Dalian University of Technology

Founded in 1958, Dalian Polytechnic University is one of the four earliest light industry colleges in my country. It was originally affiliated to the Ministry of Light Industry. In 1998, it was transformed into a system of joint construction by the central and local governments and management by Liaoning Province. In March 2007, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the school was renamed Dalian Polytechnic University from Dalian Institute of Light Industry. Over the past half century, the school has gradually developed into a higher education institution with engineering as the main focus, coordinated development of six major disciplines of engineering, science, art, literature, management, and economics, and the training of professional talents in food, light industry, textiles, art, etc. as its school-running characteristics.

The school currently has three first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, namely, food science and engineering, light industry technology and engineering, and textile science and engineering, two postdoctoral research mobile stations, 14 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, and 8 master's professional degree authorization categories; the school was selected as one of the first batch of "Double First-Class" key construction universities in Liaoning Province, and three first-level disciplines, namely, food science and engineering, light industry technology and engineering, and textile science and engineering, were selected as key construction disciplines of first-class disciplines in Liaoning Province. At the end of 2021, the doctoral program of the second-level discipline "Food Safety and Quality Management Engineering" independently established by the school based on the first-level discipline of food science and engineering was successfully filed and approved by the Degree Center of the Ministry of Education, becoming the first second-level discipline doctoral degree authorization point in the country in this field.

The school has 15 colleges (departments), 54 general undergraduate majors, 3 Sino-foreign cooperative undergraduate majors, and 3 undergraduate majors taught in English (study abroad in China). Among them, the school was approved as one of the first batch of pilot majors for comprehensive reform of undergraduate majors in local universities in the national "Undergraduate Teaching Project", and 3 majors passed the engineering education certification of the Ministry of Education. The school currently has 7 pilot majors of the "Excellence Plan" of the Ministry of Education, 4 national characteristic major construction sites, 9 national first-class major construction sites, Liaoning Province characteristic majors, Liaoning Province advantage characteristic majors, Liaoning Province transformation demonstration majors, Liaoning Province key support majors, Liaoning Province comprehensive reform pilot majors, Liaoning Province engineering talent training model reform pilot majors, Liaoning Province innovation and entrepreneurship education reform pilot majors, Liaoning Province first-class undergraduate education demonstration majors, a total of 53. The school has the qualification to recommend outstanding undergraduate graduates to study for a master's degree without examination. There are more than 13,000 full-time undergraduate students and more than 3,000 graduate students in the school, and more than 500 foreign students are enrolled each year.

The school currently has 846 full-time teachers, 516 professors and associate professors, 73 doctoral supervisors, and 945 master supervisors. The school has 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 person who won the honorary title of the 6th National Outstanding Professional and Technical Talent, 2 people who won the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund, 1 Excellent Youth Science Fund, 26 experts who enjoy the special government allowance of the State Council; nearly 100 people were selected for provincial talent projects such as the "Xingliao Talent Plan"; 5 professional leaders of ordinary colleges and universities in Liaoning Province, and 20 famous teachers in Liaoning Province.

The university has a total of 74 research platforms at or above the municipal level, including three national platforms such as the National Marine Food Engineering Technology Research Center, the National and Local Joint Engineering Laboratory for the Development and Application of Marine Active Polysaccharides, and the National and Local Joint Engineering Laboratory for Biocatalysis Technology, the Liaoning Marine Food Deep Processing Key Technology Co-construction Collaborative Innovation Center, the Ministry of Agriculture Agricultural Product Processing Quality and Safety Risk Assessment Laboratory, the International Science and Technology Cooperation Base for Deep Processing of Sea Treasures, the Shellfish Professional Sub-center for Agricultural Product Processing Technology Research and Development, the National Technology Transfer Demonstration Institution Dalian University of Technology Technology Transfer Center, the National Small and Medium Enterprises Public Service Demonstration Platform, and the Ministry of Science and Technology Innovative Talent Promotion Plan Innovative Talent Training Demonstration Base and other 7 relevant ministries and commissions research platforms, as well as 32 Liaoning Provincial Research Platforms and 32 Dalian Municipal Research Platforms.

