doctoral degree authorization points for second level disciplines, 21 master's degree authorization points for first level disciplines, 124 master's degree authorization points for second level disciplines, 10 professional master's degree authorization categories, and 2 postdoctoral research stations for Chinese history and geography. Approved 1 domestic first-class discipline, 3 provincial first-class disciplines, and 13 provincial key disciplines.

There are 61 undergraduate majors, including 4 national characteristic majors. 1 national level excellent course and 23 provincial level excellent courses. Approved 9 national first-class majors and 7 provincial first-class majors.

There are currently 1290 faculty members and 1033 professional and technical personnel. Among them, there are 169 senior professional titles, 389 deputy senior professional titles, 47 doctoral supervisors, 293 master's supervisors, 10 experts who enjoy special government allowances from the State Council, 1 young and middle-aged expert with outstanding contributions to the country, and 1 national level candidate for the Millions of Talents Project. We have one national level teaching team, one innovation team from the Ministry of Education, and nine provincial-level teaching teams. 5 people have been selected for the Ministry of Education's New Century Excellent Talents Program, 19 people have been selected as "Western Light" visiting scholars, 9 people have been selected as outstanding experts in Qinghai Province, 8 people have been selected as outstanding professional and technical talents in Qinghai Province, 40 people have been selected for the "135 High level Talent Training Project" talent plan in Qinghai Province, 228 people and 9 research teams have been selected for the "Kunlun Talents · High end Innovation and Entrepreneurship Talents" plan in Qinghai Province, and 4 teaching and research teams have been selected for the "Small Heights" talent construction project in Qinghai Province 6 times. The college currently has 19 colleges, including Ethnic Normal College, History College, Literature College, Journalism College, Education College, Law and Society College, Foreign Languages College, Marxism College, Life Sciences College, Geographic Sciences College, Physical Education College, Economics and Management College (Tourism College), Mathematics and Statistics College, Art College, Music College, Physics and Electronic Information Engineering College, Computer College, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering College, and Continuing Education and Training College.

The research institute (school) has three research institutions, including the Qinghai Provincial People's Government Beijing Normal University Institute of Plateau Science and Sustainable Development, the "Two Bombs and One Satellite" Spirit Research Institute, and the Qinghai Silk Road Economic Belt Research Institute. Each college has 29 research institutions, including the Qinghai Tibet Plateau Social History Research Center, the Panchen Lama Research Institute, the Qinghai Tibet Plateau Sports Science Research Institute, the Education Science Research Institute, and the Tibetan Information Research Center.

The platform currently has the "National Teacher Development Collaborative Innovation Experimental Base" of the Ministry of Education, the "Tibetan Chinese Bilingual Science Teacher Training Base" of the Ministry of Education, the "Collaborative Innovation Center for Tibetan History and Multi ethnic Prosperity Development Research" of the Ministry of Education, the "Tibetan Chinese Bilingual Talent Training Base" of the National Ethnic Affairs Commission, the Tibetan Chinese Bilingual Science Teacher Training Centers in five provinces and regions, the Qinghai Branch of the National Qinghai Tibet Plateau Science Data Center, and the Plateau Energy Industry and Ecology Research Center. It has been awarded the title of "Qinghai Base for the Second National Comprehensive Scientific Expedition to the Qinghai Tibet Plateau". There are 13 provincial key laboratories, including the State Key Laboratory of Tibetan Intelligent Information Processing and Application jointly built by the province and the ministry, the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education for Surface Processes and Ecological Conservation of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau, the Key Laboratory of Qinghai Tibetan Plateau Medicinal Animal and Plant Resources, the Key Laboratory of Qinghai Natural Geography and Environmental Processes, the Tibetan Information Processing and Machine Translation Laboratory, the Key Laboratory of the Qinghai Internet of Things, and the Key Laboratory of Biodiversity Formation Mechanism and Comprehensive Utilization of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau. There are six provincial-level humanities and social science research centers, including the Qinghai Ethnic Education Development Research Center, Qinghai Provincial Student Mental Health Education Consultation and Training Center, Qinghai Tibet Plateau Culture Research Institute, and four national and provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, including the "National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Physics".

