Beibu Gulf University is a comprehensive full-time general college with engineering, science, and management as the main disciplines and coordinated development of multiple disciplines. The school is located in Qinzhou City, an important hub city of the Western Land-Sea New Corridor and a coastal city in the Beibu Gulf Economic Zone. The 3A-level scenic campus with Lingnan style, coastal scenery, and Southeast Asian style provides a good teaching, scientific research, learning and living environment for teachers, students and staff.

  1. History

The predecessor of the school was Qinzhou Normal School founded in 1973; in October 1977, the State Council announced the resumption of the college entrance examination, and in February 1978, the first batch of ordinary junior college students enrolled; in July 1982, the Guangxi Regional Government approved the establishment of Qinzhou Teachers' Continuing Education College, and in September, the first batch of full-time adult junior college continuing education classes were enrolled; in June 1985, the Guangxi Regional Government agreed to add the Qinzhou Branch of Guangxi Normal University; in June 1988, the Guangxi Regional Government approved the Qinzhou Teachers' Continuing Education College to be renamed Qinzhou Education College (Retain the Qinzhou Branch of Guangxi Normal University); In May 1991, the State Education Commission approved the establishment of Qinzhou Normal College (retain Qinzhou Regional Education College); In June 2004, Qinzhou National Normal School, founded in 1906, was merged into Qinzhou Normal College; In February 2006, the Ministry of Education approved the school to be upgraded to Qinzhou College; In March 2018, the State Council Academic Degrees Committee approved the school to become a master's degree authorization institution; In November 2018, the Ministry of Education approved the establishment of Beibu Gulf University on the basis of Qinzhou College. In September 2021, the school became a newly added doctoral degree awarding institution (PhD B) in Guangxi from 2021 to 2025.

  1. School Overview

The school covers an area of ​​2,070 acres, with a building area of ​​652,300 square meters, teaching and scientific research practice equipment of 486 million yuan, 1.8179 million paper books, and 851,000 electronic books. The school currently has 53 undergraduate majors and 10 master's degree authorization points, including 2 first-level master's degree authorization disciplines and 8 master's professional degree authorization points. The school currently has 21,766 full-time students, including 293 graduate students and 439 international students. There are 1,299 faculty members, including 1,113 teachers. Among the teachers, 272 have doctoral degrees (including 59 doctoral students), 459 have senior professional titles (including 132 senior titles), and there are a group of high-level talents such as Bagui Scholars, Young Bagui Scholars, Autonomous Region Special Experts, Guangxi Teaching Masters, Guangxi "Ten Hundred Thousand Talents" second-level candidates, and Guangxi Overseas Hundred Talents Program candidates.

The school has 19 teaching units, including the School of Oceanography, the School of Maritime Transport (crew training center), the School of Mechanical and Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (engineering training center), the School of Petroleum and Chemical Engineering, the School of Food Engineering, the School of Electronic and Information Engineering, the School of Civil Engineering, the School of Resources and Environment, the School of Science, the School of Economics and Management, the School of Humanities, the School of International Education and Foreign Languages, the School of Ceramics and Design, the School of Education, the East Michigan Joint Engineering College, the School of Marxism, the School of Physical Education, the School of Continuing Education, and the School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. There are more than 70 provincial and above teaching and research platforms, including provincial key laboratories (engineering technology research centers), provincial characteristic majors, innovative and entrepreneurial reform demonstration majors, experimental teaching demonstration centers, virtual simulation experimental teaching centers, etc.

In 2007, it was the first among Guangxi universities to open marine-related majors, filling the historical gap that Guangxi had oceans but Guangxi universities did not have marine majors; in 2011, it became the only undergraduate university in Guangxi that obtained the national senior seafarer and national first-level fishery crew training qualifications. The school has successively become the first batch of council universities of the National Alliance of Applied Technology Universities, a pilot university for the overall transformation and development of newly built undergraduate colleges in Guangxi, a university jointly built by the People's Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and the State Oceanic Administration, and an "applied undergraduate university" project unit of the national "13th Five-Year Plan". In August 2021, the Modern Industry College of Ship and Marine Engineering Equipment and the Modern Industry College of Beibu Gulf Ceramics built by the school were awarded the title of "Model Modern Industry College of Guangxi Ordinary Undergraduate Colleges".