The university adheres to the principle of giving equal importance to basic research and applied research. In the past five years, it has undertaken 171 national projects such as the National Key R&D Program Project, the National Natural Science Foundation Project, the National Social Science Foundation Project, and the National Art Fund; published 4,886 research papers, including 2,380 high-quality academic papers; and applied for 889 national invention patents. Since 2001, the school has won 182 national, provincial (ministerial) and municipal science and technology awards, including the second prize of the National Technological Invention Award in 2003 and 2005, the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2010, 2015 and 2018, the Science and Technology Innovation Award of the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation in 2008, the Dalian Science and Technology Merit Award in 2009, and the first prize of the Technology Invention Award of the Outstanding Scientific Research Achievement Award of Higher Education Institutions in 2021.

The school is guided by the national strategy of serving the revitalization of the old industrial base in Northeast China, takes serving the development of Liaoning's "five major strategies" as the main line, promotes the construction of the regional innovation system, takes the lead in establishing the Liaoning Light Industry Textile Industry School-Enterprise Alliance, and establishes the Liaoning Higher Education Light Industry Textile Technology Research Institute to build a platform for serving regional economic and social development. The school has national and provincial technology transfer demonstration institutions, with the basic positioning of serving Liaoning and facing the whole country, actively promoting the deep integration of school and local government, school and enterprise, and promoting the transformation of scientific and technological achievements.

The Journal of Dalian Polytechnic University, sponsored by the school, is a Chinese core journal, a Chinese science and technology core journal, a RCCSE Chinese core academic journal (A-), and a Liaoning Provincial First-Class Journal. It has won awards such as China's Excellent Science and Technology Journal, China's Characteristic Science and Technology Journal, the National University Science and Technology Journal Excellent Editor Quality Award, and Liaoning Province University Excellent Science and Technology Journal. It is included in important domestic and foreign databases and retrieval institutions such as the American Chemical Abstracts (Online Edition) and the China Academic Journal Network Publishing Library.

The school attaches great importance to the quality of talent training. In 2012, the school was approved as the second batch of pilot schools for the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" of the Ministry of Education; in 2014, it was approved as the first batch of pilot schools for the "Excellent Agriculture and Forestry Education and Training Program" of the Ministry of Education; in 2016, it was approved as the second batch of pilot universities for transformation and development in Liaoning Province and the "College Student Engineering Training Innovation Center" industry-education integration development project planning project; in 2017, it was approved as a Liaoning Province Transformation Demonstration University and Liaoning Province Higher Education Training Base; in 2018, it was approved as the "Dalian City Innovation and Entrepreneurship Practice Education Base" and won the title of "National Deepening Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Reform Characteristic Typical Experience University" issued by the China Higher Education Society. In 2019, the school was shortlisted for the top 100 universities in China's university entrepreneurship competitiveness, and only three universities in Liaoning Province were on the list. In 2021, the school was approved to register the "Dalian City Public Innovation Space". In 2022, the school was approved as the first round of Liaoning Province's "Three-dimensional Education" Comprehensive Reform and Opening-up Base. The school is a national-level art design ecological teaching system talent training model innovation experimental zone, a key construction of Liaoning Province's scarce undergraduate talent training base and art design talent training base. In recent years, the school has undertaken 406 national and provincial teaching reform projects, won 2 second prizes for national teaching achievements, 113 provincial teaching achievement awards, and built 3 national engineering practice education centers, 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center, and 1 national virtual simulation experimental teaching project. The school currently has 47 Liaoning Provincial College Student Practice Education Base, Liaoning Provincial College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Base, Liaoning Provincial Entrepreneurship Project Selection and Breeding Base, Liaoning Provincial Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, Liaoning Provincial Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center, Liaoning Provincial Professional Degree Graduate Joint Training Demonstration Base, Liaoning Provincial Graduate Innovation and Academic Exchange Center, and Dalian University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Practice Education Base. There are more than 100 national and provincial quality courses and first-class courses, including 3 national first-class courses, 1 national quality video open course, 69 provincial first-class courses, and 13 provincial quality video open courses and provincial quality resource sharing courses. 1 national-level high-quality textbook, 9 provincial-level high-quality textbook awards, 8 provincial-level textbook construction awards, 8 excellent textbooks of the China Light Industry Federation, 11 national-level "12th Five-Year Plan" textbooks, 29 provincial-level "12th Five-Year Plan" textbooks, 10 China Light Industry "14th Five-Year Plan" textbooks, and 3 China Light Industry "14th Five-Year Plan" digitalization projects. In 2021, "Aquatic Product Processing Technology" edited by Academician Zhu Beiwei won the second prize of the first National Textbook Construction Award (Higher Education). The school has 1 national-level teaching team, 1 national-level "Huang Danian-style" teacher team, 5 provincial-level teaching teams, 2 provincial-level "Huang Danian-style" teacher teams, and 4 provincial college innovation teams. The School of Fashion was rated as one of the top ten fashion schools in China and an advanced collective in the national education system.