Has undertaken over 800 national, provincial, and ministerial level scientific research projects, including 2 national "863" projects and 3 national major basic research projects "973". The school, as the first completion unit, won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award for its research on Tibetan computer keyboards and input coding methods, as well as its collaborative completion units for three research achievements: "Innovation and Application of Grassland Ecological Restoration and Sustainable Management Technologies in the Three River Source Area" and "Research and Application of Key Technologies for Comprehensive Natural Disaster Risk Assessment and Major Natural Disaster Response". The school, as the first completion unit, has won the first prize for scientific and technological progress in Qinghai Province for its achievements in the "Maqin Tibetan Platform, Font Library, and Tibetan Chinese English Electronic Dictionary" and "Key Technologies and Application Demonstration of Tibetan Chinese (Han Tibetan) Machine Translation", as well as the "Research and Application of Ecological Hydrological Processes and Wetland Restoration Technology in Qinghai Lake Basin" as a cooperative completion unit. The theories and practices of national level teaching team building, the application of commercial law in legal teaching reform, the exploration and innovation of comprehensive reform of Chinese minority language and literature (Tibetan language and literature) major, and the construction of a social work talent training and practical teaching system driven by innovation have won the provincial teaching achievement award.

The cultural and sports school has deeply explored the red educational resources rooted in the land of Qinghai and the new Qinghai spirit. It has established the "Two Bombs, One Satellite" Spirit Research Institute and the "Two Bombs, One Satellite" Spirit Exhibition Hall, and created the play "Song of Everlasting Love" to promote the "Two Bombs, One Satellite" spirit. It won the "Excellent Performance Drama Award" at the 6th National Campus Drama Festival and was selected as a featured exhibition project of "Respecting Excellent Traditional Chinese Culture" in the 5th National Universities. It has formed a new pattern of patriotic education with "one hospital, one museum, one drama" and has become an important innovative carrier and campus cultural brand for ideological and political education of college students in the new era. The characteristics of high-altitude sports education and training are outstanding. Li Chunxiu, a student from the School of Literature, won the bronze medal in the women's 10km race walk at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Xie Yangshi, a student from the School of Physical Education, won the gold medal in the women's 20km race walk at the 2012 London Olympics. Yin Shunjin won the gold medal in the marathon race at the 12th National Games in 2013. The school's high-level women's basketball team has won the championship of the Northwest Division of the CUBA (National University Basketball League) 18 times and the runner up of CUBA 3 times, the championship of the National University Super League 1 time and the runner up of 2 times, the runner up of the National University Games 1 time and the third place of 2 times, and won the championship of the 2010 World University Basketball Games and the third place of the 2017 World University Basketball League Finals. It is a well-known basketball powerhouse in universities across the country and has made outstanding contributions to the development of sports in the country and Qinghai Province. The cooperative schools vigorously promote domestic and international cooperation in a wide range of fields and channels, establish "team style" counterpart support cooperation relationships with Beijing Normal University, Shandong University, Lanzhou University, Huazhong Normal University, Shaanxi Normal University, and reach strategic cooperation agreements with Capital Normal University, Beijing Sport University, Southern University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen University, Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, Northwest Normal University, Yunnan Normal University, Inner Mongolia Normal University, Jiangsu Normal University and other universities. The affiliated school has four affiliated experimental middle schools (including primary school, junior high school, and high school stages) and one affiliated experimental kindergarten. Among them, the affiliated experimental middle school, affiliated experimental second middle school, and affiliated experimental third middle school cover a total area of 231.67 acres, with a total of 498 teachers and 7143 students. They are all provincial-level first-class schools with 12 years of continuous education, and are an important force in promoting the development of basic education in Qinghai and an important practical training base for teacher training.
