Guangxi Normal University is located in Guilin, an international tourist destination and a national historical and cultural city. It is a university jointly built by the Ministry of Education of China and the People's Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, a university in the "Basic Capacity Construction Project for Colleges and Universities in Central and Western China", a "domestic first-class university" university that Guangxi focuses on building, and a national civilized campus. There are three campuses in Wangcheng, Yucai, and Yanshan, with a campus area of ​​more than 4,100 acres; there are more than 2,500 faculty and staff, nearly 27,000 full-time undergraduates, more than 7,000 master's students, more than 350 doctoral students, nearly 1,700 international students of various types, and more than 26,000 adult education students. The school has developed into the "leader" of teacher education in Guangxi, the "main force" of strengthening Guangxi with humanities, the "fresh force" of developing Guangxi with science and technology, and the "vanguard" of international education in Guangxi. At present, the school is making every effort to promote the construction of "double first-class" and comprehensive reform, and strive to achieve the goal of building a domestic first-class, internationally renowned, and high-level domestic university with distinctive characteristics of teacher education.

The school has a rich history and culture. The predecessor of the school, Guangxi Provincial Normal College, was founded in 1932. It was the beginning of higher normal education in Guangxi and one of the earliest higher normal schools in China. It has been renamed six times, relocated eight times, and adjusted four times. During the Anti-Japanese War, together with Southwest Normal College and Kunming Normal College, it became the three famous higher normal colleges in the rear area of ​​the Anti-Japanese War, and was known as the "Southwest Democratic Fortress". From 1943 to 1978, it was the only university in Guangxi that trained undergraduate teachers. In 1983, it was renamed Guangxi Normal University. Since its establishment, a large number of well-known figures and experts and scholars, including Yang Dongquan, Xue Muqiao, Chen Wangdao, Ouyang Yuqian, Lin Liru, Chen Hansheng, Xia Zhengnong, Zeng Zuozhong, Zhang Yunying, Xie Houfan, Chen Bokang, Lin Huanping, Zhong Wendian, and Wu Chundao, have gathered in the school. Adhering to the school motto of "Respecting teachers, respecting work and enjoying the group", they have taught and studied, promoted literature and encouraged education, and trained more than 400,000 teachers and other professional talents for the country, especially Guangxi. In 2012, Liu Yandong, then member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and State Councilor, visited the school and encouraged teachers and students to "build a first-class university with characteristics and high level".

The school has a high scientific and educational platform. There are 21 teaching colleges (departments), 82 full-time undergraduate majors, 8 first-level doctoral degree authorization points (Marxist theory, chemistry, Chinese language and literature, education, software engineering, sports, world history, physics), 1 professional doctoral degree (education), 3 postdoctoral research mobile stations, 30 first-level master's degree authorization points, and 18 master's professional degree authorization points. In the fourth round of national discipline evaluation, 6 disciplines (Marxist theory, education, Chinese language and literature, chemistry, software engineering, and fine arts) ranked among the top 40% in the country, among which Marxist theory was awarded B+. The school's five first-level disciplines, including Marxist theory, education, Chinese language and literature, chemistry, and software engineering, have been awarded Guangxi's first-class discipline construction projects, and physics has been awarded Guangxi's first-class discipline construction and cultivation projects. There are 35 key disciplines in Guangxi (universities), and two disciplines, chemistry and engineering, have entered the top 1% of the international ESI rankings. The disciplines and majors cover 10 major categories, and the disciplines, doctoral programs, master programs, and autonomous region-level liberal arts key disciplines of liberal arts are all among the top universities in Guangxi. It has a national talent training base for basic liberal arts disciplines (Chinese language and literature), a national college student cultural quality education base (joint), the third batch of national key Marxist colleges of the Central Propaganda Department, a national social sports instructor training base, a research base of the Sports Culture Development Center of the State General Administration of Sports, a national training base for key primary and secondary school teachers, a national key vocational education teacher training base, a language and writing application training base of the National Language Committee, a training and research base for college counselors of the Ministry of Education, a training and research center for the ideological and political work team of the Ministry of Education, a demonstration base for continuing education in higher education institutions of the Ministry of Education, a basic education curriculum research center of the Ministry of Education, and a national research and training base for the "Young Marxist Training Project" of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League. The school is the supporting unit of the Guilin main node of the CERNET South China Network, and is the main unit of Guangxi's implementation of the "Humanistic Strengthening Guangxi" construction project. In 2009, the People's Government of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region established the Guangxi Humanities and Social Sciences Development Research Center in the school.