The school received excellent results in the evaluation of undergraduate teaching work by the Ministry of Education in 2005; in 2006, the school was identified as the first batch of "Liaoning Province University Student Entrepreneurship Education Demonstration School"; in 2008, 24 students were selected as etiquette guides for the Beijing Olympic Games, the university with the largest number of selected students in the country; in November 2018, the school completed the undergraduate review and evaluation work. In recent years, our school has hosted national and provincial competitions such as the National College Student Market Research and Analysis Competition, Liaoning Province College Student Big Data Application and Analysis Competition, Liaoning Province College Student Industrial Design Competition, Liaoning Province College Student Rural Ecological Livable Environment Design Competition, Liaoning Province College Student Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection College Student Science and Technology Innovation Competition, Liaoning Province College Student Entrepreneurship Enterprise Management Simulation Sand Table Competition, Liaoning Province Graduate Student Marine Food Innovation Competition, etc. Students have achieved many excellent results in large-scale competitions such as the National Robot Competition, the National "Freescale" Smart Car Competition, the National Internet Business Innovation Competition, the National College Student Innovation Method Competition, the National College Student Advertising Design Competition, the National College Student Computer Design Competition, the National "Challenge Cup" College Student Entrepreneurship Plan Competition, the National College Student Mathematical Modeling Competition, the National College Student Electronic Design Competition, the China College Student Clothing Model Competition, and the Liaoning Province College Student Mechanical Design Competition.

The school continues to promote the internationalization of education. To build the "Study Abroad in Gongda" brand, it has been approved for the Liaoning Provincial Government Scholarship Project, the Chinese Government Scholarship Project, the Chinese Government Scholarship "Silk Road Project", the Chinese Government Scholarship "Consultation Project", the Chinese Government Scholarship "University Graduate Project" and the qualification of a college for cultivating students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. It has opened three undergraduate majors taught entirely in English to attract excellent international students to study in China. During the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" period, the number of long-term and short-term international students enrolled reached 2,500, and the source countries covered 51 countries. The proportion of degree-seeking students studying in China has increased year by year, and the student hierarchy has gradually become reasonable, forming a training system for undergraduate, master and doctoral students studying in China.

With the approval of the Ministry of Education, the school cooperated with the University of Southampton in the UK in 2011 to organize undergraduate Sino-foreign cooperative education programs in visual communication design and clothing and apparel design. In 2019, it cooperated with Glyndwr University in the UK to organize undergraduate Sino-foreign cooperative education programs in mechanical and electronic engineering. It introduced international high-quality educational resources, promoted the school's development in talent training, discipline and professional construction, faculty team construction, scientific research, and cultivated a large number of international talents needed for service industries and local development.

The school has carried out exchanges and cooperation with 107 universities in countries and regions such as the United States, Britain, France, and Japan. It has carried out inter-school exchange undergraduate "2+2" projects, undergraduate "3+1" projects, graduate "2+1" projects, graduate "1+1+1" projects, undergraduate and master's degree programs, short-term exchange student programs, and national government-sponsored study abroad programs with many internationally renowned universities such as Iowa State University in the United States, Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts Nord-Palais in France, Ritsumeikan University in Japan, and Hokuriku Institute of Technology in Japan. During the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" period, the number of students participating in various exchange programs totaled more than 800. In the past five years, the school has been approved for 7 national high-end intellectual introduction projects and more than 20 provincial and municipal intellectual introduction projects. In 2022, the school successfully obtained approval and carried out the Ministry of Education's international industry-university-research-application cooperation joint training graduate student project, opening up a new way to cultivate international graduate students.

After continuous development and historical accumulation, the school has formed the school motto of "extensive learning, careful thinking, and sincere practice to innovate". It has made positive contributions to the country and provinces and cities in terms of talent training, scientific research, cultural heritage, social services, and international exchanges.
