『History』

In 1924, Xinjiang Russian Law and Politics School, the predecessor of Xinjiang University, was founded, marking the beginning of higher education in Xinjiang.

In 1935, the school was rebuilt into Xinjiang College. During the Anti-Japanese War, Communists Yu Xiusong, Lin Jilu and patriotic democratic figure Du Chongyuan successively went to Xinjiang College to preside over the work. A group of Communists and progressive figures such as Mao Dun, Zhang Zhongshi, Sa Kongliao and Zhao Dan came to the school to teach or give lectures. They put forward the educational thought of "taking ethnicity as the form and Marxism-Leninism as the content", and launched a vigorous propaganda campaign against Japanese aggression and national salvation. The school was hailed as the "Second Anti-Japanese University".

In 1950, the People's Government of Xinjiang Province merged the former Provincial Language and Literature College into Xinjiang College and renamed Xinjiang College to Xinjiang Nationalities College. In 1954, Xinjiang Nationalities College was renamed Xinjiang College.

In 1955, when Yang Xiufeng, Minister of Higher Education, visited Xinjiang College to inspect its work, he instructed to build Xinjiang University based on Xinjiang College. In May 1959, the Ministry of Higher Education decided that Peking University, Tsinghua University, Northwest University and other institutions would support the establishment of Xinjiang University. In 1960, Xinjiang University was formally established, and the school entered a new period of development.

In 1978, the school was identified by the State Council as one of the first batch of 88 key colleges and universities in the country and one of the 16 comprehensive key universities. In 1997, the school was included in the first batch of key universities in the national "211 Project".

In 2000, Xinjiang University merged with the former Xinjiang Institute of Technology to form the new Xinjiang University. The predecessor of the former Xinjiang Institute of Technology was the Sino-Soviet Nonferrous Metals Company Mining Technology School jointly founded by China and the Soviet Union in 1953. In 1954, the Soviet Union transferred the school's shares to my country, and the school was changed to self-run and renamed Urumqi Mining School. In 1958, Xinjiang Mining and Metallurgy Institute was established and affiliated to the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry. In 1966, it was renamed Xinjiang Institute of Technology.

In 2004, the school became a "region-ministerial co-construction" university of the People's Government of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and the Ministry of Education. In 2012, the school was listed as a construction university of the national "central and western colleges and universities comprehensive strength improvement project". In 2017, it entered the ranks of the first 42 first-class universities in the country. In 2018, it was determined to be a "ministerial co-construction" university of the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

『Discipline and professional settings』

The school currently has nine disciplines, including economics, law, literature, history, science, engineering, management, art, and philosophy, covering the main fields of senior professional talent training and scientific research. There are 2 national key disciplines (Chinese ethnic minority languages ​​and literature, applied mathematics), 1 national key cultivation discipline (population, resources and environmental economics), 3 double first-class key construction disciplines (Marxist theory, chemistry, computer science and technology); 6 autonomous region-level peak disciplines, 7 autonomous region plateau disciplines, and 3 disciplines (chemistry, engineering, and materials science) are among the top 1% in the world of ESI; in the fourth round of national discipline evaluation, 7 disciplines entered Class B disciplines and 9 disciplines entered Class C disciplines. There are 14 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 1 doctoral professional degree authorization category, 36 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, 18 master's professional degree authorization categories, and 12 postdoctoral research mobile stations. It is the university with the most degree authorizations and the most complete degree authorization system among Xinjiang universities. The school currently has 95 undergraduate majors, including 69 enrollment majors; 29 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 9 provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 10 national characteristic majors, 18 autonomous region shortage talent majors, and 12 autonomous region key majors.

『Scientific Research』

In the past three years, Xinjiang University has an average annual research funding of 233 million yuan, undertaken 1,495 scientific research projects of various types, undertaken 25 major key projects such as national key R&D projects, NSFC-Xinjiang Joint Fund key projects, and major bidding projects of the National Social Science Fund, and undertaken 759 horizontal projects commissioned by enterprises and institutions, including 39 horizontal projects with a total investment of more than one million yuan. 6,521 academic papers have been published, of which 2,609 have been included in SCI, SSCI, EI, and ISTP. 68 scientific research awards at the provincial and ministerial levels or above have been won.

