Guizhou University was founded in 1902. It has gone through the periods of Guizhou University Hall, Provincial Guizhou University, National Guizhou Agricultural and Industrial College, and National Guizhou University. In October 1950, it was named Guizhou University. In November 1951, Chairman Mao Zedong personally wrote the name of "Guizhou University". In August 1997, it merged with Guizhou Agricultural College and other colleges. In August 2004, it merged with Guizhou University of Technology. In December 2004, it became a university jointly established by the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Guizhou Province. In September 2005, it became a national "211 Project" university. In September 2012, it became a selected university in the national "Central and Western Colleges Comprehensive Strength Improvement Project". In April 2016, it became a national key university in the "one province, one school" in the central and western regions. In September 2017, it became a national world-class discipline construction university. In November 2017, it won the first "National Civilized Campus". In February 2018, it became a "Ministry-Provincial Joint Construction" university of the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Guizhou Province. In January 2019, it was selected as a pilot unit for the comprehensive reform of the "Three-dimensional Education" of the Ministry of Education. In January 2021, it was approved as the first batch of "National Party Building Demonstration Universities".
