Dalian Jiaotong University is the only university in Northeast China that features rail transit. In 1956, the school was established to meet the development needs of my country's railway locomotive and vehicle industry. At that time, it was Dalian Locomotive and Vehicle Manufacturing School. In 1958, it was upgraded to Dalian Railway Institute and was under the management of the former Ministry of Railways. In February 2000, it was transferred to the management of the Liaoning Provincial Government. In May 2004, it was renamed Dalian Jiaotong University.

In the long history of running schools, the school has always adhered to the mission of the university, insisted on serving the regional economy and society, the development of the rail transit industry and the national strategic needs, formed the "strict and practical, tenacious and persistent" Datie spirit, "Mingde Seeking, Perseverance" school motto, and trained more than 100,000 graduates. Most of the graduates are employed in the rail transit industry, and some have become industry leaders and core technical backbones. They enjoy the reputation of "Cradle of Engineers in China's Rail Transit Equipment Manufacturing Industry" in the industry.

The school currently has two campuses, Shahekou Campus and Lushunkou Campus, covering a total area of ​​821,000 square meters and a total building area of ​​541,000 square meters. The total value of teaching and scientific research equipment is 396 million yuan, the total amount of library document resources is 1.3105 million volumes, 1.5117 million electronic books, and 27,427 Chinese and foreign electronic journals.

The school has the right to confer doctoral, master's and bachelor's degrees, and is a key university for the construction of first-class disciplines in Liaoning Province. The two disciplines of mechanical engineering and materials science and engineering are first-class disciplines in Liaoning Province's colleges and universities; the three disciplines of mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering, and transportation engineering are provincial key disciplines. It has two postdoctoral research stations in mechanical engineering and materials science and engineering, two first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 13 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, 6 master's professional degree authorization categories, 49 undergraduate majors, and 10 five-year double majors, covering seven disciplines including engineering, management, literature, science, economics, law, and art. At present, there are 18,074 full-time students, including 15,157 undergraduates and 2,917 master's and doctoral students.

The school has the qualification to recommend outstanding undergraduate graduates to study for postgraduates without examination. It is the second batch of colleges and universities implementing the Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program of the Ministry of Education, the National Software Talent International Training (Dalian) Base, the National Talent Training Model Innovation Experimental Zone, the National Construction of High-level Sports Team Colleges and Sports Culture Research Base, the Liaoning Province Vehicle Engineering Shortage Undergraduate Talent Training Base, the Liaoning Province Service Outsourcing Talent Training Base for Japan and the Dalian Northeast Asia International Shipping Talent Training Base. In October 2006, the school passed the evaluation of the undergraduate teaching work level of the Ministry of Education with an "excellent" result. The school currently has 12 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 2 national comprehensive reform pilot majors, 5 pilot majors of the Ministry of Education's Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program, and 5 China Engineering Education Certification Majors; 6 provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 42 provincial first-class undergraduate education demonstration majors, characteristic majors, key support majors, application-oriented transformation majors, and innovation and entrepreneurship education reform pilot construction sites. It has 1 national virtual simulation experimental teaching center and 4 national engineering practice education centers; 17 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers and 14 provincial off-campus practice education bases for college students; 35 provincial-level undergraduate boutique courses and 61 provincial-level first-class courses. In the past three years, students have won 1,314 national and provincial science and technology competition awards, including 18 national first prizes.

The school currently has 968 full-time teachers, including 169 professors and 324 associate professors. Teachers with master's and doctoral degrees account for about 90% of the total number of teachers. The school is a national advanced unit for industry-university-research cooperation and an innovation base for industry-university-research cooperation in Liaoning Province. The "China Rail Transit Equipment Manufacturing Innovation Alliance" was initiated and established, and the "Liaoning Rail Transit Industry School-Enterprise Alliance" and "Continuous Extrusion Industry Innovation Alliance" were established. There are 39 national, provincial and ministerial science and technology platforms, social science bases, think tanks, etc., including the National University Science and Technology Park, the National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center, the Ministry of Education Engineering Center, the National Technology Transfer Demonstration Institution, and the Liaoning Higher Education Industry Research Institute. Since 2016, the school has undertaken or participated in 76 national projects such as the National Key R&D Program, the National Natural Science Foundation, and the National Social Science Foundation, and has been approved for 646 provincial and ministerial projects; 21 awards at the provincial and ministerial levels or above; published more than 2,000 high-level papers, published 206 academic works, and obtained 358 authorized invention patents.

The school is a Chinese government scholarship for international students in China and an experimental base for innovative talent training in the 121 project of the "China-US Talent Training Program". It has established inter-school cooperation with more than 100 colleges and educational research institutions in 23 countries and regions such as Australia, the United States, Japan, and Russia. The school was approved by the Ministry of Education to establish a Sino-foreign cooperatively-run institution - Dalian Jiaotong University School of Transportation. It has three Sino-foreign cooperatively-run undergraduate education programs and has built the Dalian Talent Training Center for Sino-Japanese Friendship.

The school is an advanced unit for summer social practice for college students nationwide. It has won the Outstanding Organization Award twice in the National College Students Art Exhibition and Performance Activities. Two achievements, including the "Hundreds of Millions of Young Marxists Training Project", were rated as outstanding achievements in the construction of campus culture in colleges and universities by the Ministry of Education. The school was rated as the "Advanced Party Organization of Liaoning Province's Colleges and Universities" and became a cultivation and creation unit of the "Provincial Party Building Demonstration College".
