Guizhou Medical University was formerly known as the "National Guiyang Medical College" established in 1938. It was one of the first nine higher medical colleges directly under the Ministry of Education in China at that time. The first dean was Professor Li Zongen, an early Chinese tropical disease expert and medical educator from Peking Union Medical College. Under his leadership, a large number of well-known domestic experts and scholars with superb academic attainments, such as Yang Chongrui, Zhu Zhanggeng, Tang Peisong, Jia Kui, Yang Jishi, Liu Weide, Hong Qian, Lin Shaowen, Hou Baozhang, Zhang Xiaoqian, Guo Bingkuan, Wang Jiwu, Zhu Maogen, Li Ruilin, Li Yi, and Wang Zhijun, gathered at the National Guiyang Medical College, making it known as the "Little Union" at that time, and pioneered Guizhou's higher education.

In 1950, the "National Guiyang Medical College" was renamed "Guiyang Medical College" and was placed under the management of the Guizhou Provincial People's Government. In 1965, the "Guiyang Medical College Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine" was separated to form the "Guiyang College of Traditional Chinese Medicine"; in 1981, it became the first batch of master's degree-granting institutions in the country; in 2003, it became a doctoral degree-granting institution; in April 2015, it was renamed "Guizhou Medical University".

The school covers an area of ​​1,868 acres, with 4 directly affiliated hospitals, 8 non-directly affiliated hospitals, 9 teaching hospitals, and 132 non-clinical professional practice teaching bases. It has multiple scientific research platforms and innovation teams, including 9 national platforms such as the provincial and ministerial co-construction of the National Key Laboratory, and 44 provincial and ministerial platforms.

The school has 20 teaching units and 44 undergraduate majors. There are 4 doctoral degree authorization points, including 3 first-level doctoral degree authorization points (basic medicine, public health and preventive medicine, and pharmacy), and 1 professional degree category doctoral degree authorization point (clinical medicine). There are 18 master's degree authorization points, including 10 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points and 8 professional degree master's degree authorization points. There is 1 first-class discipline group I in Guizhou Province, 4 first-class disciplines in Guizhou Province, 4 first-level disciplines of Guizhou Province's characteristic key disciplines, and 2 first-level disciplines of Guizhou Province's key disciplines; 4 national clinical key specialty construction projects and 2 postdoctoral research mobile stations. Clinical medicine, pharmacology and toxicology are among the top 1% of ESI in the world. There are 7 national first-class professional construction points and 16 provincial first-class professional construction points. In 2019, with the support of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, the "Union Class" was opened as a clinical medicine education reform and innovation class, and the first clinical medicine elite class was held in Guizhou Province.

The school currently has more than 25,689 full-time students (including more than 3,123 graduate students and more than 180 international students), and the school has trained more than 75,000 full-time graduates for the society (including more than 8,500 graduate students). The school has more than 2,000 employees, 718 of whom have doctoral degrees, and 1,149 teachers with senior professional and technical positions. There are 2 "Yangtze River Scholars Award Program", 3 experts in the "National Candidates of the Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talents Project", 4 selected candidates for the Ministry of Education's "New Century Excellent Talents Support Program", 8 members of the Ministry of Education's Professional Teaching Guidance Committee, 1 China Youth Science and Technology Award, 3 national "May 1st" Labor Medal winners, 2 national model teachers, 3 national outstanding teachers, 1 national advanced worker in the education system, 1 ten-level talent in Guizhou Province's "Ten, Hundred, Thousand Talents Program", 8 hundred-level talents, 5 hundred-leading talents in Guizhou Province's "Hundred, Thousand Talents Introduction Program", and 6 thousand-innovation and entrepreneurship talents. There are 14 experts with special allowances from the State Council, 6 young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions to the National Health and Family Planning Commission, 10 core experts in Guizhou Province, and 24 provincial experts in Guizhou Province.

From 2016 to 2021, the university won 32 national and provincial scientific research awards, including 1 second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 Guizhou Province Highest Science and Technology Award, 6 first prizes of the Provincial Science and Technology Award, and 1 first prize of the Provincial Philosophy and Social Science Outstanding Achievement Award. It undertook 2,626 vertical scientific research projects of various levels and types, including 452 projects approved by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. The number of approved projects has increased year by year, from 48 in 2016 to 98 in 2021. It has obvious characteristics in the fields of endemic disease research, research and development of traditional Chinese medicine and ethnic medicine, tissue engineering stem cell biomedicine research, pathogenic biology research, and transformation of scientific research results.

The school gives full play to its advantages in teaching, research, and medicine, and always takes serving the local economic and social development as its mission. It has established the largest medical service system in the province, playing an important role in emergency medical rescue, treatment of difficult and critically ill patients, drug clinical trials, and improvement of public health literacy, and has made positive contributions to the development of local medical and health undertakings.