IV. Discipline and professional characteristics

The school focuses on highlighting the marine characteristics of school-running, with the mission of serving the strategy of a strong marine country and a strong marine region. It now has a number of marine-related majors such as marine science, marine engineering, navigation technology, aquaculture, ship and marine engineering, port channel and coastal engineering, and has built a discipline and professional cluster with marine characteristics such as marine biology and technology, marine transportation and engineering. The school thoroughly implements the strategic deployment of the state and the autonomous region on building a "double first-class" university, and solidly promotes the construction of "first-class disciplines", "key disciplines", "first-class majors" and "characteristic majors". Strengthen the construction of seven provincial key disciplines, including marine biology, aquaculture, shipbuilding and marine engineering, chemical technology, machinery manufacturing and automation, oil and gas storage and transportation engineering, and management science and engineering. More than 70% of the provincial key disciplines have obtained master's degree programs, and are actively preparing to build and apply for new first-class disciplines in the autonomous region. Relevant disciplines are closely connected with the regional industrial chain and value chain, and a three-level discipline system of "first-class disciplines in the autonomous region-provincial key disciplines-school-level key disciplines" has been constructed, actively creating a discipline system that serves the development of Guangxi's "sea-oriented economy".

There are 2 national first-class undergraduate professional construction sites (mechanical engineering, mathematics and applied mathematics), 1 comprehensive reform pilot major of the Ministry of Education (marine engineering), 11 provincial first-class undergraduate professional construction sites (navigation technology, ship and ocean engineering, food science and engineering, aquaculture, logistics management, product design, primary education, chemical engineering and technology, Chinese language and literature, computer science and technology, geographic information science); there are 14 provincial characteristic majors (groups) (mechanical and ship and ocean engineering professional group, petrochemical professional group, economic management professional group, marine science, aquaculture, navigation technology, marine engineering, food science and engineering, ship and ocean engineering, product design, chemical engineering and technology, logistics management, oil and gas storage and transportation engineering, geographic information science); there are 17 autonomous region-level first-class undergraduate courses. In October 2021, the Ministry of Education approved our school's primary education major to pass the second-level professional certification of normal education, and the certification of majors such as mathematics and applied mathematics and mechanical engineering is being actively promoted.

There are a number of provincial marine discipline development platforms, including "Guangxi Beibu Gulf Marine Biodiversity Conservation Key Laboratory", "Guangxi Beibu Gulf Marine Disaster Research Key Laboratory", "Guangxi Ship Digital Design and Advanced Manufacturing Engineering Technology Research Center", "Beibu Gulf Marine Development Research Center", "Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Chemical New Materials and Safety Technology Engineering Research Center" and "Guangxi Green Chemical New Materials and Safety Technology Key Laboratory". Give full play to the role of the team and platform, the school has continuously produced new results in the research of marine species conservation such as white dolphins, Chinese horseshoe crabs, and oysters, island resource protection and utilization, marine history and culture, and the transformation of scientific and technological achievements has made new progress.

V. International Cooperation and Exchange

The school has always adhered to the concept of open school-running, actively promoted the process of internationalization of school-running, and continuously improved its international competitiveness. It has established exchange and cooperation relations with more than 50 universities and scientific research institutions in more than 20 countries and regions such as Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Poland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It recruits international students from more than 40 countries and regions in Asia, Africa, Oceania, etc. In recent years, more than 200 domestic students have gone abroad for further study and employment, and have trained more than 1,000 foreign students to come to China. In 2016, the cooperative education project between the school and the Warsaw University of Technology in Poland was approved by the Ministry of Education. In 2021, the "Beibu Gulf University-Eastern Michigan Joint Engineering College" was approved by the Ministry of Education to be established, filling the gap in the field of Sino-foreign cooperative education institutions at the undergraduate level in Guangxi higher education. At present, there are 6 majors taught in English, more than 200 courses taught in English, more than 120 bilingual courses, and 12 general courses in international literacy. There are more than 200 teachers who can conduct all-English and bilingual teaching, and more than 500 people have participated in international academic conferences and international cultural exchanges. Through the attempt to promote the reform of all-English education for international students, the construction of local internationalized courses has been strengthened, and the reform of the internationalized talent training model of "in-class and out-of-class integration" has begun to show results, effectively promoting the internationalization of the construction of the teaching staff and improving the international literacy of domestic students. In recent years, the school has innovated cooperation models, broadened cooperation channels, seized opportunities, and expanded resources.
