Shanxi Medical University

The predecessor of Shanxi Medical University was Shanxi Medical Training Institute, which was founded in the ancient city of Bingzhou in 1919. In 1932, it was changed to the private Shanxi Chuanzhi Medical College. In 1940, it was renamed Shanxi University Medical College. In 1946, it was upgraded to the National Shanxi University Medical College. After the founding of New China, the school entered a new period of development. In 1953, it was established as an independent school and renamed Shanxi Medical College. In 1996, it was renamed Shanxi Medical University.

The school is the third batch of doctoral degree-granting institutions in the country and the first batch of master's degree-granting institutions in Shanxi Province, the first batch of bachelor's degree-granting institutions in the country, the first batch of pilot units of the "Excellent Doctor Education and Training Program" of the Ministry of Education, one of the 25 medical schools in the country that offer seven-year clinical medicine majors, one of the first eight medical schools in the country that restore undergraduate pediatric majors, and a university supported by the National Central and Western College Basic Capacity Construction Project.

After 103 years of construction and development, the school has become a medical university with medicine as the main focus, combining medicine and engineering, medicine and science, medicine and literature, and medicine and management, and has a complete talent training system with undergraduate education as the main focus and undergraduate, master and doctoral levels, forming the school motto of "extensive medical science, high moral ability", the school spirit of "dedication, pragmatism, unity and enterprising" and the spirit of "truth-seeking, diligence, tenacity and perseverance".

The school currently has three campuses in Chuanzhi, Yingze and Zhongdu, covering a total area of ​​1,422 acres and a construction area of ​​710,000 square meters. There are 33 teaching institutions including the First Clinical Medical College, the Second Clinical Medical College, the Third Clinical Medical College, the Basic Medical College, the School of Public Health, the School of Pharmacy, the School of Forensic Medicine, and the School of Nursing, 15 directly affiliated hospitals including the First Hospital, the Second Hospital, the Third Hospital, the Stomatological Hospital, the Mental Health Hospital, and the Pulmonary Hospital, 6 non-directly affiliated hospitals, 35 teaching hospitals, 122 other teaching bases, 15 postgraduate training bases, and 2 scientific research bases.

The school currently has more than 7,000 teaching and medical staff, more than 2,000 postgraduate tutors, and more than 2,200 clinical teachers. The school currently has 8 national first-class undergraduate professional construction points - clinical medicine, preventive medicine, forensic medicine, pharmacy, nursing, anesthesiology, stomatology, medical laboratory technology. 5 national characteristic professional construction points. Clinical medicine (five-year system), clinical medicine (rural targeted free students), and nursing majors are the first batch of national "undergraduate teaching project" of the Ministry of Education. The local college undergraduate major comprehensive reform pilot majors. The school has 32 undergraduate majors, including clinical medicine (five-year system, "5+3" integrated), preventive medicine, forensic medicine, stomatology, pediatrics, medical imaging, anesthesiology, nursing, psychiatry, optometry, and pharmacy.

The school's students come from all provinces, cities, and autonomous regions across the country. There are currently 21,745 full-time students, including 14,943 ordinary undergraduates, 5,748 master's students, 509 doctoral students, and 545 international students. Since 2019, our students have won the gold medal in the main track project of the China International "Internet+" College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition for three consecutive years. It is the only medical undergraduate university in the country to have won this honor. Since its establishment, the school has trained more than 130,000 medical and health professionals represented by Zhao Xuefang, the first winner of the "Bethune Medal" in the country and the "People's Good Doctor", Xu Jianguo and Tian Zhigang, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Yang Hui, winner of the Nightingale Medal.

The school's scientific research development momentum is good. In 2021, the total science and technology funding reached 206 million yuan; 598 science and technology plan projects above the provincial level were undertaken, including 65 National Natural Science Foundation projects (including 1 key project, 1 international cooperation key project, and 4 regional joint fund key projects), 1 National Key R&D Program project, and 1 National Social Science Foundation project; more than 4,600 scientific research papers were published, including more than 1,300 papers included in SCI; 402 patents were authorized; and 50 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards were won.

The school actively carries out international exchanges and cooperation. It has established cooperative relations with universities and institutions in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Japan, Russia, Australia, Greece, Switzerland and other countries; implemented the "Overseas Training Program for Young Backbone Teachers" and "Overseas Training Program for Doctoral Students", and carried out projects such as "1+1+1 Joint Training for Master's Students"; and widely carried out teacher-student exchanges and international scientific research cooperation.

The school has been passed down for a hundred years, and several generations have worked hard and achieved brilliant achievements. The school will seize the development opportunities such as the national "Double First-Class" construction and the implementation of Shanxi's "1331" project, the construction of Healthy China and Healthy Shanxi, and the comprehensive reform of medical education, inherit the fine traditions, accelerate the pace of construction, and strive to build a distinctive high-level research and teaching medical university as soon as possible.