The school has excellent teachers. The school has more than 2,000 full-time teachers, among whom nearly 400 are senior teachers, and senior titles account for 48.68% of the full-time teachers; more than 700 teachers have doctoral degrees, and the number of teachers with master's degrees or above accounts for 84.87% of the total. There are more than 1,300 master's supervisors and more than 200 doctoral supervisors. There are currently 9 autonomous region-level first-class undergraduate professional construction sites, 15 advantageous and characteristic majors, 11 autonomous region-level high-quality majors, 8 autonomous region online open courses, 51 autonomous region-level first-class courses, 27 quality courses, 4 autonomous region-level quality video open courses, 11 autonomous region-level characteristic majors and course integration projects, and 10 autonomous region teaching teams. The school has made remarkable achievements in innovation and entrepreneurship education. In the past seven national "Internet +" college student innovation and entrepreneurship competitions, it has won 1 gold, 8 silver and 17 bronze medals. In addition, the school has always adhered to the mission and responsibility of teacher education, established the development ideas of teacher education of "leading Guangxi, building brands, serving the foundation, and going overseas", and became the "cradle" of teacher education in Guangxi. It has formed a "full coverage" system covering all levels and types of teacher training, and constructed an "integrated" model of pre-service training and post-service training for teachers, which has made positive explorations to promote the development of basic education and vocational education in Guangxi.

The school's cultural industry is booming. Guangxi Normal University Press was established in November 1986. As one of the first batch of university presses in the country to pilot enterprise transformation, Guangxi Normal University Press Group was officially established on June 28, 2009. It is the first local university press group in China and the first publishing group in Guangxi. In recent years, it has successively acquired the Australian Visual Publishing Group and the British ACC Publishing Group, and has taken the lead in building a multinational publishing group with a mature and complete industrial chain. It now has more than 30 companies and branches located in Guilin, Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and other places, as well as the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, Croatia, Japan and other countries. In the comprehensive evaluation organized by industry organizations in recent years, its comprehensive strength has been ranked among the top ten Chinese university presses. More than 20 books have won national book awards such as the "Five One Project Award", "China Publishing Government Award", "China Excellent Publications Award", and "China Good Books", and nearly 10 books have been rated as "the most beautiful book in the world" and "the most beautiful book in China"; it has been rated as an advanced collective of textbook management in colleges and universities across the country, an advanced college publishing house, and has been rated as a good publishing house and an advanced publishing unit by the General Administration of Press and Publication; it has been selected as the second batch of national digital publishing transformation demonstration units and knowledge service model (comprehensive) pilot units, and has been selected as a "national cultural export key enterprise" three times. The school has extensive international exchanges. It has established cooperative and exchange relations with 355 universities and institutions in 32 countries and regions, and has 3 Confucius Institutes and 1 Confucius Classroom overseas. The school is a demonstration base for studying in China by the Ministry of Education, a Chinese language education base of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, and an international cultural exchange base for overseas Chinese in China. It is an international student receiving unit for the "Chinese Government Scholarship" of the Ministry of Education, the "Confucius Institute Scholarship" of the National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, and the "ASEAN Scholarship" of the Guangxi Government. In 2018, it passed the quality certification for studying in China by the Ministry of Education. The Wangcheng and Yucai campuses of the school were once the school sites of the Vietnamese school. More than 10 Vietnamese national leaders and more than 40 Vietnamese provincial and ministerial leaders have come out of here. It is currently the university in China that accepts and trains the most Vietnamese students, and it is also the only university in the country that has established a Confucius Institute in Vietnam. In 2018, the school established the Vietnam Research Institute to focus on building a think tank platform for Vietnam research.

The school has a good social reputation. The school party committee was rated as a "national advanced grassroots party organization". The school has won the titles of "National School Art Education Advanced Unit", "Ministry of Education Rule of Law Demonstration School", "National Language and Character Standardization Demonstration School", "Safe and Civilized Campus", "Green University", and "National Defense Education Characteristic School". The school received an excellent grade in the evaluation of undergraduate teaching work by the Ministry of Education in 2008, and was highly recognized by the evaluation expert group in the review and evaluation of undergraduate teaching work by the Ministry of Education in 2016. The school's Academic Affairs Office has been rated as "National Excellent Academic Affairs Office of General Colleges and Universities" for three consecutive times, and the school's Higher Education Research Office has been awarded the title of "National Excellent Higher Education Research Institution" for three consecutive times. In 2017, the school was rated as the second batch of national demonstration colleges and universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform. In 2019, the school was rated as a typical college with innovation and entrepreneurship experience in the country (top 50 for innovation and entrepreneurship), and the University Student Entrepreneurship Park passed the Ministry of Science and Technology's national mass innovation space storage and cultivation verification in 2020.