『Teaching and Research Platform』

The school currently has 45 scientific research platforms (teams) at or above the provincial and ministerial level in science and engineering, including 1 national key laboratory jointly built by the Ministry of Science and Technology, 1 national key laboratory cultivation base jointly built by the Ministry of Science and Technology, and 1 international science and technology cooperation research base; 1 collaborative innovation center jointly built by the Ministry of Education; 3 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, 14 key laboratories of the autonomous region; 1 engineering research center and 1 information technology research center of the Ministry of Education, 6 engineering technology research centers of the autonomous region, and 1 research center of the autonomous region people's government; 1 field scientific observation and research station of the Ministry of Education; 1 innovation team in key areas of the Ministry of Science and Technology, 4 innovation teams of the Ministry of Education, and 9 innovation teams of Tianshan Mountains of the autonomous region.

The school currently has 14 scientific research platforms at or above the provincial and ministerial level in humanities and social sciences. Among them, the four ministries jointly established 1 research base for forging a strong sense of community of the Chinese nation, 1 key research base of the Ministry of Education for humanities and social sciences, and 10 key research bases of the autonomous region for humanities and social sciences; 1 collaborative innovation center jointly built by the Ministry of Education and the provinces.

『Number of students』

The school currently has 34,792 students of all types, including 21,604 undergraduates, 12,143 postgraduates, 881 doctoral students, and 164 international students.

『Teaching staff』

The school currently has 1,979 full-time teachers, 942 full-time teachers with senior professional titles, and 914 teachers with doctoral degrees. There is currently 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 20 people selected for national talent projects, 5 young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions to the country, 39 experts enjoying special government allowances, 1 "National Huang Danian-style Teacher Team for Colleges and Universities", 8 people in the "New Century Excellent Talent Support Program" of the Ministry of Education, 1 national teaching model, and 1 cultural celebrity of the Central Propaganda Department and one of the four batches (young talents in propaganda, ideology and culture). There are 17 outstanding experts with outstanding contributions in the autonomous region, 6 cultural celebrities and "four batches" talents and cultural industry leaders in the autonomous region, 9 people in the autonomous region's "National High-level Talent Special Support Program", 26 autonomous region-level teaching masters, and 18 teaching experts.

『Exchange and Cooperation』

The school is the acceptance unit of the National Scholarship Council's public study abroad program, and is a school for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization University, Chinese Government Scholarship Independent Enrollment, Confucius Institute Scholarship and Xinjiang Government Scholarship Project. The school has signed educational exchange and scientific research cooperation agreements (memorandums) with more than 80 universities and educational research institutions in 27 countries and regions. It has established the Xinjiang University Russian Center and the Russian Foreign Language Level Examination Center, and has internship bases in many universities in Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and other countries. 3 Confucius Institutes have been established in Kyrgyzstan and Russia.

Since the launch of a new round of targeted support work in 2010, with the strong support of the Ministry of Education, 15 universities, led by Tsinghua University, with Xi'an Jiaotong University, Wuhan University, Central South University, and Renmin University of China as deputy leaders, and Beijing Normal University, Dalian University of Technology, Tongji University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Donghua University, China University of Mining and Technology, Sun Yat-sen University, Northeast Normal University, Xiamen University, and University of Electronic Science and Technology of China as members, have provided targeted support to Xinjiang University. In addition, Tianjin University, East China University of Science and Technology, and Beijing University of Chemical Technology have established targeted cooperation with our school.

『School Conditions』

Xinjiang University currently has three campuses, namely Honghu Campus, Youhao Campus, and Boda Campus. Among them, the Boda Campus, located in Hemaquan New District, Shuimogou District, was officially opened in October 2021, covering an area of ​​3,709 acres. The library is a provincial central library of the China Higher Education Document Assurance System (CALIS), with a total of 3.465 million books and documents. The campus network and CERNET Xinjiang regional main node and Xinjiang education regional network control center and Urumqi education metropolitan area network have been built. It has a modern digital library and a first-class multi-functional gymnasium in the northwest region.
