Dalian University for Nationalities is located in the beautiful coastal city of Dalian. It is affiliated to the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and is one of the more than 110 central government-affiliated universities in the country. It is the only national university located in the northeast and coastal open areas, with engineering as the main discipline and coordinated development of multiple disciplines. The school's construction goal is to become a high-level modern comprehensive university. The school currently has two campuses in the Development Zone and Jinshitan, covering an area of ​​more than 1,600 acres. The school was established in 1984 and enrolled students in 1993. It is a university jointly built by the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, the Ministry of Education, the Liaoning Provincial Government, and the Dalian Municipal Government.

The school's five majors, including industrial design, bioengineering, product design, network engineering, and electronic information engineering, have been approved as national first-class undergraduate major construction sites. International economics and trade, journalism, mechanical design and manufacturing and automation, computer science and technology, civil engineering, environmental engineering, administrative management, Japanese, information and computing science, communication engineering, optoelectronic information science and engineering, automation, architecture, and accounting have been approved as first-class undergraduate major construction sites in Liaoning Province. 8 national characteristic major construction sites have been built, 4 majors ranked first in Liaoning Province, 6 majors ranked second, 14 majors ranked in the top 20% of the province, and 80% of the majors ranked in the top 50%. Seven courses of the school have been approved as national first-class undergraduate courses, 2 courses have been selected as the ideological and political demonstration courses of the Ministry of Education, and 62 courses have been approved as provincial first-class undergraduate courses. It has been approved to establish two provincial industrial colleges, the E-commerce College and the Intelligent Manufacturing Modern Industry College. The school has two first-level master's degree programs in bioengineering and ethnology, and 6 master's degree authorization points in electronic information, international business, materials and chemical engineering, biology and medicine, forestry, and art. It has 12 provincial and ministerial key disciplines, 9 provincial and ministerial key laboratories such as the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Biotechnology and Resource Utilization, 2 provincial and ministerial engineering (technology) research centers, 1 provincial and ministerial professional and technical innovation center, and 1 provincial and ministerial industrial technology research institute. It has 7 provincial and ministerial key humanities and social science research bases, 2 provincial and ministerial research centers, and 2 provincial and ministerial think tanks. The school was approved to establish the National Innovation Alliance for Xanthoceras sorbifolia Industry, and won 2 second prizes in the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 2 second prizes in national teaching achievements, 1 third prize in the National Education Science Research Outstanding Achievement Award, 1 third prize in the Ministry of Education Higher Education Scientific Research Outstanding Achievement Award, 10 first prizes and 22 second prizes in Liaoning Province Teaching Achievement Award. In 2006, the school was rated as one of the first batch of college English teaching reform demonstration schools in the country, and won excellence in the teaching work level evaluation of the Ministry of Education in 2007. In 2010, it was approved as a national pilot school for education system reform. The school's undergraduate innovative education, bilingual teaching, and internationalization of curriculum teaching have been widely recognized by the society. Since its establishment, the university has trained more than 50,000 graduates, and the employment rate has remained above 90% for 22 consecutive years.

The university has 20 teaching and research units, including the School of Economics and Management, the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, the School of Life Sciences, the School of Foreign Languages, the School of Computer Science and Engineering, the School of Design, the School of Civil Engineering, the School of Liberal Arts, the School of Science, the School of Preparatory Education, the School of International Business, the School of Information and Communication Engineering, the School of Environment and Resources, the School of Physics and Materials Engineering, the School of Architecture, the Institute of Chinese Community, the School of Marxism, the School of International Cultural Exchange, the School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education, and the Department of Physical Education Research. There are 58 undergraduate majors, covering eight major disciplines of engineering, science, economics, management, literature, law, art, and agriculture. The school recruits students from 31 provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities) and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and students from 56 ethnic groups gather on campus. The school currently has more than 1,200 faculty and staff, of which nearly 65% ​​of full-time teachers have doctoral degrees and nearly 95% have master's degrees or above. Among the teachers, there are more than 140 outstanding talents, including leading talents of the National High-level Talent Special Support Program, young top talents, young and middle-aged scientific and technological innovation leading talents of the Ministry of Science and Technology, experts with special allowances from the State Council, the "Hundred Talents Program" of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the "New Century Excellent Talents Program" of the Ministry of Education.

In 2009, 2014 and 2019, the school was awarded the honorary title of "National Model Collective for National Unity and Progress" by the State Council for three consecutive times. In 2010, the school was awarded by the Ministry of Education as one of the first 50 universities with typical experience in graduate employment in the country. In 2015, it was named "National Demonstration University for the Creation of National Unity and Progress", and in 2020 it was again approved as "National Demonstration Unit for National Unity and Progress". In recent years, the school has also won the honorary titles of Advanced Party Organization of Higher Education Institutions in Liaoning Province, Civilized Campus of Liaoning Province, Advanced Collective for Graduate Employment of Ordinary Higher Education Institutions in Liaoning Province, Typical School for Employment of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, Advanced Unit for Degree and Postgraduate Education in Liaoning Province, and Demonstration School for Entrepreneurship Education for College Students in Liaoning Province.
